Leshy: The Slavic Lord of the Forest | Monstrum

↓ More info below ↓
He can grow higher than the trees, or smaller than a blade of grass. Both demon and deity, guardian and antagonist, the Leshy is rooted deep in the cultural and religious history of the Slavic people.
Said to be the lord of the forest, the Leshy could lead people and animals astray, causes accidents, and even drive people to madness and death. But they could also be surprisingly helpful...if you asked nicely. In this episode, you’ll learn about the surprising history of this shapeshifting creature, and how to avoid becoming his victim. #leshy #slavicfolklore #witcher #MonstrumPBS
We are incredibly grateful to Katherine Arden for her insight into the Russian language and Slavic folklore.

I can just picture them trading parts of the forest and the animals in them. Imagine if cryptids that lived in their forests were like rare trading cards. "I'll give you 10 bears for your bigfoot." "Nah! You'll have to give me your mothman! Then you get the bigfoot!"

Fascinating that the Slavs believed in not whistling while in the forest in order to show the leshy respect. Some Native American tribes had the exact same idea in regards to the Dogman spirit which dwelled in the forests and towards nature in general.

A year later, I know, but. But. From childhood, I was taught a lot of similar superstitions. Connected to the forest: never make too much noise, never step on sticks step over them, if you are tired sit on a stump not a log, never go through three close-growing trees (like a triangle). There are more but my memory is a bit rusty.

Interestingly, I've always wondered if there was a physical connection. A lot of the things that the Leshy does/can do remind me of stories about Sasquatch in America specifically. Wouldn't that be wild if the Leshy was the Slavic Bigfoot equivalent? 😄 Specifically border disputes, falling boulders, mimicry, and shapechanging come to mind, but there was one story I remember that said that the Leshy was able to change size from 'the tallest tree in the forest to the shortest blade of grass in the field' and to me nowadays, that really makes me think of Sasquatch. *shrug*

My great grandmother told me stories about Lesnik (serbo-croatian for Leshy) when I was just a little girl. She said he is a good spirit who protects forest and if anyone hurts an animal or cuts a very old tree, he is gonna make this person lose its way and wander the forest forever until they die. I love this series, not just because it is filled with the origin stories of unheard and bizarre monsterous beings that doesn't have an enormous place in popular culture -unlike vampires or werewolfes though a detailed research of werewolfes shows that they are more than just attractive people with ripped off jeans and hot abbs- but it also teaches about the cultural structures of people and communities those entities first started to appear. I feel inspired and facinated by the tales and origins of these creatures and the your comments abouth the symbolism of their powers and abilities even more. This episode is a favourite of mine since I love forest spirits and creatures . Thanks for another great lesson about the mysteries of the Slavic folklore.

My grandma would always tell me about different creatures from our folklore (I'm from Poland) and apparently when the Christianity entered the country, churches would burn our books with Slavic Mythology since being a Pogan was viewed as something outdated and people would get in trouble for their believes. It's a shame, but now that the Poles are becoming less influenced by the Church, more and more people are looking back into our beautiful Slavic culture, trying to restore what's left of it.

Watching these videos and experiencing things like this; makes you understand why legends like this get started and stay alive through the centuries. Am I saying I encountered a Leshy? I grew up with Slavic culture and as far as I see it was very accurate 😊 Actually, the Leshy is just one of many spirits in Slavic folklore, like the Domovoi (house spirit) or the Vodyanoi (water spirit) But an interesting sidenote. Finno-Ugric peoples also have similar spirits and specially the Udmurts have stories about conflicts between the forest spirits (Nyulesmurt) and the water spirits (Vumurt)

Alas, my level of English is bad and I understand almost nothing, but it’s obvious that the video is very cool, if there is such an opportunity I would like to add subtitles in Russian, I think there are a lot of viewers in the Russian-speaking segment of KZread who will like this content, I will be grateful if you pay attention to my a comment

Oh yeah I've been waiting for a Leshen video! Never heard of them before until I ran into one in the Witcher 3 when I was a very low level. It was walking away from me while watching me over it's shoulder. While looking at me, it walked behind a tree, disappeared, re-appeared behind me and killed me instantly! ALL of my hair stood up, and since that day Leshen have been my favourite monster myth.

He sounds like Cernnunos, or the Green man, or a combination of both. Even the forest spirit from "Princess Mononoke" seems to share his traits. Not a fan of the "Christianity trumps traditional belief" side to things but the animistic view of forests and their inhabitants is always appealing.

Hi, awesome work on the video. Love it. I live in Western Ukraine near Carpathian mountains which is almost untouched by civilisation, so we go for hiking there quite often and I can tell that I dont know anyone who beliews in Leshy (or more likely known here as a "lisoviy" meaning the one from the forest) as a being, but there is a tradition shared around of respecting the forest and nature itself. You are not supposed to scream or curse, no loud music and no littering, so perhaps the idea stayed without imbodiment of some wood spirit.

I love that every Russian is still familiar with slavic folklore, thanks to Russian writers and Soviet cinema. I grew up in a Russian village and recall references to the Domovoi, Leshyi, Chort/Bess, and Chur (a Komi and slavic deity). Yes, we had superstitions, like if you drop a fork or spoon a woman will visit. If you drop a knife, a man will visit. This was just done in fun. Also, dont whistle or open umbrellas indoors. This just added mysticism and fun to my childhood. My village was called Seredka, in the Tver region. This was once an industrial base, so the village settlers were not generational villagers, just like my family. We didnt sing slavic songs at senokos, or haymaking. But we did have a club house, where we put on performances. One time at New Years, we came to dress the tree, and my neighbor dressed as Snegurachka. She had on a blue dress and a white sparkling headdress called kakoshnik. It was the most beautiful thing Ive ever seen. It was these things, and the warm way that adults consistently treated me wherever I went, even in the city, that made me fall in love with my culture and country when I was there. But when I moved to the United States, it only increased my love.

Hypothesis: The reason for the old Slavic myths being poorly preserved is likely due to them having an oral tradition and the Christianization of the Slavic people. But even then there are other parts of Europe that managed to preserve the knowledge of the old myths and it's unlikely that the Slavic people didn't eventually write things down (which would happen as a result of needing to copy down the Bible and produce more of it). However, the final nail in the coffin is undoubtedly Communism. Due to the doctrines of Communism requiring the annihilation of religion and anyone who practices it, it's unlikely that whatever text written down about the old traditions that survived Christianity or created during that time frame would be lost forever due to the extremely censorious nature of the Soviets. However, it's more likely that the information was lost after the region and its people became Christianized.
