Les Paul Out of Phase Wiring (50's Wiring)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this #sixstringsupplies video we cover Les Paul out of phase wiring - how to add a reverse phase switch using a push pull pot.
This is a really easy mod to do yourself and gives a unique, hollow sounding tone when the pickups are out of phase.
It was a very common mod during the 70s and 80s and players such as Brian May & Jimmy Page put it to good use.
Peter Green is well known for his out of phase tones. However, this was actually achieved by manually flipping the magnet in his neck pickup.
We'll be doing the wiring mod with a push pull pot and a soldering iron!
Out of phase, simply put, means that the polarity of one of the pickups is flipped.
Components:
3 x CTS 500k pots
1 x CTS 500k push pull pot

I did a phase switch, series/parallel, and coil split on a VVT with 3 dpdt pots...NOT FUN. but the options were fun to dink with...not as much as I thought, but I woke up with a case of the F arounds.

Series to Parallel switching on the neck specifically... I'd just leave the neck in parallel and get a really hot alnico one like a SF full shred

As I understand it, the taped red and white wires can normally be wired either side of a mini toggle switch to give a coil split option. Would that work - and add an additional split option, with the phase switch in there and would it be possible to use push/pull pots on the volume pots (in addition to the one you use for the phase switching) instead of mini toggle switches to avoid drilling holes and trying to fit more stuff in the back cavity?

I hope it is no imposition but can you please let me know in a reply post the name and where you got the wire bending fork tool that is so cool for solid wire and works perfectly. I looked all over for it but no such luck Thanks Mate Very Informative no brain er on the the CTS Switch / Pot

I wired one pickup on my guitar out of phase, but with no switch, so watching tutorials with the out of phase switch gets a little confusing for me. I think I got what i wanted to know from the video, but I'd just like to ask for certainty: If I have one pickup wired out of phase, the wiring/grounding changes to do the 50s wiring mod are still the same as if they were in phase, correct? So, the fact that I have reversed the pickup wires on one pot has no bearing on what lugs I need to switch the capacitor to, right?

I was considering doing this with a .015 cap on the neck & .022 bridge (Clapton's woman tone). Would that work well with the out of place wiring?

Hi, can you please PLEASE give me some info on wiring. I have scoured the internet and watched a lot of your videos and cant find the answer. I have followed these steps exactly as you have shown but when it comes to the push/pull pot I am using Seymour Duncan triple shot pickup rings. So I do not have North start and South start, I only have Black(ground), Bare(ground) and White(hot) coming from the pickup ring. How do i wire the black, bare and white wire to the push/pull to get phase switching? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if you dont mind, I dont have any braided wire to hand. Can you wire the 3-way selector using standard basic wire? Ive spent 3 days researching this and wiring up the guitar and I'm having earthing issues.

Hi! Very usefull video, great job! Works great. I have it done in my Les paul by my luthier. Just one hint - when I choose out of phase by push/pull switch and then touch the neck pickup cover with finger it starts to buzz - like grounding problem, when I stop out of phase there is no buzz when touching the pickup. I inspect the wiring and it seems to be ok - like on the video. Is it normal? What are your experience? Thanks!

Someone recommended putting copper tape inside where the pick-ups insert, and even on the back side of the pick guard and inside the pot holes. It prevents the buzzing (well, the guy says it does). I'll try to find the video link to show you.

What's weird is I just saw a interview with Kirk from Metallica & not only did he say that "Greenie's" out of phase sound does not go thin sounding like all these people are saying, but he showed that "Greenie's" out of phase sound is actually very thick sounding. Then he went on to show & prove this is the truth. The interview he did recently with Rick Beato is where he proves it to you.

Flipping the magnet is a little different, usually people with 2 conductor pickup leads will go for the magnet flip, esp. with valuable/collectible pickups or not wanting to do the delicate soldering to make it a 4 conductor. But y're right, with the magnet flip you can roll one volume back until you get closer to the normal middle position sounds. Swapping wires like here is officially called 180° out of phase, or half out. It sounds ever so slightly different. Still great, Zappa's Strats were wired to switch positions 2 & 4 out of phase, obvi no magnet flips on a Strat. Work the tone controls too, with an .015 cap in the neck tone circuit you get a cocked wah sound rolled all the way off, more so our of phase.

I am just unsure of how to do it because ive never coil split using s switch however on this specific model it seems easier to do it with a switch because of cavity limitations

Jimmy Page for the record never had any of these Push Pull mods until 1984. So not period correct for Led Zeppelin . He had some 'Phase Cancellation ' going on in the middle position due to the low Wind(7.5k) T Top Bridge Pickup combined with the High wind PAF (8.6k) in the neck . The Neck PUP is set BELOW pickup ring and then you get that "Hollow Chirp" sound in the middle. I demo his live 1973 tone on my channel for J Page tone chasers

Peter Greens guitar had no special wiring it was just the neck pickup with the magnet flipped. Turning a pickup around makes no difference to the guitars tone.

Thanks for posting this approach to ELECTRONICALLY out of phase wiring, a useful tonal variation. However the Greenie sound is caused by a MAGNETICALLY out of phase pickup achieved by physically reversing (flipping or rotating) the magnet in one of the humbuckers. It’s a totally different sound, so a bit of disinformation to say this is a Paul Green sound mod. I don’t doubt that a lot of 50’s Les Pauls were wired out of phase like this.
