At this point in his life, Les Paul had arthritis in both his hands so bad that only three fingers in each hand where even functional and those that where functional where severely compromised. He had to re-teach himself how to play the guitar with this handicap. Still, this is one of the best renditions of sleepwalk on guitar. In his younger days Les Paul was one of the greatest guitar players out there and he created many new styles some of which went on to be rock and roll. I showed my son a video of him playing "How High the Moon" which came out in 1951. The video was made in 1953 from a TV show he made laying down the final track of it in a demonstration of the technique of over dubbing (which he invented) and my son immediately said "That's Rock & Roll". No I said the history books say that the first Rock & Roll song was "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets from 1955 while others say it was "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats in 1951. Here it is. I'm not showing this to demonstrate his virtuosity but rather his inventiveness. Remember this was 1951. There are better examples of his virtuosity. Les Paul was known as a Jazz player but whatever you want to call this it wasn't Jazz. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJ97yJOAeKTemKg.html

@@alexlogan124 I met a kid working in Sam Ash 18 years ago I was buying guitar strings. The kid told me he was at an event featuring Les Paul. Slash and other great guitarist were there and he told me not one of them could keep up with Les that night Arthritis & All. When I took guitar lessons BTN 1978-1983 I had a snark Jazz musician for a teacher and he shunned Rock music, so I asked him who dose the Jazz world regard as a great rock guitar player he looked at me and said Jimi Hendrix, I nodded in agreement. 1986 I was in my friends car WNEW FM was playing a Jimi Hendrix special it was all jazz ruff cuts that were never released, and I never heard this music again and I was Listening to this thinking I could be home tapping this, and I thought about what my guitar teacher said about Hendrix & Jazz music. What Hendrix played in the studio and on stage who can tell. The Gibson SG had Les Paul's stamp on it Mick Taylor had one its on the cover of Get Your Ya's Ya's Out in 1969, and the Gibson Flying V might have had a Les Paul stamp on it as well -- Who Knows. I saw interview by an editor of a guitar magazine years ago in which he and Les talked about some of the double bends that Les used. The technique was simply that Les would bend a note and hold until the note had almost disappeared and then Les would re-bend the note without using his picking hand, this gave an almost silent but noticable second emphasis on the note. Les said it was a method he'd developed to add a bit of "extra" to the songs without having a whole loud note popping out of the speakers. This particular song showcased that re-bend technique a number of times. Chris, I really enjoyed this one and greatly appreciate the effort you take to post these excerpts from the performances. I'm curious as to what his rythm guitarist and bassist have been up to since Les passed away. With "played with Les Paul" on their resumes, I have to imagine they're playing with anyone they choose to...
