Lyrics:
Come over to the window, my little darling
I'd like to try to read your palm
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
Before I let you take me home
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Well you know that I love to live with you
But you make me forget so very much
I forget to pray for the angels
And then the angels forget to pray for us
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
We met when we were almost young
Deep in the green lilac park
You held on to me like I was a crucifix
As we went kneeling through the dark
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Your letters they all say that you're beside me now
Then why do I feel alone?
I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
Is fastening my ankle to a stone
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
For now I need your hidden love
I'm cold as a new razor blade
You left when I told you I was curious
I never said that I was brave
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Oh, you are really such a pretty one
I see you've gone and changed your name again
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside
To wash my eyelids in the rain!
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again

I think I love his old voice more than anything because he knows what he's singing about.
I discovered LCohen as a young woman getting started in life in Berlin with a guy who became my husband. We spent hours listening to Leonard Cohen in our Berlin flat. His voice will always remind me of those bygone days. Thank you LC. Amazing songs and voice

I discovered Leonard Cohen's music just before I met the love of my life at University and we spent hours making love to his music. Sadly, the relationship didn't last but my love for Cohen's music has been a reminder of those bygone days :)
68 years, cancer survivor, with a 97 year old mum. No relationships for the past 12 years. I have had a lot of time to reflect on life and why we are here. I play this song and have learned it on guitar. I get misty when I read about their time in Delphi and how he told Marianne that he wasn't far behind her before he died. Blessings.

Love this. My parents used to play it loud through the house. I must have been 5 or 6 years old. All gone now. RIP all.
Tears in my eyes! Leonard and Marianne, rest in peace!
´'Well Marianne, it's come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine. "And you know that I've always loved you for your beauty and for your wisdom, but I don't need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. "Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road."'

Great song! Love the 'live' version. Leonard was a genius. He was a poet, novelist, singer, and a legendary song writer. This is one of his best. An homage to a lost, but eternally enduring love. What a song! RIP Leonard & Marianne.... I will listen and love this song till I join you on the other side...

What makes this song so special is the letter Leonard sent to mariann when he heard she was dieing
I don't think any sane person can hold back their tears while listening to this magnum opus by the man himself. What a genius Leonard Cohen was! My go-to song whenever I feel down and blue. ❤
A master artist! Few speak with his candor , openess and genuine honesty. I love him. Leonard Cohen, may you rest in peace in paradise❣

Very lovely, today is my birthday and a shop owner mentioned Leonard Cohen and a song Marianne. So I thought I would look it up and have a listen.
More Cohen condensed into one song you'll probably never find! Simply great!
Great performer, great band, epic... Sometimes makes me cry. Nope. Allways.
I'm new to this singer but falling in love with that voice. I'm sorry I wish I'd known you earlier. But will always listen to you now.
That harmonica is awesome! Hit's deep! Very talented with lots of feeling. I sound like a jerk myself judging all. I have to take it all back My bad! I miss you and your talent Leonard, I miss the band!
Yes, my wife and I walked up the steps to his house in Hydra, Greece. When we opened the door, there was Marien, just sitting there at her desk typing his lyrics, and musical notes on sheets of paper. Then we walked to the window and opened the blinds. OMG what a perfect view of the Mediterranean sea. Here he wrote his best music. Thank you, Leonard Cohen
Saw this man at the I.O.W POP festival in1970 .didn't realize at the time that I was watching the best singer songwriter EVER.

I also saw him in 1970 or 71 at Place des Arts (with his whole band) in Montreal. It was my first time at a live concert. I was 16 or 17. BLEW ME AWAY! Fifty years later, I still love this man...his music will definitely stand the test of time. RIP Leonard.
Thank God and Never Forget A Wonderful Gift to the world..... Leonard Cohen....Memories of you are for Blessings...Rest in Peace 🙏

A series on tv few yars ago played this song out. Both brothers had different interpretations of the lyrics. Cohen was magical in doing that. The series was This Is Us. Was awesome to see them use this song in the show.
Gracias MAESTRO LEONARD COHEN
RIP Leonard and Marianne :')

I sing this version of this song, one that rips me apart every time, to my son every night and it helps him off to sleep! I hope he'll grow to love it as I do.
I’ve never listened to him, I’m a 43 year old music lover, I’ve heard this song a million times before on the radio but for some reason I decided to listen to this live version today… I have listened to it about ten times in a row! It’s so good and I love the way as, an old man he can sing it in such an understated yet powerful way ❤️ thanks for uploading it
One of my 3 favorite songs along with Purple Rain and Rock n' Roll Suicide, and we lost all three artists the same year, so painful.

I cannot believe it is 6 years ago that he died. His music struck such a chord with so many, myself included.
It seems to me that this is one of the best performances of this song.Tears - as always, but changes in the text are also important. He never stopped working on "So Long, Marianne".

Goodnight Leonard. I have listened to nearly every song you ever wrote. Rest in peace Sir.
Hugely talented, love his poetry and music. Sad that he could never commit.
@bb1111116

Sad? Maybe. For some poet/artists a long term commitment can negatively affect their art. I think of Joni Mitchell. Once she got married around 1980 (for 11 years), the number of her new great songs dropped off quite a bit. The exploration of a new love can be the spark which gets the creative mind to come alive.
Have to honest never listen to Leonard Cohen till now all I can say is WOW I be catching up hes class and this is a beautiful song
Wunderschöne Stimme. Ich höre ihn so gerne!

When Leonard died the world died ........... xxx
After watching the documentary of Leonard and Marianne and their love affair in Greece this song only grows.
Foi o melhor dos melhores, dos melhores!
