Lyrics:
Seemed the better way
When first I heard him speak
Now it's much too late
To turn the other cheek
Sounded like the truth
Seemed the better way
Sounded like the truth
But it's not the truth today
I wonder what it was
I wonder what it meant
First he touched on love
Then he touched on death
Sounded like the truth
Seemed the better way
Sounded like the truth
But it's not the truth today
I better hold my tongue
I better take my place
Lift this glass of blood
Try to say the grace
Seemed the better way
When first I heard him speak
But now it's much too late
To turn the other cheek
Sounded like the truth
Seemed the better way
Sounded like the truth
But it's not the truth today
I better hold my tongue
I better take my place
Lift this glass of blood
Try to say the grace

I was a soldier in a long terrible war. The war was over, and I thought I survived the worst. But I was suddenly diagnosed with brain cancer. Through all these years Leonard’s music offered me spaces for my small retreats. I had two divorces and bunch of other problems. But Mr Cohen always comforted me. I saw him at the very end of his life and off course, he didn’t know why I was crying. Thanks Leonard.

The way his voice wavers at 1:39 when he's talking about hearing what sounded like the truth is so devastating. I hear him revisiting a deep emotional investment into what he needed to be true, and struggling to vocalize his crushing realization that it was, in fact, not. It's so universally human to lose faith in that which once provided answers.

The only answer is in ourselves and our ability to retake responsibility for every single thing in our lives. Every giving up of it opens the possibility for self destruction. This is where we are at...and while I am writing this the redefine advert for artificial meat comes on...one of the selling phrases is "kinder to animals" haha!! They are killing animals every day, with their lab experiments, their polluting practises, killing the soil they depend on!! It's just another way to weaken us and destroy life on earth

Let's live their songs if we can. Put competition and rivalry aside . We insult the song if we try to beat each other up using our "superior " musical taste as a weapon. I apologize for preaching which could also be a form of aggression -its damn difficult to do anything perfectly right including the making of this comment.

The man wrote the greatest songs for over 50 years and produced these last songs for a farewell to all that appreciated and loved him. His tour at 80 years of age and flat broke netting more that $8 million tells all about the man and his message to all that will listen. Bob Dylan's comment when he recieved the prize tells all that needs to be said.

Leonard Cohen was a genius of this and the past century. Words. Words. Words. So many simple words, formed into such a beautiful complexion of the shades of grey and black (not the movie or book). May you rest in peace, mister Cohen.

Ti aspetto.

Seemed the better way When first I heard him speak Now it's much to late To turn the other cheek Sounded like the truth Seemed the better way Sounded like the truth But it's not the truth today I wonder what it was I wonder what it meant First he touched on love Then he touched on death Sounded like the truth Seemed the better way Sounded like the truth But it's not the truth today I better hold my tongue I better take my place Lift this glass of blood Try to say the grace Seemed the better way When first I heard him speak But now it's much to late To turn the other cheek Sounded like the truth Seemed the better way Sounded like the truth But it's not the truth today I better hold my tongue I better take my place Lift this glass of blood Try to say the grace

Mr. Cohen you are like your name says a priest, a priest to many, chosen by the Father of your ancestors Abraham, Izak and Jacob. That is the way your heart beats, it is in your genetics , in your veins, you can not stop the inspiration. Like a broken vessel you sing about the cracks but the light keeps coming through. Thank you for your honesty and your love. Your words were there when I met my wife, I played our song “I’m your man” to her over the phone, it did the magic then, and I’m dancing her to the end of this live… Love you!

Wow I never heard this You Want it Darker before. What a fantastic collection of songs. I love everyone of them, then I love everything LC does. Could listen for hours, and I do. Thanks for the post. Darker is haunting, almost a requiem, for himself, for us all. Damn, what a talent. I've been listening to him for 40 years.
