Lesson 11, Compound Cut On The Scroll Saw

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show an easy compound cut. A compound cut is done by cutting from two different directions. The pattern needed a 1" by 1" by 4" block of wood so I laminated 1/4" strips of walnut together with wood glue and dressed it up with my hand plane and a sander. Different woods could be mixed both horizonal or vertical to get different effects, or you can cut the proper sized block out of wood of at least 1" thickness on a table saw for a solid block. I used walnut because it is what I have on hand. I have found that a harder wood cuts cleaner with a shiny smooth surface. My best results have been with rosewood. On a compound cut I prefer to use a #3 or #5 skip tooth blade non reverse tooth. The reverse teeth are not needed to keep the bottom of the finished piece smooth and they make it difficult to hold the work piece down against the surface as the blade strokes upward. After cutting the first side you then must secure all the pieces with tape or Steve Good has a jig for doing so (link below). You then flip the piece and make the second cuts and then remove all the pieces to expose the finished piece.

In some videos I speed it up to keep them from being so long but prefer real time when I can. Thanks for watching

Just starting to add scroll saw to other woodwork skills, something to do while CNC is carving away! Like your video & tutor style, you got a new subscriber. That should look great oiled & shellac. Just had crazy thought, saw sharp tip ... You could make great looking spinning tops this style.

Pegas Super Skip (no reverse teeth) are good for compound cuts. I never leave the inner scraps made on the first side. The blade doesn't have to work as hard on the second side. Also Steve Good has a plan for a clamping jig that makes control of the cut so much easier.

Good pointers, thanks. I often leave the inner scraps from the first side out also. I made Steve's jig once and it works great.

The cutting was set in real time? I have tried all kinds of blades but the cutting is really slow, I was using Basswood and now working on some Poplar,

Yes the cutting was in real time. I actually ended up using three different blades, two of them reverse tooth. I finally found a non reverse tooth to finish with that worked better, it was a number 3 skip tooth. The wood is Walnut which is not a super hard wood although harder than Basswood or Poplar. According to the Janka hardness scale the relative hardness of each is Walnut 1010, Basswood 410 and Poplar 540. Those are all fairly soft woods with harder woods running 1300 and upward to 3000 or more. You should be able to cut the Basswood and Poplar as easily as I did with the Walnut. A skip tooth blade should cut better than a standard in thicker cuts 1 inch and up. I am assuming you have tried that as you said that you tried all kinds of blades but if you haven't tried skip tooth that may help. I used a 7 and a 5 and a 3. The 3 cut best as it was not reverse tooth but a 5 should work great.
