It's funny how well regarded "Kelly's Heroes" is with military buffs given how the movie is basically just a buddy/heist movie that happens to be set in World War II. And yet it has better attention to details than most "serious" war movies from that time period.

  • @genericpersonx333

Do mind, Kelly's Heroes was a movie made in large part by men who lived through the war for men who had lived through the war or had grown up with men who had lived through the war, and they could all laugh at the ludicrous plot being imposed on the very real war they experienced together. After all, Eastwood, Savalas, Rickles, O'Connor, Macleod, and MANY others in the cast and production crew were veterans of the armed services and often had war experience, so they not only knew the life of American fighting men, but the boring parts that are integral to the experience.

This is where a “game” like Steel Beasts really comes into its own. Yeah you can simulate ballistics and stuff. But Steel Beasts is hyper focused on the tactics of using tanks. And actually carrying out a mission instead of basically one big team deathmatch like warthunder.

A game that is very low on the realism spectrum but high on the authenticity/mission spectrum is Foxhole. Due to the combined arms, long term and logistics focused nature of the game tanks need to work together with infantry in order to not die and infantry greatly benefits from tanks in order to destroy built up positions.

  • @Grigori423

@@Kenionatus I have played Foxhole quite a bit like year ago. And yeah, logistical aspect in that game is a thing that opens eyes about large scale warfare. Someone have to harvest resources and produce B-Mats, to then convert it into riffles or ammo, and then the next guy is rushing the frontline with his truck to sustain the attack/deffend. And yes, i have hammered some tanks, and mostly bases while under artilery fire. Fighting and dying and making some temporary comradery on the spot. I liked AT riffles for their range and taking up a part of mortar teams when someone who knows how to command properly will spot for us. Kinda weird being able to recognize exactly what they are using in their simulator training. That’s why I put game in quotations. Because steel beasts, to me, isn’t really much of a game. It’s a training tool first, enjoyable game second. But it’s the only tank based game I’ve ever seen that truly captures how important all the other factors are besides penetration numbers and the other minutia that nerds argue about. Well I recently read the Jason Mark´s book Death of the leaping horseman about the 24. Panzer-Division and there it was mentioned in a combat report that the Pz IV short barrel was better than the long barreled one. The long barreled should be used only against enemy armour because the gun is easily damaged in the confined spaces of Stalingrad. The short one was better according to them because it could be used against bunkers and houses.

I think I would enjoy hearing a driver's perspective as well. My brother drove M-60s in the 1960's and explained why one had to be very careful when traversing steep slopes and that driving around and obstacle was usually preferable to risking damaging your track. Spending 20 minutes or more outside the armor to be avoided. And I cannot even imagine you not being objective.

Very interesting to hear opinions from the real deal crewman! i like the understanding for the fact this is a game and not a full simulator, hence things like barrel collision absence is reasonable. the main concern should be the BR system that around midtiers is messy, but from what i got here, actual tankers want to play toptiers mostly. About situational awareness i have to add that if you have a keen eye, you can notice little red arrows appearing on the border of the screen sometimes, indicating a tank or a plane being visible to somewhat simulate a little of the awareness of the other crewmembers. If I don't fire I might be able to reload if he's not aware of my presence and use the proper shell. Then Gaijin made it so that they no longer did damage to players (just annoy the shit out of them) until they finally removed them. Could still score RP and the like from taking them out, they could help to defend flanks and cap points (or attack a flank even) and they also made it a good idea to bring along extra HE and HEAT rounds. Now that smoke, CAS, IFVs, and artillery units are in the game I'd like to see the npcs brought back, but knowing Gaijin it's best to just dream of what could be done, because we know how half assed it would be done.

The thing with War Thunder is that its a unique game where you have almost all aspects working together. Close to Arma 3,but in Arma 3 a Bradley can somehow destroy a M1 Abrams by shooting HE in the front. Thus why War Thunder has insane Tank models and as well as good music. Initially it was a Plane game, and you can feel that as the demand for Modern Jets rises each day for the game. Many from other games have War Thunder as the 2nd choice from the main game such as Ace Combat. But there is a game that is similar to Steel Beasts that is still under work and not into profit called GHPC (Gunner,Heat,PC) Despite playing alone, you still got to control the whole crew yourself as well as a platoon. Personally I play War Thunder out of the Historical aspect of vehicles to experience them. You dont have many games that got Cold War Era vehicles such as the Obj 279 or Obj 775.

In War Thunder, specifically in rank II and III vehicles that we play, Panzer IVs, even Hs, are always an easy kill; we simply use our mouse to aim for their 50mm turret (kaboom). In real life however, at least with the Western allies, competent M4 and Cromwell crews said they could only kill a Panzer IV G/H (reliably) if they got a side shot. The M3 75mm AP rounds would bounce of the hull, even turret hits sometimes. And in real life, M4's had to aim for a weak spot, while on the other hand, the Pak 39 could obliterate them regardless of where they hit Western Allied tanks, English infantry tanks being the exception. All that being said, an simulator like DCS, but for tanks, would not be all that fun for the masses. I've heard that tank museums, like Bovington, have witnessed a renewed interest in armored vehicles in the younger generation; thanks in part to games like War Thunder.

I don’t think you can have an accurate tank sim without infantry and anti-tank guns. It’s simply counter productive as most tanks were designed to fight static position and there is a reason the 75 was preferable over the 76 despite what WT and WOT will tell you.

A Sherman could easily knock out a Pz IV firing HE alone, considering the RoF. The Sherman has ready racks for the ammunition, a much larger turret and the gunner has a periscope with a wide field of view, making it very easy to see the target you're trying to aim at. Not to mention that WP rounds were super effective in blindind tanks and having them buttoned up, turning them into easy targets. Then there's also the issue that the Pz IV won't easily penetrate a Shermans armor from 500m and further.

If it would be the closest to reality, you would need hours or even days to refill the ammo, get the tank fuelled and repaired, and check all the systems in it (mechanical and electronical).
