so the short answer is: 1. comet: big rock with ice, shiny, have tail, elliptical orbit, doesnt land on earth (yet?). 2. asteroid: big rock without ice, not shiny, and land on earth. 3. meteoroid: small ball without ice, not shiny, not hit earth. 4. meteor: small ball without ice, not shiny, trying to land on earth but failed because get burned on atmosphere and turned into flash. 5. meteorite: small ball without ice, not shiny, succesfully land on earth. (an asteroid but small) is this right?

an average meteor can be held in your hand. Only very very big ones can cause major damage that can cause extinction. And that is very rare because something will have to disrupt its orbit which will be really hard to do since its so big and heavy.

Comets are basically dirty chunks of mainly iron soaring about space basically they are just dirty asteroids. They have a variety of materials on them such as ice and various surface meterials. If and when a comet gets close enough to our sun, the sun will illumiate the residue which cause us to see what seem to be a tail following the comet. Asteroids are basically just chunks of iron soaring around the universe some of which use to be comets but have long since been stripped of their surface materials and when close to the sun show no signs of a tail. Some asteroids still show remenets of tails but they are only visable on really really clear nights using a 12 in scope with a high power lens. If and when a comet should it ever and or an asteroids which happens all the time, come into our Earths atmospher, it is referred to as a Meteor, if and when such meteor actually reaches the Earth surface, it is referred to as an metorite. In a sense they are all the same thing, but referred to different depending on their status. In the area of space referred to as the ORT CLOUD, there are gazillions of asteroids both clean and dirty. On ocassion they will bump into one another and a new trajectory will take place. Sometime though it can take millenials, the trajectory will take them to near Earth orbits. Most are never ever seen and because of the Suns gravitional pull eventually end up going into the Sun. The recent closeing of the SSO is though to be from a leaked photo showing what appears to be by UFO nuts a group of UFO's somewhere in space between the SUN and us. I suspect it's noting but a small group of asteroids which are heading into the Sun gravitional pull. Because if one does the math, the smallest of all the images is nearly 3 times the size of the planet Mercury. The largest is just over six times larger. If they are alien craft so be it. If they want Earth, for what ever reason, so be it, there's nothing anyone or government is gonna do to stop a ship three times the size of our smallest planet, let alone all of its companions the largest being more than six times larger. Hope this answered anyone question, keep looking up.

Haha, good question! There are several meteors, asteroids, etc. that are very large, obviously these can (and have done) tremendous damage! However, even small debris hurtling through space picks up a lot of speed and energy, allowing even tiny pieces to pack a punch!

Very good video for school-kids. Recent close-up images of both asteroids and comets now show very little difference between the two (other than where they originated in the solar system), so you were "spot-on" where you said that "asteroids are like comets, but without water". Keeping with this theme of "similarity", you then showed that the relationship among them is mostly a matter of comparative size, or where they originated, or where they reside in the solar system. For instance: Comets orginate from the outer solar system; Asteroids originate mostly from the asteroid belt; Meteoroids are just smaller versions of the above, and would include similiar sized debris from impacts on the Moon or Mars orbiting in interplanetary space (around the Sun); Meteors are mostly the burning-up of particles from the dusty trails of comets, and very rarely from asteroid debris, and even more rarely from debris by impacts on the Moon or rocky planets. Meteoroids larger than a pebble would make a meteor so bright that they give it a special name, "fireball". Meteors that don't completely burn up and survive intact after landing on the surface of a planet are called "meteorites". This is a definition agreed upon by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Having said that, I need to point out that meteorites DON'T "travel at very high speeds". This mistake is not your fault. Why? Because you have fallen into a trap, actually a hole left in the definition of the word "meteor" by many astronomers who didn't carefully read the IAU definition for "meteoroid". Check out the photos from NASA up and close to comets and asteroids. They look almost identical on the surface. No ice on comets. The only difference is comets have an elliptical orbit
