Lyrics:
Let me slip through (Let me slip through)
Why you tryna hold me back? (I ain't)
I’m just tryna move up front
Lil more of this, lil less of that (Can you feel me?)
Let me come through (Let me come through)
I’m tired being in the back (Aight)
I’m just tryna move up front
A lil more of this, a lil less of that, yeah
They tell me I was born to lose
But I made a good good thing out of bad bad news

If you think soul is a mover and shaker of this song than you're dead wrong.. This rytham section is a classic 90s deep house base and it's that what makes this song so special. If somebody hears this and doesn't want to get up and make a few dancing moves than he's white or a black man who recently done a hip replacement .. 🤣

Every time I watch this video I am blown away by how absolutely masterful this is in every element; the music is crisp and tight, gliding along on velvet rails with sweet horns and smooth vocals; the cinematography is dynamic and invigorating in its pace, and that woman ("Paloma Esesser Woman" in the credits) is the most captivating presence I think I've ever seen. And Leon lets me see this for free? God bless you and thank you, brother, for sharing this beautiful work of art.

Artists such as Leon Bridges really set the precedent of music in this generation. Such a well put together, timeless piece, him and Masego would be awesome on a song together.
Leon, this song, & Paloma... a combination that remains hard to beat.
I can vibe to this song the whole day. I've known about Rivers for a long time but I am glad I decided to listen to the rest of the album. I must say the whole album is magnificent and I will go to his concerts once the pandemic is over.

Leon cares about the composition. He gives a damn about musicianship. Another excellent piece from him. Paloma Elsesser excels in her role as performer here. Her StyleLikeU interview on KZread is an equally good watch. Very enlightening.

Gosh. The ending doesn't entail her simply tracking down some cat-caller and "confronting him with her mind" or rubbing his chest with the "most powerful part of her" or even "marking him" like a cat in response to his cat-call. She has her own turmoil, and he's the representative of it. She approaches him with her hand on his neck which literally puts him on his heels. But she takes the time to look into his eyes and then lay her head on his chest, giving him enough time to even embrace her if he would, although that's obviously not what she's after from him (or it). She makes the head turn with full eye contact into his eyes, so he can see her from every angle. Fearless. She's not intimidated by whatever he represents for her. She even stares him down before walking away. It's simply ending the video with the protagonist in turmoil from something or someone, chasing it down, trying to understand it, dancing through it, smiling through it, crying through it, then confronting and finally walking away from it (him). She's done peeking around corners at what's been eating at her.

I like these interpretations. I love that art brings out new stories in us, reflective of our own beauty, even if the origin was somewhat different for the artist. I saw the final contact as her giving back what wasn’t hers, wiping it off on him with full intention; “keep that to yourself.” She keeps the rest, as others mention, the “going through” and emergence to the other side with new strength and meaning from her experiences. I love that her going through was also public, not hidden, even to the end as there are bystanders where she confronts the whistler. Making good things out of bad news right in the open for all to see - that’s admirable.

Smiling Smiggy I think @Citizens’report 876 is making a point about race politics. Apparently, a child born to a white-classified mother in GA could be classified as white regardless of father’s ethnicity, whereas the same child would be black to a black mother. (I didn’t know this - still in law??) That seems simple enough, but now add the complex disadvantages of 1) a child born of violence to a disadvantaged mother, 2) this child resembling the rapist in features and skin tone but, 3) not being able to claim the documented social advantages of government-sanctioned whiteness due to a state law, and you have a little of the idea intended - that some children are born into loss. Further interpretation: I think Citizens’report is also attempting - with this “raped by the weak white male” analogy - to capture a cultural and institutional “rape” that allowed families and entire groups to be deemed *born to lose* so that their continued oppression could be justified and incredible wealth and status gained at their expense. Ultimately, though, despite the barriers, with a little elbow grease, lemonade can emerge from the lemons.
Woah! Literally all the emotions we as women feel whenever this happens... you get angry, cry, try to forget it happen with a good song and also feel the urge to chase him down and confront him. This is sooo good! At the end she rubbed her head against him, to me that means she exposed him the intellectual part of her body. *Slow clap* to the team, amazing!

you cry when someone whistles at you?
@chelseat177
6 жыл бұрын
joe shuler yes, sometimes when you're alone and a man catcalls or whistles at you, you don't know if you'll be killed or attacked. You fear for your life because so many women have been killed for not giving men their numbers or ignoring them
@oddlilbird
6 жыл бұрын
joe shuler I understand that if you’re a good man who’s never even thought of being violent toward a woman, and who has never felt threatened in the same way, it would be difficult to understand why a woman would cry because of a catcall. In general, there are few men that I could take in a fist fight, so if I’m walking down the street, a hallway, platform, or stairwell that’s fairly empty and a man keeps getting closer to me, telling me things he likes about my body, trying to get me to respond to him, getting agitated because he’s not getting the response he wants-I’m terrified. I’m thinking of how I can be prepared for the unexpected. I’m walking faster, hoping to see more people, hoping he’ll give up, hoping he won’t get angry. Of course this doesn’t happen every time we get catcalled, but it happens often enough in a woman’s life that we feel the difference between the harmless and the potentially deadly. I, like a lot of women, enjoy a respectful, “You’re beautiful. Have a nice day.” But you wouldn’t believe some of the things men will dare say to a woman on the street-and if they don’t know what is socially acceptable and what isn’t-he’s probably a little crazy. Ps. We usually cry after we get away from them without getting hurt-out of relief.

