Imo Ruthie Henshall by far the one who has sung this song the best.

I absolutely adore Ruthie Henshall's Fantine!

Everyone basically had to recreate everything Patti Lupone did in the original production. Shows become frozen and everyone following has to follow the character the originator created Patti created the Fantine we all know. It's very hard to build a character from scratch. Very easy to add your flourishes to something that has already been built for you. Patti deserves credit from all.

but why is nobody talking about caissie levy as fantine?? she leaves it ALL on the stage, she's so passionate and digs into the character, as well as having an extraordinary voice

Honestly, kind of perfect.

I *love* that "throbbing"quality in Randy Graff's voice. Rachel York is probably my other favorite (I saw her in the role in 1992).

My favourite is Celinde Schoenmaker I was lucky to see her 4 times and she was amazing the first time and simply phenomenal the fourth, SHEER PERFEC TION. I DONT LOOK DOWN ON ANY OF THE OTHERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FANTINE BECAUSE TO BELT OUT THIS LES MIS CLASSIC YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN AWESOME VOICE.

I love Ruthie Henshall.

Ruthie Henshall is the best, by a long way. She encompasses Fantine's soul and heartbreak, perfectly. Sierra Boggess was very good, though. I saw her play Fantine, in the West End and she was fucking amazing.

Debbie Byrne was Fantine in the Complete Symphonic Recording, it's a much better recording of her singing the song than what's here.

Of the all the Fantines listed, I've had the pleasure of seeing Joan Almedilla, Simone, and Charlotte Maltby. All three were breathtaking, but Simone and Charlotte were just so damn heartbreaking.

For my money Lea Salonga is the best one on here because of the sheer emotion she brings to it. She doesn't just sing it she acts it. But i have not been able to find Paige O Hara anywhere except on here and she sounds great too. But the sheer power and precision of Lea Salonga makes her the best for me.

This must have been so hard to put together!!! Great job!

I love broadway and I always have, I've always loved this one especially, and *especially* this piece, but it fucking baffles me that anyone at all can listen to these one after the other and then still attempt to claim that Anne didn't do it justice in the movie. She honestly reinvented this piece, this entire character. She finally gave Fantine the actual emotion her character has written. This piece in particular. No one has brought the emotion as well as Anne has. Especially not the anger. Everyone is quick to mention Lea as the best, but she portrays Fantine as this forever hopefuly and bubbly character. Every time I have ever seen her or seen videos of her, she smiles through out this entire piece, and most of the show in general. Also tends to have those few pretty actress tears during this piece. Anne is the first to have finally brought that real rough and raw despair, and finally the anger Fantine allows herself to feel.

My absolutely favorite performances on here. My Top 10: These are all Completely Different Interpretations that just vary from one another - Randi Graff, Judy Kuhn, Ruthie Henshall, Nikki Renee Daniels, Anne Hathaway , Cassie Levy, Jessica Bogart, Rachelle Anne Go, Kerri Ellis and Lea Salonga. Special shout-outs: Simone, and Maureen Moore.

Rose Laurens , Patti Lu Pone and Madelena Alberto. Hands down. The thing about these three is- They play fantine HARD SHES HARD bitter, angry, not romantic, thats cosettes role, a Fantine MUST BE HARD MUST BE ANGRY MUST BE BITTER.. These 3 in 30 years are the best.

On another note, Patti LuPone got called a clod to her face, if you know what I'm talking about.

I’ve listened to Randy on the original cast recording so much she is Fantine to me but I saw it, 3xs on Broadway in the 90s and once in early 2000s that wasn’t my favorite.

I was on vacation in Mexico City in 2003 and I had the great opportunity to enjoy Les MIserables. That night I saw Alejandra Desiderio playing Fantine, she was understudy, my GOd! what a power! what a feeling! what a voice! strong, passionate...one of the best that I ve ever seen in my life.

Easy one - Randy Graff - always will be - her phrasing is unmatched. Listen to Orig Brdwy Recording

Lea Salonga is the best. She played Fantine on the West End and on Broadway and not just in the 25th Anniversary Concert.

Of this bunch, I've seen Betsy Morgan and Caissie Levy live

I know broadway or an official les mis but Susan Boyle gave one of the best renditions

If they decided to switch the song around and make it more gritty like the movie (yes I know this was 06) Daphne’s version could have worked

Ruthie Henshall will always be the GOAT, no one else comes close, even the other greats are not on her level

Holy crap!!! Caissie Levy as Fantine is the best of the best she has the most amazing voice and she is so insanely talented hands down caissie you rule!

My faves are Ruthie Henshall, Laurie Beecham and Lea Salonga. Anne Hathaway also did a great job. Definitely not Melora Hardin.
