    Always magnificent !!! I don't usually make any comments like this, but the magnificent singer Beverly Sills who introduced Ms. Price, was diagosed with lung cancer and never touched a cigarette.

    I remember seeing this when it first aired and thinking, that first phrase in Leontyne's younger years could've been done in one breath, but then thought "she was about 64 at the time and I was resigned to just sit back and enjoy the fact that this was an aria that isn't sung by the faint at heart, so I shut up. Beverly Sill's laugh when Leontyne hands the flowers over backstage says is all! Brava Leonyne for performing at the call of duty...and Conductor, James Levine for just being a cushion for all singers.

    Leontyne price is not 90 years old in this concert. She was 64 just a couple of months shy of 65 which is still absolutely phenomenal.. Beverly Sills died when Leontyne was 80 years old in 2007..

  • @Trinite33

    @Trinite33

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@crazyorganist1609 No, they were not. The best singers sing beautifully a large variety of repertoire. Unfortunately, Sutherland, Nilsson, and Callas are only lauded for opera performance for the most part. Perhaps Nilsson can claim some outstanding lieder in her repertoire. A singer will have fundamental weaknesses in the voice if they sing only one or two types of repertoire. Price is regarded as the greatest singer, not only because of her matchless contralto-soprano voice, but also because of her huge repertoire. She is as well praised in Bach, Lieder, Mélodie, Spanish songs ("El Amor Brujo"), American Art Songs, American Folk Songs, Oratory, Hymns, Spirituals, Gospels, and American Popular and Patriotic Songs as she is dominant and lauded for her superlative opera, notably Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss, Gershwin, and Barber for all of whom she is the Definitive Singer. Marcia Davenport, the soprano Alma Gluck's daughter, notes, "Leontyne Price has something that all the great sopranos had and something that none of them had." For that reason alone, she is the greatest singer of them all. Further, she knew well how to manage her voice and her career. She alone of all the singers of the Golden Age retired from Opera and singing in general because she wanted to. All the others retired because they had to; their voices were exhausted. Price's Sterling, Peerless Voice, indeed, The Voice of God, remained intact for her entire vocal career. She came out of retirement at 74 years of age to sing the "9/11 Carnegie Hall Concert of Remembrance" and sounded as glorious and as beautiful as ever. Lastly, she is the greatest singer because she is an excellent pianist, the first step on her training as one of the world's greatest musicians. Mastering the piano makes one a master singer, and Price's spectacular career is living proof of that. Best regards, Jean-Marie

    Does anyone know what year this performance took place? Because if Leontine Price was 90 then this would have taken place in 2017, 10 years after Beverly Sills' death. According to Wikipedia, Ms. Price's active years were between 1952 and 1997. My guess is that this broadcast was in 1997 or thereabouts. It's still amazing and wonderful for Price to sing this beautifully at 70, as she would have been in 1997. As another commenter said: "If you have a great technique you can sing until you die." Ms. Price is living proof.
