I've seen EVERYONE live, but when I saw Leon Russell sing Masquerade with Edgar Winter on alto sax in a Toronto night club I knew I was experiencing the most transcendental musical moment of my life. ... Elton John is absolutely right to regard Leon as a musical God.

One of the greatest moments for me was seeing Leon at the BUT (Belly Up Tavern) several years ago. A Song For You is just sublime! To top it off, in the middle of his concert Johnny Rivers walked on stage so they did a few of Johnny's hits like Secret Agent Man and Slow Dancing (Swaying to the Music).

Saw him first during the Joe Cocker "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. The impression that Leon made on stage, though he was a "sideman," is indelible. The show was at San Francisco's Winterland. Van Morrison, just after his "Moondance" LP, was second bill. I'm almost 73-years-old. That show was the greatest of the three best shows I ever saw. The Beatles (Chicago's International Amphitheater; August, 1966), because of their being idols of mine, and Bob Marley and the Wailers (Santa Barbara County Bowl; May, 1976) were the other two. Because of having seen these live shows, I consider myself very fortunate.

I first saw Leon in 1972 at the Boston Tea Party I was 20 years old it was the beginning of a life long enjoyment of following his music and lyrics I never really enjoyed piano in rock music until Leon opened my eyes and mostly my ears to it. I saw him some 40 years for the last time when he played in Foxborough Massachusetts at the Patriots stadium in a small venue I sat two booths from him and it was the closest I sat next to him and his piano he played for almost two hours of the most entertaining music I’ve ever heard and I’m 68 now and have seen my share of rock since the mid 60s I thank the music Gods for letting me grow up and live through Leon’s music career I’ll never forget you Leon I still listen to him on Vinyl and CD. He tickled the Ivory like no other from Rock to Love music. If you remember the Wedding Album a great Love Album, still tears me up to this day. Thank you my man for all the wonderful song you played and music you have written that so many never new you wrote to help other people become famous. And yes to who ever it was that made the comment that Elton Jon helped him finish his career where he deserved to be at the top. Rest In Peace music man. A forever fan Tom Soyden

I'm just in a Leon kind of mood tonight watching a lot of his stuff. Never heard him do this before. This song by Danny O'Keefe came out in 1972 I just graduated from college in Omaha and stayed in town and got a job. Everyone I hung with also graduated....and left town. After a few months, I couldn't take it anymore, quit the job and took off hitchhiking and ended up on Cape Cod. This was pretty much my theme song and said it all for me at that time. Beautiful song with such a haunting feeling to it.

As I recall, I saw someone from the tour interviewed- can't remember if it was one of the female back-up singers, or...nonetheless, to paraphrase: Leon eventually took over the entire "production" of the tour, and as Joe became more and more "ineffectual", and unable to assert his vision; his playlist; his drinking became prohibitively alarming! He was dooming his performances, and no one stepped in to "encourage" him/or Leon to augment things- for the sake of the Tour. The shows were so spectacular, I don't think most fans felt there was a big problem. That was Leon's greatness, however. He surely was a Master of Space and Time, and already a legendary icon -across so many musical genres, and with so many artists. It was no secret that he eventually took over, but in hindsight, many "critics' wrote of their shock that this would be a surprise to anyone - least of all to Joe's personal band. Joe will forever be remembered as a Rock 'n' Roll original. Sad for Joe that Leon was a seasoned steamroller, and unintentionally caused Joe to be underappreciated. I asked Leon to sign "Hummingbird" on my tee, and he was kind enough to comply. I am grateful I got to see him when Elton made a push to get him out on the road, again. What a gift ! May they ALL rest in PEACE!!

From Sinatra to Harrison Leon was top shelf. He told a story once about recording with George Harrison. George was a perfectionist and after dozens of takes Leon was tired of the BS. So he went back and played a take for George. G. H. loved it an asked which one was it? Leon stated It's the first take George! The guy was a unique and very special musician Love you Mr.Russell RIP Sir!

One of a kind! Simply THE BEST EVER! Saw Leon & Willie Nelson in Bakersfield, CA. @ Buck Owens' Crystal Palace (one of the best smaller/intimate clubs anywhere) many years ago. Was able to talk to each of them briefly after their terrific show. Just wanted to tell them both how much their music & that night's special collaboration meant to me. Leon had "a hitch in his git-along" that looked painful. When I asked him if he was OK, he said it was because he'd had hip replacement surgery. I wished him well & thanked him & Willie Nelson for one of the most enjoyable & memorable performances it had ever been my pleasure to attend. Then and now (in 2018). TWO TOTAL LEGENDS IN ONE SHOW! BEST NIGHT EVER!!! God bless 'em both!**

While knew of Leon since the 1970’s I did not really listen to his music much. I bought some old records and it included some Leon’s records. I have really enjoyed them, guess I needed to “grow up” to the point that I appreciated his music.. some many legends have left us, we are lucky we have their recordings. Not to mention his songs recorded by others, good stuff!

I have absolutely NO idea, it surprised me entirely. I was so shocked I sent a quiet response saying how humbly I appreciated a note from such a great musician and that Leon Russell was the BEST pianist we ever had. I guess I was simply lucky. I don't like to bother famous people so I was pretty concise and extremely polite. A real honor. Leon knew ALL of those people, he played on MANY albums that most people aren't aware of. Background player. He helped Dean Martin write music. He was amazing and entirely underestimated. His family must be pretty lonesome. One daughter has 26 dogs that drove him 'crazy' but I bet they LOVED him.

The first concert I ever saw was in LA, 3 Dog Night, Elton John, and Leon Russell with his back up singer Rita Coolidge. I think it was around 1970, large arena venue. My first boyfriend was a bouncer there on week ends so I'd get in free. What amazing performers. Couldn't sit down for the whole concert, real music .