Don't make assumptions, they don't help anyone (; I absolutely adore his older style but rather than seeing him stay in a box I'm glad to see him experimenting! Yeah, yeah it's producer influenced, but he obviously chose that producer for a reason. Artists don't make progress if they stay stagnant. I also definitely still hear his older style in this, it's very still very Leon in it's own right. *edited to fix a spelling mishap

It's out and it's great
I am from Colombia and I love all his songs. I think Leon is a real artists, singers like him don't exist too much nowadays!💜
This song personifies every quality of music to its height, this is a masterclass production. The funky get-down beat, the simple horn rhythm mixed with the jazz improv, the blues lyrics followed by the soulful chorus... everything about this calls back to the African-American story of music. One of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
Amazing video. I love the way they draw those connections between Paloma and Leon as they're dancing. And the song...it's everything. It's groovy, it's jazzy, it's soulful. Also, shout out to the Fender Jazzmaster at 3:54. My heart is happy every time I see one featured in a video somewhere.
The song and video are everything. I love that art like this can be interpreted into almost anything relatable on a personal level because of the depth of it. So many layers to it, like somebody shared in the previous comments. I know this video was intended to address catcalling and women setting a standard by taking the opportunity to turn something negative into a positive. My interpretation of it was this; The color red is very symbolic, it can represent danger/bad..or elegance and fierceness. In this situation I think it meant both. She was on her way to her destination and focused on the path ahead. Until, she heard something whistle at her. In which she then got taken off her path, and tried to follow this man, whom at this point we haven't seen the face of. She displays feelings of discomfort and determination. As she follows it as comes face to face with this man. This man can be a representation of her past, all the labels placed on her by people who know her on a personal level, all the limitations placed on her..that try to haunt her as she's rises above these labels, she finds the strength to look doubt, and lies into the face by embracing and acknowledging (head on chest) that she knows what's been said but she knows none of that defines her. Her own way of looking at her past in the face and letting it know it ends there, she's whole and enough. She made a good good thing, out of bad bad news. What are y'all thoughts? Did someone else view it like this?

That "Texas Sun" is tight, make sure you check out his video for "Beyond", a true Texas Flava'
Leon has such a beautiful voice, his music is timeless. I can only hope he’ll come up to Canada for some shows. Nothing beats live music.
This video has more depth than I can even begin to articulate. But there is one very strong message I am picking up on. The lady in the video is gaining courage to stand up for herself. She is deciding not to be a victim. Ladies and Gents, be the first to stand up for yourself. Yes, it does take courage but you have to try. You will discover strength you never knew you had. Hugs!
Subbed after this one song. "I made a good good thing out of bad, bad news" speaks to me on so many levels right now.
This man always seems like he has a ton of love for everyone. I want to hug him for all of us. It will likely turn in dancing though.

I'm embarrassed to say now that I'm in love! This Melody! This Rrrrythm! This collaboration and your subject of elation! It all up lifts me! I love it I feel it and I dig it fully. I appreciate your creative artistry. Got me in my feels and at a loss for words...
Man I love this guy. His songs are trully medicine to me. His voice is so healing and beautiful. keep going going and never stop please. Because we need you in this world.
She and he are in sync, their moves are mirrored by one another.... it’s almost as if his movements are controlling her, and there’s times when she loves it and there’s times when she hates it. It’s difficult to be so in sync with someone sometimes. There’s times when you want to do your own thing, times when you want to make moves in your own direction. But when your connected to someone else you can’t! Your always drawn back to them..... ☺️ that’s my interpretation of the video
Leon is such an artist, along with great music he captures such deep emotions and feelings while creating a story about people . .
I can dig this for sure! Its a great combination of a jazz and funk soul sound. I really really enjoy this and if I ever get a chance to catch a show, you can bet I'll be there. Cheers!

Exactly. People are mentioning how this is a good old soul music. Yes there's some soul in it but people who were partying during the 90s know that this is a throwback to the good old days of deep house music, parties (sometimes illegal), explosion of electronic music and the second coming of the hippie era with the ecstasy. Oh how this bring me back to my 20s. Not a worry on my mind. Just dancing, partying, loving and living....
