In today's video I am going to be teaching a beginner how to approach and pick up my leopard geckos, as well as talking about what to do if you accidentally spook your gecko, if your gecko is scared of your hand and what to do if your gecko keeps trying to bite you. I hope this video helps!

    When I got my first adolescent leopard gecko, unfortunately he'd dropped his tail in the container he came in. So I put him in a box where he couldn't climb out/hide anywhere and got (safe) ointment to put on his tush. When I came in with the ointment, he stretched tall on all fours and SCREAMED at me! It scared me so much LOL. The second time I put ointment on him, he bit and hung onto my thumb and since it wasn't painful I just let him do it. When he was all healed up, he got the cutest tear-drop shaped tail and we just got along so well. He would even squeak softly while standing on my shoulder. Every now and then I listen to the video I recorded of his squeaks. I miss him so much. 🥲

    My male that I’ve had for over a year now knows me and my family very well, but he stills hates everyone. He scratches at his door to come out but will bite and hiss at your for offering your hand. This man just hates everyone lmao. I’ve had him since he was a hatchling, immediately went in a bio active 40 gallon enclosure, spoiled beyond belief and just gets mad at everyone and everything. My female was my first reptile ever, she literally sat in a small enclosure for mantids for a few days, then got a 20 gallon with two hides, and reptile carpet. I had no idea what i was doing but it was a surprise birthday gift. This girl absolutely LOVES everyone, loves being held, loves when you pet the top of her head and kinda cover her with your hand sometimes, she will even just sit in your hood. My male has never had anything bad happen to him but he just hates the world lol. I’m hoping this can help deal with him cuz even hand feeding, sitting next to the tank, and working in there with him, he just wont adjust to me. I always back off if its getting too stressful but nothing works for him :’)

    After watching tons of other viedos about handling, I've came out with an interesting long-term strategy, which kind of worked out for my two ladies (one albino, which is super calm, and a raptor which is more lika a little dinosaur). The idea is to get them used to you and get familiar with your face and hands overtime, without forcing any 'hand activities' too much. Since every 'bad' experience they get from facing your hand is kind of kept in their little brain, and it just makes it a bit more difficult every time. Instead, I've tried to use their curiosity and just place my hand right before they walk somewhere, or start climbing things. At first - they kind of got spooked and didn't understand what happened, but, over time, they just started to like it and as a result of such behaviour my two girls now usually just walk onto my arm whenever they feel like 'walking' or exploring things. Albino (I call her Cheese) used to just lay on me for hours, while I watch videos or play on my mobile phone. And Raptor (called her The Burger) likes to just get on top of the shoulder and gaze into the 'abyss' of my living room. It took them ~3 month to get used to hand, and now they are just getting curious whenever 'BIG HAND' appears in their habitat, which also makes it easy to see when they want to get out and have some fun climbing things.

    What Kemi and fiction said: get them used to your sound, wait for them to calm down, then get them slowly. Also, a preparation step before you get them out or let them get a chance to exit the tank: make sure the space is gecko safe. No other pets in the room, no humans that might make sudden movements or noises, cover any holes or crevices the gecko might run into, etc. Some people make "playpens" for their geckos out of big boxes, or fence off problem areas so the gecko can't easily get out of sight. Basically, make sure that you control as much of the environment and area as possible, to reduce the chances they get spooked, and to reduce the chances that, if they get spooked, they'll run into danger. If that's covered, it makes it much easier to apply the things Kemi and fiction said. :)

    Hey so my leopard gecko, Norman, was moved from a home once he turned 5 and was given to me, 11 year old alisah, and he's been using reptile carpet and recently I wanted to switch him to a new substrate so seeing everyone using digging stuff I bought creature soil and he keeps glass hogging now that I have given it to him so I took it our and put a terrarium filter fabric over it and my sister keeps telling me to take it off but idk what to do. It's also kinda messy. But if someone can tell me what to do it would be a great help

    I definitely recommend putting the soil back in. It’s normal for big changes in their environment to stress them out at first, you just need to give him plenty of time to adjust to the change. Half textured tile half soil is a good option as well :)

    @Nighting Gale thank you so much. Your really helpful, I have another tank with no reptile so I put the soil in there with all his old decorations bc I got him new ones and while I'm doing homework or getting ready or doing my hair I sit next to him while he's in the tank with creature soil so he can get used to it so I don't have to take it out or put it back in because last time it was very stressful for both me and him. The only problem I have is that he keeps getting soil in his water and all over his wet hide making me have to clean it every single day. Thank you again he already stopped glass hogging he's just been walking around.

    How much does he weigh and how long is he from tip of nose to tip of tail? Your biggest male, (Diego?)? I have researched. Got 4 different answers. Maybe you can help me a little with this? Like your channel here. I would like to contribute. It's just that I follow several people here and I can't give everyone money. My male Leo weighs 90 grams and is 30 cm long. He is 2 and a half years old. Is this abnormally large? He's not overweight ;) I want to support you in any way I can

    30cm is quite long, maybe he's a super giant? However, a super giant usually weighs a lot more. Diego is 95-105 grams, I'm not 100% sure how long he is.

    What if your gecko is crazy and crocodile rolls if you pick them up? And if she climbs up my my hand on her own accord she will then begin a mad dash that includes jumping like a crestie. She’s been like this her whole life since she was a baby and she’s 6 now, it’s true I never properly tamed her but part of that is just because I worry so much for her safety every time I handle her

  • @leopardgeckotalk

    @leopardgeckotalk

    Жыл бұрын

    Ah that's scary. I wonder if shes runs because when you start to lift her it kind of catches her off guard? I really feel that when taming you've got to put the effort in at the beginning by doing a little bit every day. When people handle them once a week at the beginning its kind of like 'stop-start'ing the tame progress.

    @@leopardgeckotalk That’s probably a big part of it. I got her when I was 9 and never properly got her used to handling and when I did bring her out I would have friends over and she would often escape in the room and I would have to retrieve her. I’ve always felt guilty for doing that to her and now that I’m older I don’t do that, but I have a feeling I may be putting too much blame on myself for it 😅 BUT you have inspired me to really go out and try to tame her! Once I switch out her hide so it’s easier for me to bring her out of the tank, I’m planning one trying to handle her at least every other day hopefully every but we’ll see how it goes

    If the three year old gecko is being rehomed, I definitely recommend getting them (assuming that they’re healthy). Just keep in mind that their setup is likely inappropriate, so you will likely have to replace some of the supplies/accessories he comes with.

    Thank u for suggesting but i already got the baby but the older one was a bit neglected and looked healthy but the guy wouldn't answer any of our questions and he didnt seem available most of the time.but the juv seems to be settling in quite nicely. I handled her before i got her and she was acting normal for a juvenile and they were handled every day. They cared for the geckos very very much and they were sad to see them go and we knew she was healthy cause we personally know all the staff and owner and they take amazing care of their animals .
