Lepcha I Darjeeling | Sikkim | Mayel Lyang | Mutanchi Rongkup | Achuley

The Lepchas are the original inhabitants of parts of Sikkim, Darjeeling and Eastern Nepal. They call themselves Rong or Mutanchi Rongkup meaning the eternal children of Mother Nature. They believe that the supreme creator Etboo Debu Rum had created their progenitors the first Lepcha man Foodonthing and the first Lepcha woman, Nazangnyu from the fresh snows of Mt. Kanchenjungha, and then left them in the heaven of Mayel Lyang. They are ardent nature worshippers and practice an animist form of appeasing the spirits. The custodian of their ethnic being is the male priest called the Boongthing and the female priest called the Mun. Lepchas are peace loving community and are vividly share a symbiotic relationship with nature. Their food habits and clothing are procured from nature. Lepchas are very conscious of their ethnic culture and have been consciously preserving them. The modern Lepcha understood that what rich traditional knowledge their ancestors had, regarding civil engineering to medicine, they need to preserve them to have sustainable living conditions on earth. Lepchas have their own language which they have used in writing their own literature, songs and all other cultural expressions even their own philosophy. Lepchas in their preservation of their identity, still take pride in proclaiming themselves to be the oldest life form on earth.

Lepchas are very friendly, hospitable, interesting and easily approachable people. Lepchas or "Rong" are originally from the Border of today's China and Korean peninsula. Genetics and facial structure point that side. This means that the Lepchas along with Kiratis like Rai, Limbu, Magar, etc are genetically closer to the Northern Chinese and Koreans if not identical. On the contrary, Bhootiya are identical to the Tibetans and have more of South Sino-Tibetan ancestry. Linguistically, too the North China and Korea like names are still prevalent in the Lepcha named cities. Meyong, Yumesodong, Yadong county, Rongong, Rong Tong, Kurseong, Kalimpong, etc are all Lepcha named places. Lepcha are however, culturally close to Tibetans with their religion being Tibetan Buddhism, and they were allied to Tibet in the Yesteryears. But genetically, they are close to the Northern Chinese and Koreans, along with the Rai and Limbu populations, then they are to the neighbouring Bootiya, Tamang and Gurung.

Wow, the ritual is very similar to Tibetan. Tibetan were at one point Shamanist - with the advent of Buddhism in Tibet things all changed including sacrifices of animals. I see one word we share equally is 'mik' that's eyes in Tibetan too. The hat craftmanship is amaazing so much detail - the wooden piece Sun and Moon could be found in Mongolian flag as well. Very interesting short documentary. Lol the at the end Namgyal Dynasty forced 'Lamaism' into Lepcha belief system has to be taken with a grain of salt.

@Khun u Hynniewtrep To ia tylli Lepchas n kirati ( limboos) were first ruled by tibbetan Bhutia king from 1642. nepali origin migrated in 18 th century. Lepchas also speak their language. beside Limboo n Bhutia also spoken in sikkim. nepali is spoken only as lingua franca. even a LEPCHA cannot communicate with Bhutia or Limboo who were living before nepali origin without nepali language cuz all three r diff language. n today all r ruling sikkim with diff reserved seat from kings period in assembly. nepali origin itself divided into different tribes. n some tribes r buddhist like gurung n tamang. tamang tribe r more similar with Bhutia( tibbetan) than with other nepali origin. so thr is no such "us" n "them" in sikkim. some thousand Lepchas r also in eastern nepal n western bhutan.
