As an American I had no idea until recently that Lesley was on Eurovision. I actually discovered her music & bought her debut album, “Unbeautiful” back in 2008 so I’ve been a fan for awhile. It’s funny, back then I was working through a particularly deep depression & drinking a lot to numb the pain. I’d gone through years of “gay conversion therapy” (against my wishes) & had my mind f-ked with by an “ex-gay” psychiatrist whom I looked to as a father figure because I was so desperate for parental love. I was struggling with addiction because he over-prescribed me uppers, downers, you name it I took it from age 15 & up. I was also recovering from spending years at an abusive & homophobic religious school & healing from an emotionally abusive relationship with a narcissistic young man who saw me as an easy, attractive target for his cruelty. I’d listen to Lesley’s music for hours alone in my room. Sometimes I’d drive around my neighborhood (when I was allowed to leave the house) with her album playing on repeat just to breathe for a minute & escape reality. Of course, I had no idea back then that Lesley herself was gay just like me! 🤷🏼‍♂️ Ha. In my 30’s now & like Lesley says “my life is mine” now. My parents finally accepted me after a decade of struggle. My mom even walked me down the aisle of the church I was married in. I met a wonderful man, married him & we’ve been together for 15 years now. I love him more everyday & he loves and respects me. Life isn’t perfect & I’m still in therapy trying to cope with the years of abuse, over medication, neglect & trauma I endured. But I’m still here. They told me I’d never be happy. They said I’d “die of AIDS”. They told me I was a pathetic, worthless waste of space. They said I’d know only pain & literal hell. But I’m still here. I found love & commitment. I refuse to go away or give up. *“My life is mine.”*

I'm so proud of our entry. Ireland has it's very own pop-rock queen. It's so catchy and feel good. It makes you want to get up and dance around like a mad thing and you feel sad when it's over so you play it on repeat. Most importantly I love its uplifting message. I miss music like this so much.
