    Mr Compton gets it wrong here. At (2:42) he levels the bowl atop the tripod, or so he says. What he actually does is get it kinda level within some rough measure of bubble in spirit. He sets the camera, but then at (2:50) quickly makes a minute adjustment of the geared head to finesse the camera electronic level, which of course means that now any panning will skew. So Compton blows it. In order to do this correctly, you must have the geared head set to 0 marks in all plains, THEN use the bowl to level the camera with the camera electronic level. You IGNORE the bubble level, which is too inaccurate for panning unless you plan to crop the final stitched image. The moral here is Occam's Razor, "Do not unnecessarily multiply contingencies." Ie don't bother using a ballhead or other multi movement device atop a leveling base, unless it has dents for top dead center (which no ball head does). Just put a panning clamp on the leveling base, use the electronic level and that is it.

    hahahah what you are saying is not always correct if you get the electric level correct id does not mean the panning part of the head is level thus not making a straight pan.. i did make an adjustment as you see but i was also making a video and my concentration on the photo was at half mast.. so if you follow what i was saying then you will be ok. plus no pano needs to be 100% as you will away crop it, the moral of this story is to get a levelling base and you will get a better chanace at a good pano.. hahaha

    Interesting. I have a leveling base. A Manfrotto that uses a clamp above the legs. I originally thought that when the leveling base was level the camera would be too, but not necessarily and you seemed to have to level the camera after leveling the base. Good to know. It's reassuring all is well. So now I know once the base is level that doesn't necessarily mean the camera is. You still need to level the camera body.

    I recently started shooting with Leofoto tripods and I have to admit they are like hitting the sweet spot between Manfrotto and and more expensive Gitzos...was curious about the leveling head came upon this video. Thankyou for a greeeeaaaat video on the product will need to invest in one for shooting videos. cheers I m kinda lost so the YB-75MP that you use can extend couple of cm up? and the low profile is like your stuck in one height?

    I have a Leofoto Tripod with an inbuilt levelling base but I’ve been struggling to attach the Manfrotto Fluid Head such that they are both level with each other. For your Sunwayfoto three way geared head how did you ensure it was level when fitted on top of the levelling base? Cheers

  • @paulcomptonpdphotography

    the level base is mobile you just level it off then the geared head it ready to set and use the bubble of the camera lever to get it right

    @@paulcomptonpdphotography thank you for the response. So what method did you use to first attach the 3 way geared head to the new levelling base? This is where I’m struggling to attach the Fluid head I use so that it’s also level when the levelling head is level. Having stewed the head on top if i use the bubble of the levelling head to ensure it’s level then pan the fluid head left to right it is not level all the way through - so I’m guessing there’s a method applied when first attaching the head that ensures both are level with each other?

  • @paulcomptonpdphotography

    @paulcomptonpdphotography

    the only bubble you need is the one on the level head, once that is level what ever you pan from there is level, but you do have to level the camera with the digtal level in camera or fit a bubble to the cold shoe.. maybe i need to make a video about this

  • @cjones7246

    @@paulcomptonpdphotography I am so sorry - I don’t think I’m explaining this very well. I have a Leofoto tripod with an inbuilt leveller - like the one you have but it can’t be removed. I have a Fliud head from Manfrotto. The leveller has a bubble so before I attached the fluid head I make sure the leveller bubble is level. I then attach the fluid head which also has a bubble and adjust the 3 tiny screws in the tripod leveller to ensure the bubble on the attached fluid head is also level. So now I have the fluid head attached to the tripod and both the leveller bubble of the tripod and the bubble on the fluid head show they are level. I assume therefore that when I pan using the fluid head I will remain level at all times - this is not the case. As I pan the bubble on the fluid head shows me I am no longer level either to the left as I pan nor to the right as I pan. The level indicator on my Nikon D850 agrees that I am no longer level. So I’m trying to seek guidance on how to properly set up a head (fluid, ball, 3 level) on a levelling base so that whenever you pan the head is always level - as shown in your video here 🙂 Hope this clarifies the problem I have 🙂

  • @paulcomptonpdphotography

    @paulcomptonpdphotography

    It sounds like your are looking at a bubble on your fluid head that is not on the pan access plain, if you set the level base with the bubble smack in the centre of the ring this will mean what ever is on the plain will stay 100% level, of your now attach a ball head yout can not use the bubble in the head nor in the top clamp plate this may show it right but if your not panning for the level plain it will move, as the same for a geared head and your fluid head i am not sure what that is but i have googled it and it looks like a large video head.. So in short you need a bubble on the top of you cold shoe mount or inside the digital screen, this is the only way to get yout camera level once the base is set, i am going to make a very short video now for you to try and explain...

    These half ball heads are only of interest if the photographer does a lot of panoramic shots. You'd need a two axis panoramic head to finish it off. In most cases it offers nothing but added weight. The tripods accommodating these are also devoid of central height adjustment, for obvious reasons. A simple bubble level contraption on top of the camera, or the use of the internal camera level does the same job, otherwise.
