How utterly delightful to hear this orchestra playing Lennie's own music!

Those last three lyrical minutes of melody seem to envelop Bernstein in a warm waterfall of his own creation. What joy went into the writing of this melodic section, what creative satisfaction he exudes, without lifting a finger. He conducts with his eyes.

This was either Sat 13. October 1984 or Sun. 14. October 1984 took me a while to even find this hall and the performance. Those dates are the only ones they have on record in their hall. :)

More likely the 13th, since this concert was taped for UNICEF on the 13th, but not the 14th

He's not conducting, he's dancing or - if you will - singing. Many musicians, while listening to music, do this, although most of us aren't filmed listening to music. A different question is the camera cutaways, where you see Lenny's hand go up to his face. Is he scratching his nose or wiping away a tear? Probably the former, as there isn't much evidence of the latter. And stick around to the end, when the camera dares to catch Lenny as he descends the podium and walks back through the orchestra. He was so short!

At around 5:23, I wonder why Bernstein chose to quote the Beethoven fifth symphony oboe solo directly (melody, rhythm, and even the instrument is all identical). He clearly felt a close affinity to Beethoven's music, but I would assume that he did this to achieve special dramatic effect as the music progresses...

mooriable That oboe solo is quoted a whole lot, or at least alluded to, throughout music. There’s something about it that just sounds perfect, it’s one of the most remarkable phrases in music.

Somehow the “B.S.O. March Forever” sounds like Shostakovich to me as the music turns into a rip-roaring circus close to the universe of Shostakovich’s Sixth and Ninth Symphonies. And it seems that Bernstein had fun quoting Berlioz’s rendition of the Rákoczi March at 13:02 !

I have just noticed how many reminiscences are here from Candide. As if he just summarized and synthesized it.

Bernstein was fairly talented as composer, but not quite like Mozart. He made a lot of mistakes. In many bars there' s missing an eighth or a sixteenth. Sometimes there are funny harmonies which my harmonica teacher never would have accepted. Sometimes the trombones seem to have to look for their right notes as Bernstein maybe wrote them in an unreadable way. And in the second movement the winds always sit around and do nothing. That' s not economic.

@@hansgrau6635 The most stupid comment you ever read?! Bernstein simply drank too much Whiskey, and you can hear that in each of his notes! Imagine Mozart' s "Sonata facile" composed by Bernstein! Imagine this lovely piece full of dirty harmonies written by a melancholic American jazz (or bar?) pianist! Horrible!

@@hansgrau6635 No, it was Bernstein who had a poor, unhappy life. Of course he was a famous conductor and pianist, and also he was fairly good in writing notes. But you can hear in his compositions that- deep in his Inner- he was a bar pianist. He should have played for and smiled at the people in the restaurants, hotels and so on. He should have done what the young ladies would have told him to: "Play it again, Lenny!"
