Lenovo, I hope you are watching this video, to see the proper way to construct your faulty yoga hinge. I fixed my lenovo thinkpad yoga 14 the ez way: I quit using the hinge 99% of the time, before it broke, after hearing all the horror stories of Yoga owners. When I saw the problem developing (with the screen coming apart/ off the cover: I just quit opening & closing the screen/ cover (especially when I heard how Lenovo blames customers). I tried to squirt in some lube, but it does not help. So I just keep the screen up & open all the time, with greatly limited laptop use around the house. No more yoga function: laptop, tent, tablet; what a lie feature by Lenovo. 'Yoga' is worst than a regular normal laptop. At least a normal laptop can open & close. My 'special' yoga must be kept in one position all the time & I can't close the cover except for laptop repairs/ very special needs. I use it just for specific tasks now. If I ever must close it, I pinch the screen near the bottom, where it is coming apart, & rotate very carefully to manually hold these parts together by pinch with my fingers, so it won't break. So this 'maneuver' of finger pinch is the 'new' hinge. It sounded like such a great idea to have a yoga 3 in 1. Instead, I now use a kindle as a tablet, & I bought a 2nd small laptop to use as a general laptop, & the messed up hinge yoga 14 is mostly my art laptop now, used to power a wacom drawing tablet in my art room. So there you go: the best 3 in 1 is 3 separate devices. I heard there is a class action lawsuit in Minnesota over this 'yoga' lie by Lenovo.

Keeping the yoga 14 thinkpad in one spot & open all the time also solves the piece of crap charger issues, with cheap charger cords that fall apart because the wires are thin & not protected from bend due to the side plug in (instead of rear plug in; probably for Lenovo profit on charger cords). I wrapped the fragile place with electric tape, & avoid bends since I must keep the laptop in one spot, screen open. Next time I'll buy a desktop, with more hefty parts, since I must keep the laptop positioned like a desktop. No more 3 in 1.

Even if they are watching, I doubt they will bother improving it. As its more beneficial for them to fail just outside of the warranty period - "Money, money, money..." Especially now, being 100% owned by a CCP backed company. They dont even need to oblige to eu/us rules and regulations, i.e. fair trade, competivenes, etc.

Everything is repairable. The main question is how much you would be willing to invest for something that will last longer than your next laptop or the whole top case replaced.

This is a cool and useful video... however there is another useful step. The hinge tension is created by 2 nuts on the outer edge of the hinge, which can be accessed when it is removed from the housing. No matter how much you clean and lube the hinge, it can still have too much tension (even after cleaning/lubing my hinge was EXTREMELY stiff to move by hand). By merely slightly unscrewing these tension nuts (you can see them at 2:43, they are at ends of the hinge shafts, facing the C made by the gentleman's thumb and finger) you can GREATLY reduce the hinge tension, making the hinge open/close MUCH easier and creating MUCH less stress on the hinge mounts. I suspect a lot of the issue in manufacture was due to the nuts being installed too tight.

That's correct. It seems like dust and fluf mixed with the grease on the hinges stifens them up.

I've repaired some minor issues with electronics and installed parts on older desktops but this repair process seems delicate and complicated. The lower left corner of the screen is cracked now too so that would probably mean also replacing the screen. Like someone else commented it just stays open all the time. Been researching new laptops but they're riduculously expensive and I don't trust anything with these small hinges. Funny thing is I have never used it as a tablet and it still got stiff and broke my screen.

Every opening and closing the screen on unserviced hinges puts strain on the plastic support of the hinges. Regardless if it's opened 45* or 300*, I'm afraid. All brands and models suffer from this issue. 2in1s are the worst 😔

2.5mm rivets. But make sure to check the inner diameter of the hinge on the back cover first. Lenovo have 100 different combinations for the same model :/ throwaway design company

Hey just wondering what size rivets you are using. I am concerned that they will stick out too far on the inside and prevent the screen from sitting comfortably. Do I need to have the little saw to shave it down on the inside?

Depends on the hinge inner screw size. Most are 2.5mm others 3mm. We had some HPs at 4mm. They are the worst. Needs to make sure it fits as best it can otherwise screen will move sideways.

@@ITSolveRepairs I have the same question. How would you recommend attaching the other side of the hinges? The threaded attachment points are under the keyboard cover, and I'm afraid protruding nuts or bolts will scratch the screen when it's closed. Another option would be to go through the bottom cover, but it would require getting a stack of washers or something to act as spacers for four of the six hinge holes.

Depends on the model. Haven't seen this model to break on the palmrest as it has a metal shield on top of the nuts. Had another model that broke on the base and rivets worked great. Just need to make sure they are flat as possible, and when you rotate the screen, it has at least 1mm gap with the keyboard to hold the flat side of the rivet

@ghiyzt Some Dells have an aluminium base for hinges. Such as XPS and Precision, but they cost. I will avoid any 2in1 in general. People end up not using touch functionality anyway. Hp and Lenovo 2n1 are the worst. In general, ticker the machine more plastics = sturdier

There is literally no other way to fix Lenovo's flawed hinge mounting design. This is the only kind of repair that will actually last, you can spend several hundreds on a new lid and LCD assembly and it will just break again in a few months. Lenovo refuses to even fix this under warranty most of the time because they deem it to be "fall damage" despite their being no evidence of a drop.
