    To live in groups peacefully we must hold common beliefs. Beliefs are like axioms, they are not derived rationally. A common religion is required for a community to prosper.

    David F. North’s ‘The Religion of Technology ‘ is consonant with what Strauss seems here to be driving at, in much more historical detail and better English. The revival of millennium thinking in the 12th century the expectations of which- notably by Irenaeus of Lyons- were suppressed at the Council of Ephesus in 431.
