First, I am not a composer. I can improvise within a raag and bandish, but I don't compose songs. So please read my answer with that in mind. If the lyrics are portraying a particular mood, you will use a raag based on that mood. To do that however, you will need to first learn many raags before you can decide on which raag to base your lyrics on. Does this make sense?

My mom used to teach me Classic Music, but suddenly I stopped singing and now it feels bad for not singing inspite of having melodious voice because of inferiority complex, now I'm at my clg far away from her and she can't get time to teach me again, Thank You ma'am, you've made me feel confident once again...
