Villas Lobos was a genius. And Bernstein was a very well known man on social, history and politics. Just like a maestro has to be.

I really miss Leonard Bernstein. I loved hearing his descriptions, and explanations of these incredible pieces of music. God rest his soul. I came only to hear Villa Lobos. I am very grateful not only to hear this music, but also to understand it much more completely.

Great to see Villa-Lobos' genius being acknowledged by Bernstein, another great master of music. There is an infamous quotation by Stravinsky in which he stated that every music he disliked, he later found out that had been written by Villa-Lobos. I don't know what Stravinsky was referring to, Villa was one of the most prolific composers of all time, having written over 1000 works. But I dare to say Villa's Choros no. 10, his tone poems Uirapuru and Floresta do Amazonas and some of his Bachianas Brasileiras are at the same level as anything the great Russian master wrote. His guitar work is also very important, paired with those by Rodrigo, Barrios, Brower, Albéniz, etc. a true Brazilian genius!

After graduating Julliard and composing "West Side Story" .. "Lenny' had a brilliant TV series in the early 60's where he would analyze the similarities & differences between cultures & music. Often arriving at reasons of why Music is the Universal Language ... The TV series is on DVD (and dispersed throughout You Tube), thanks for posting this one .., PS, in West Side Story there is the Habanara "AMERICA" (: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, | 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2:)

*Wasn't he grand.* His "Young People's Concerts:" were his very best performances imo. Teaching with passion, respect and conviction that the gift of Music is in all and belongs to all, and passing that along to the masses. We could benefit from those classes today.

Thankfully the Portuguese and Spanish didn’t exterminate the “Indians” like it actually happened in North America. Rather than that, they married and mixed their genes with them and that’s why there are such big native cultures spread across Latin America.

@@Beowulf_93 I mean, they did exterminate. Much less than the spanish, but still quite a lot. Look at, for example, the Tupinumbá Uprising in Brazil, where the portuguese massacred many indigenous who were fighting to defend their land. And even then, the portuguese erased their culture, language, took their land and enslaved them sometimes. More than 50 thousand indigenous have been enslaved.
