    My native language is Bosnian and I have a couple of polish friends that I play with, and the languages are so similar in both words and grammar. I can understand about 40% of what they say in polish and tought it could be an easy third language to learn. Also a slavic language being my native one the pronunciations are natural and take no effort and it amazes me how much you have to simplify it for everyone else and I find it simpler to translate the English sentences into Bosnian and than into Polish.

    The word order and many basic vocabulary are almost the same as in Russian. This is the first time ever for me to learn Polish. With a basic understanding of Russian this is really easy to follow. No wonder slavic languages are so closely related that it's so easy for the speakers to learn other slavic languages interchangeably. I started with Ukranian several days ago, so there were no problems following it.

    Hello Monika. I really love your lessons. Just a question at the 5:38 mark. Is there a mistake with It is there and What is there? The order is different. Also, There is a house and Is there a house? Should both be tam jest dom? Just trying to figure out why the order is different. Thank you:)

  • @PolishwithMonika

    @PolishwithMonika

    9 ай бұрын

    Hello. The word order in Polish is quite flexible so there are often many possibilities in which order you put the words. Although there might be more preferred or neutral ways. Words at the beginning and at the end of the sentence are often the ones we want to emphasize. But very often it is how we raise the intonation tells what we want to emphasize. What is there? Co tam jest? (sounds for me the most neutral) Co jest tam? (also possible, less frequent) There is a house. Tam jest dom. (most neutral "There is a house") Dom jest tam. (this would mean more "The house is there" or "A house is there") Dom tam jest. (here we emphasize more the "dom" like "A HOUSE is there.") Is there a house? Jest tam dom? (question when we want to know if a house exists there) Tam jest dom? (here we underline more the place "Is THERE is a house?") Dom jest tam? (A house is there?) Dom tam jest? (A house is there?)

    These lessons are fantastic, thank you so much! Quick question about "Who is this?" and "Who is there?" at 12:20 - You say "Who is this?" can be either "Kto to jest" or just "Kto to", but "Who's there?" can just be "Kto tam". Would the sentence "Kto tam jest?" not make sense? If not, why doesn't that work?

  • @PolishwithMonika

    @PolishwithMonika

    11 ай бұрын

    "Kto tam?" and "Kto tam jest?" are both ok. "Kto tam?" is the short version and would be used for example when someone is knocking at the door. "Kto tam jest?" is the full version and would be used when asking a person to find out who is present in another place.

  • @PolishwithMonika

    @PolishwithMonika

    7 ай бұрын

    In Polish, the word order is quite flexible (but not random), also in questions. The order however might emphasize specific words, or simply is more common in use. Jest tam sklep? - Is there a store? Is a store over there? (Sounds neutral. We are asking if a store exists somewhere.) Tam jest sklep? - There is a store? (Here we put some emphasize on the place "tam". ) Also, apart from the word order, the way we put stress on the words will signalize our intentions.
