Lyrics:
When they poured across the border
I was cautioned to surrender
This I could not do;
I took my gun and vanished
I have changed my name so often
I've lost my wife and children
But I have many friends
And some of them are with me
An old woman gave us shelter
Kept us hidden in the garret
Then the soldiers came;
She died without a whisper
There were three of us this morning
I'm the only one this evening
But I must go on;
The frontiers are my prison
Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing
Through the graves the wind is blowing
Freedom soon will come;
Then we'll come from the shadows
Les Allemands étaient chez moi
Ils me dirent, "Signe toi,"
Mais je n'ai pas peur;
J'ai repris mon arme
J'ai changé cent fois de nom
J'ai perdu femme et enfants
Mais j'ai tant d'amis;
J'ai la France entière
Un vieil homme dans un grenier
Pour la nuit nous a caché
Les Allemands l'ont pris;
Il est mort sans surprise
Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing
Through the graves the wind is blowing
Freedom soon will come;
Then we'll come from the shadows

Most 60s giants (cept the Stones and Dylan, and even them to some extent.Neil Young got it together rght at the end of the decade) found the 80s difficult. They weren't helped by the now terribly dated production fashions of the time. Hence Hallelujah didn't take off till John Cale did it straight.
@kevinmathewson4272

@@Spectrescup My own two cents. By the 80s, many people had been persuaded that collective struggle in general was futile. They retreated into their individual lives, and artists who had tapped into those collective yearnings found less to tap into.
Comme chaque fois, je pleure en écoutant cette merveilleuse chanson. Mes grand parents ont connu cette funeste période. Merci Monsieur Cohen

A beautiful song written in 1943 by Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie for the lyrics and Anna Marly for the music. She also composed the "hymn" of the French Resistance "Le chant du partisan". Leornard Cohen gave a soulful performance of this song...

I just heard this song on an album by Jill & Matthew Barber (both Canadians) titled "The Family Album". I saw the credit given to the rightful composer and lyricist. Because I was already familiar with LC's version I recognised it right away. And I always thought this was composed and written by LC. Great song. Recommend you listen to the Barber's rendition also.

I'm from piedmont, in the north of Italy. In my region many boys and girls leaved their home and fought against the fascist regime, and many of them never back home. I want to say: their sacrifice wasn't useless. In 25 april 1945 italy was free from fascism and 28 april 1945 Mussolini was killed by the partisans. Long live to Italy, long live to freedom.

@@end3818it tells the reality of war. An old woman dying without a whisper. Of course it is a great pride to be a partisan and take up arms for your homeland but the sadness about being forced from peace by those who wish you harm for reasons even they don’t understand runs through it all

I feel like Cohen was too pragmatic for this to be an anti war song. To me it feels more like he knew war was big part of the human condition that will be a thing as long as humans are alive and this song is more about fighting the good fight.

Right at the end of the war 1945 he was pit on a Nazi's forced march as a political prisoner. He died age 20 right at the end of the war in Leipzig age 20. Everytime I hear this song I cry buckets thinking about his bravery. His sisters my Mum & Aunt children were also taken and imprisoned, starved and beaten.
