    So I recently got my hands on a Dell E6520 with Win10 Pro... Battery almost dead, it was very dirty, both on the outside and inside, so I took it upon myself to give it some much needed love... So I cracked it open, take the heatsink off to replace the thermal paste, and I am greeted with the following: - A removable CPU (intel i5 2520m) - 500GB SSD - WLAN with 5 Ghz - 4G phone modem - An unused mSATA connector I already replaced the CPU with a i7 2670qm and am very pleased with how much cooler the laptop is/how quicker it is. The next things on my list are to upgrade the RAM to 16GB, get the HDD socket adapter for the second drive, get a USB 3.0 Express card expansion and get a mSATA mini SSD for a secondary system with scan software for my car. Not to mention how the build quality is top notch on these enterprise-level machines.

    I ended up upgrading to the i7-2860QM for my t520. Can sometimes run a little hot but not too bad, overall works great. Pretty sure the board would have supported the mobile "extreme edition," or whatever they're called, but they were quite a bit more expensive and draw like 10 or 20 more watts (can't recall for sure); probably would have run very hot. Since the 2860QM appears to be the fastest supported short of the minimally better spec-wise and probably much hotter extreme editions, I would definitely say anything 2860QM or below would be fine for the t520. I made the purchase and received the new CPU within a few days of my original post here and I've had no issues at all since then besides a tad more heat at times, but it was *definitely* worth it. The performance upgrade is quite significant. I also found a custom BIOS from a programmer in australia that provided me with new firmware for small donation that supports up to 16GB RAM (an upgrade I've already made) and removes all hardware whitelists so I was able to upgrade the wifi/bluetooth card to whatever kind I wanted as well. This t520 is still fantastic for how old it is with these upgrades, I use it a lot more than I use my several other, newer, laptops. Let me know if you want me to find the contact info for the guy that made my custom BIOS, he emailed me recently to let me know he's released a new version but I havent gotten around to trying it yet since the previous version has served me well.

    @schwanzlutscher It's all about supply and demand. I was able to find somebody who was willing to take offers, and I offered a lower price, and he(she, ze, they) accepted it. Honestly I don't think the speed difference between the two will be very big, its only 200mhz. The jump in performance from 2 cores to 4 is the bigger game changer. So I would go with any 4 core processor you can afford that is on that compatibility list.

    4 жыл бұрын

    www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html "Upgrade Chance" is a probability of a successful processor upgrade/downgrade from the Core i5-2520M (PGA) (original CPU) to a specific model. This number is calculated as a percentage of all motherboards, compatible with both original and upgrade CPUs, compared to the number of motherboards, that support the original Intel i5-2520M (PGA). The number "100%" means that all motherboards, that work with the original model, also work with the upgrade CPU. The number "0%" means that none of the boards, that support the original CPU, will support the upgrade processor. The manufacturers do not always test or publish results for obscure and unreleased models, and in some cases for OEM only processors, as a result they tend to have much lower scores than more common desktop/mobile counterparts.

    Maybe? www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html That is going from a 35 to 55 watt cpu, I think, if it works, you will struggle to keep it cool.

    Hello, my computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad T510 with an Intel Core i7 CPU M 620 @2.7Ghz. For some reason, it's slow as dog sh** :( I have a Lenovo V570 whose i5 2450 is much much faster at 2.50ghz? What processor should I get for my Lenovo Thinkpad, and how do I find one that is compatible?

  • @AICvideo

    @AICvideo

    4 жыл бұрын

    This is what I use to check for compatibility: www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i7_Mobile/i7-620M_(PGA988).html You have one of the fastest cpu's of that generation there is no point in going faster. there is a decent performance difference between first and 2nd gen core i processors, but their system boards are not compatible. but two other questions, How much ram are you running, and do you have a hard drive or an SSD installed? That makes a HUGE difference. if you have less than 8 gigs of ram, UPGRADE to at least 8 gigs preferably 16, and if you are running a hard drive, upgrade that as well.

    AICvideo Wow that was fast! Well, I can only find one ram card slot, but I haven’t cracked it open yet. I’m assuming there’s another one somewhere, because that slot was empty when I bought it, I installed 1 4Gb ram card in that slot, but less than 8gb is actually available. I have a SSD Drive from seagate, with 250Gb.

    One is under the keyboard IIRC. Yeah, you'll have less than 8 for shared video memory, and just how it calculate show much ram you have. so you do have 8 gigs installed? Have you just looked at your system performance to see what it is doing?

    You have to flash the bios with coreboot, and there is a high chance of bricking your system. IMO, it is not worth it. There is not a huge performance increase between 2nd and 3rd gen processors. And going to a 45w chip from a 35w chip, unless you get the bigger cooler meant for a t420 with dedicated graphics, your going to struggle keeping the heat in check.

It is not the nvidia motherboard version with the better cooling, just the integrated graphics version. I know the cooler from the nvidia version is better and fits and drops the Temps by about 10 degrees so I might try that. It also idles at 40 but gets to 50 if i have a browser with a couple tabs and a few terminals running, or 80-90 with a windows vm

    I don't know where you're looking but its faster in single threaded applications, It has twice the core count so it crushes multithreaded applications, and it has faster integrated graphics. The only downside is it consumes more electricity, so shorter battery life when you're pushing it.

    There is a very good chance. but there are two things going against you, Bios compatibility, and heat. Some systems simply cannot handle the extra heat, and some systems simply were never patched in a way to support the higher core chips. that being said, its a pretty high chance it would work, and if it doesn't, you can resell the chip and just be out a few bucks in ebay/paypal fees. but I have never owned, much less upgraded that specific laptop, so I cannot say for sure either way.

    www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html I don't know for sure, because I haven't done it myself. A couple of things, the 2520m is a 35watt cpu, the 2860qm is a 45 watt. I had the dedicated graphics card which comes with a much beefier cooler, if you do not have that, i would look into upgrading the cooler to handle the additional heat.
