G'day!
So, pretty much every great riff (that I can think of at least) can be analysed through the lens of 'this part is derived from this scale, this part from that scale'... and when it's not a scale per-se, then it's a chord (or chords) and at that point, well all chords are built from scales so yeah, the more you know and learn you scales, the broader the palette you can create from.
I made up this 'riff' from the C#m scale.
