Leonardo da Vinci: A collection of 148 paintings (HD)

Leonardo da Vinci: A collection of 148 paintings (HD)
Description: "Da Vinci was one of the great creative minds of the Italian Renaissance, hugely influential as an artist and sculptor but also immensely talented as an engineer, scientist and inventor.
Leonardo da Vinci was born on 15 April 1452 near the Tuscan town of Vinci, the illegitimate son of a local lawyer. He was apprenticed to the sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence and in 1478 became an independent master. In about 1483, he moved to Milan to work for the ruling Sforza family as an engineer, sculptor, painter and architect. From 1495 to 1497 he produced a mural of 'The Last Supper' in the refectory of the Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan.
Da Vinci was in Milan until the city was invaded by the French in 1499 and the Sforza family forced to flee. He may have visited Venice before returning to Florence. During his time in Florence, he painted several portraits, but the only one that survives is the famous 'Mona Lisa' (1503-1506).
In 1506, da Vinci returned to Milan, remaining there until 1513. This was followed by three years based in Rome. In 1517, at the invitation of the French king Francis I, Leonardo moved to the Château of Cloux, near Amboise in France, where he died on 2 May 1519.
The fame of Da Vinci's surviving paintings has meant that he has been regarded primarily as an artist, but the thousands of surviving pages of his notebooks reveal the most eclectic and brilliant of minds. He wrote and drew on subjects including geology, anatomy (which he studied in order to paint the human form more accurately), flight, gravity and optics, often flitting from subject to subject on a single page, and writing in left-handed mirror script. He 'invented' the bicycle, airplane, helicopter, and parachute some 500 years ahead of their time.
If all this work had been published in an intelligible form, da Vinci's place as a pioneering scientist would have been beyond dispute. Yet his true genius was not as a scientist or an artist, but as a combination of the two: an 'artist-engineer'. His painting was scientific, based on a deep understanding of the workings of the human body and the physics of light and shade. His science was expressed through art, and his drawings and diagrams show what he meant, and how he understood the world to work."

Quantum Foam, Your thanks would be highly appropriate, I am sure, if it was not for the mis-information contained in presenting these 147 works as being from the hand of Leonardo. Among the names of the artists represented here are 2:52 Boltraffio 7:20 Giampetrino 7:56 Bernardo Luini along with Salai, the de Predis, and various others.

I saw the London version of "The Virgin of the Rocks" When it was on tour in the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria , Canada almost 20 yrs ago. I was there by happenstance and wasn't expecting to see it. There were no crowds. I was able to look at it for hours from only a few feet away. While the comments that most of the works in this video are not directly from the master's hand are correct, damn it people, just look and learn and enjoy. It seems to me that among his works, there are several representations of Isabella of Aragon, the Duchess consort of the Duchy of Milan, but also the one who was, according to the historian Maike Vogt-Luerssen, the companion of Leonardo da Vinci. The resemblance between Isabella and the character depicted in the famous portrait of the Louvre, known as “Mona Lisa”, seems obvious to me, and I am surprised that specialists have not yet officially recognized it.

Most of these paintings are not by the same artist that painted ‘The Last Supper’ and the ‘Mona Lisa’. They may be by Da Vinci’s apprentices, his contemporaries or people attempting to emulate his style, and some really bad forgeries. I would rather see this collection as photographs on Google so that I can study photographs of them closely. But I guess in no time the site would be full of ‘Girlie Pictures’, ‘Macho Men’ and advertisements. Thank you for the opportunity to view this collection of works claimed to be by Leonardo Da Vinci.

When you look at Da Vinci's sketches and drawings, he was obviously a master of human anatomy. You have to ask yourself, looking at his paintings, why he could not paint the human form for toffee? And also why his "masterpieces" keep showing up and being found in obscure countries around Europe?!

I don't know what the painting it called, and it is NOT by Leonardo, but by a pupil of his. However, I can tell you what the picture is about. It represents Jesus at a moment when he has just been asked a very sticky question. Basically, although he was a scholar of the Jewish scriptures, and regarded as a Rabbi, his interpretations of the scriptures often clashed with conservative views, and sometimes even with widely practised customs. For example, although Jews generally maintained the Sabbath as a day of rest, and the more "righteous" people did this very strictly, Jesus was caught out on several occasions doing things that got him criticised, like picking some grain and rubbing the husks off. This was considered WORK and was forbidden. Jesus' answer to this was very left wing, "God gave the Sabbath (weekly day of rest) for the benefit of people; he didn't make people just to respect the Sabbath." This offended the conservatives, so they were determined to trap him into saying something that was SERIOUSLY wrong. So they asked him "What is the greatest Commandment?" anticipating that he would choose from the Ten Commandments of Moses. But he didn't. He said "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength!" So at this point, all his followers would have heaved a big sigh of relief that he hadn't said anything provocative. No-one could argue. It was a verse from the book of Deuteronomy, and every one of the Priests, teachers and the learned scribes whose job it was to copy the scriptures, they ALL had that verse bound on a ribbon on their arm, and worn in a small container on their forehead. BUT just as his disciples were heaving a sigh of relief, he started again.... "And, there is another Commandment, just as important!" (and the Disciples are all going "Oh no, he is about to put his foot in his mouth again.....") So Jesus jumps to a different book of the Bible, Leviticus, which was a rule book containing a lot of very important stuff, and a lot of things that we would consider completely superfluous, like "Do not wear a cloth woven of two fibres like linen and wool."..... well, there goes all the poly-cotton tee-shirts in the World. So out of all this stuff, what is he going to pick? "And there is another Commandment just as important- You must love your neighbour as you love yourself. These TWO Commandments are SO IMPORTANT that they are the basis for all the Jewish Law and the teachings of the Prophets." This is not what anyone expected That painting shows Jesus indicating that there are two rules for living "Love God, and Love your neighbour." "Ah ha" says one of the listeners, " Who counts as my neighbour?" And at this point Jesus says "There was a man on a journey who was set on by thieves, robbed, stripped naked and left lying for dead by the roadside. Along came a priest, saw him, and walked by on the other side of the road. Then came by another holy man who also avoided him. The third person along was a Samaritan from the neighbouring land. He saw the man, stopped, bathed and bandaged his wounds, put him on his donkey and took him to an Inn." So, says Jesus, "Who acted like a neighbour?" "He that helped him!" And Jesus says "You go and act in the same way!" Now this story looks very straight forward- two of the men were mean and the third one, the foreigner was kind. ....? But it is not that simple. The first two men were GOOD men, obeying the laws of their religion. For them, keeping clean and pure from body fluids was very important for religious reasons. If they got blood, or saliva or perhaps shit from a man who had been terribly frightened, then they would be UNCLEAN, and could not go to the temple without a ritual. The man who was a stranger, followed the God of the Jews, but not the Laws. So it was fine for him to touch the man and help him. So the message there was not just about being kind. It was about not letting religion, or laws, or the rules of the political party, or the club, or the friends that you belong to, get in the way of treating other people in a loving manner. .

Leonardo only has 14 (or 15) paintings. And even those were not all painted by him alone. So i don't understand how can this be useful to students. Unless you like to learn wrong information. Sorry can't let pass this one.

"Leonardo da Vinci’s total output in painting is really rather small; there are less than 20 surviving paintings that can be definitely attributed to him, and several of them are unfinished." Encyclopaedia Britannica. so already you lost credibility as a serious art channel, don't mislead people.
