Lepo Sumera Symphony Nr. 2 teine Sümfoonia 2. Sinfonie

Музыка

Lepo Sumera (1950-2000) - Symphony Nr. 2 (1. Moderato tranquillo attaca 2. Interludium, 3. Spirituoso), sheet music www.edition49.de played by Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian SSR conducted by Peeter Lilje (1950-1993), Recording engineers Enn Tomson and Lepo Sumera, Editor Mart Maripuu, Design, M. Kaljuste, Digitally remastered by Tammo Sumera (2018)
Lepo Sumera writes - Second Symphony was composed in 1984. lts three movements are based on a couple of recurrent motifs, the basic motif on the harps is heard at the very beginning. Strictly speaking, the whole musical composition expresses itself through this theme - the melody consisling of brief two-note, three-note and four-note sequences (in the first movement) develops into long and "infinite" melodies which pass through all the minor keys (in the third movement). So the third movement is the end goal of the whole symphony. And also the rationale for this composition as it was not the development of musical material which induced me to write it, but a way of achieving liberated melodies aspiring to eternity.
Lepo Sumera kirjutab - ll Sümfoonia on kirjutatud 1984. aastal.

Lepo used to meet friends at my Eesti Maja restaurant in Tallinn. One night while a group of people were sitting around the piano, I played several songs for him that I had written. He listened patiently and when I was finished, he said that my songs were very pretty, but.....the world is full of pretty music. He apparently wanted to hear more, an edge. I didn't really know him back in 1997, but he was gracious. No one could say Lepo's music is "pretty" at best, pretty powerful!

He is considered one of Estonia's most renowned composers along with Heino Eller, Eduard Tubin and Arvo Pärt, though Part enormous introspection depths is not precisely my kind of music.

Music score, that was my first thought. Could u give me more names of composers who make this kind of music. I know John Adams, Michael Nyman, maybe Pettersson's 7th and 8th are similar but much darker.

@@theSvarg I personally prefer modern symphonies which are lithe and teeming with ideas. You can keep going back to these: Henze, especially No 2, Tippett, Roussel, Dutillieux No 1 is mind blowing.... Martinu No 5 (perhaps!) 🙂David
