The "?" on the back is an bay for whatever plug you want. I've owned 3 T420's, and each one was different: one was 4 pin 1394 (firewire) plug, another was an extra ethernet plug, and the third was blank like yours.

Great overall review, would definitely try cutting out some of the "uhhhh" moments and would try speeding things up a bit. But loved the review overall

Dont listen to the haters, love your input on these laptops. Valuable time saving information. liked your background on the last vid as well was not "gay".

Hello friend. Thanks for making this video. When running AIDA your processor did momentarily hit the tjunction at 100c. That's why the green bar in AIDA that represents throttling has a couple of "bumps" in the graph. Your temperature software didn't show 100c because it is programmed to refresh its values every couple of seconds. Also the word you were looking for instead of exhaust port was probably ventilation port. Other than that nice video .

Sorry i was playing with my T420 so i didnt watch the full video =*)

Mine is good except for the internal WiFi card (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000) which I've had some problems with. But it seems to work fine under the latest Linux kernel (5.8.13) I have 2x8 Gb of RAM and the i2670QM too. No SSD, but a 500Gb/7200RPM Travelstar from Hitachi works pretty well. For me, the CPU upgrade definitely was worth it. I can recommend this laptop. Very easy to work with, and after you've typed on a ThinPad keyboard, everything else feels cheap. My screen is only 1600x900 and have only a Nvidia NVS 4200M card, so it's not used for much gaming. But for everythign else it's pretty being 10 years old in Feb 2021. What do I miss? USB 3.0 or better. I think I'm going to get an adapter PCMCIA-USB3. That should fix it.

I upgraded to windows 10, the Bluetooth led (the middle one of the three led on the lower right of the screen) blinks before tho I didn't use it, now it wont blink anymore and there is no Bluetooth on the settings anymore. How can I reinstall it?

download the drivers from official website pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t420/downloads if installing doesn't work, try force installing the driver!

The air intake is on the bottom and both vents on the sides are exhaust. The square on the back you refer to is for an optional 56k modem or IEEE 1394 mini port.

ThinkPad, always ThinkPad, I have two, X230 and T420 and they really are my best laptop buy, all day working 12+ hours as a desktop, never a hang, not a reboot. I expanded it to 16Gb and soon I will change the T420 to I7, unfortunately the X230 cannot be done, it is with a soldered processor.

I still have my T420 today and it's my workhorse laptop. I've used it for everything from web browsing to video editing and it's never let me down once! Plus it's so easy to upgrade the drives and memory.

Alex.. have you considered attempting 16GB upgrade? I personally have a good history of exceeding published RAM specs.. I have had 256GB on my ASUS X99 Board, and 48GB on my ASUS x58 Board (both are well beyond published max ram).. Back to the Thinkpad T420.. I have a friend / customer who has a 4177-CTO (T420 Built to Order).. I'm going to take a shot on the CT2KIT102464BF160B kit from Crucial for them.. its dual voltage and certainly fast enough.. There is another seller on Amazon selling a 16GB kit which is claimed to work.. (A-Tech T420 16GB Kit) I'm taking a chance ordering it for them but if it doesnt work out I'll just shelf the kit for another use and order a 8GB kit. Also installing Samsung 850 Pro + Replacing Touchpad Surface (New sticker.)

It should (it will) .. Max Memory is a myth. its really number of memory channels multiplied by total logical ranks per memory channel divided by the number of ranks per memory module. (And having the right speed, voltage and type of ram,, obviously) If 64GB Non-ECC DDR4 actually existed (16GB is the largest Non-ECC DDR4 at the moment). I see nothing stopping you from having 512GB on a i7 chip that states it only supports up to 64GB according to Intel. Haswell-E's Max RAM considered 8GB DIMM x 8 SLOTS would be max density possible without ECC, and since the memory controller on the haswell-e processor can't support anything w/ ECC they said 64GB was max... but wait, now Broadwell-E supports 128GB max ram according to intel.. but Broadwell-E is just a code name for the the 14nm version of 22nm Haswell-E its the same micro-architecture and same memory controller.. What gives Intel!?... anyway.. regarding the "It will" in the first sentence. odds are improving by the minute.. I just stumbled on this after my post above.. Same exact kit confirmed.. forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=800822#p800822 (I'll still confirm if (when) it actually DOES work.. and send some screenies if you like.. or post a vid.)

So the 16GB of RAM is installed and working perfectly.. Its kinda funny, it appears like it only detected 6384 MB RAM on the post screen but its So obvious to me what is REALLY happening here... the #1 in 16384 is just a little bit shy so its hiding over to the left in the screen bezel... the Windows memory test has run pass after pass, no issues. imgur.com/a/JX8JB

So you have a problem with the audio jack, but what about the integrated microphone on the laptop itself? Because if everything works fine with integrated microphone then something is wrong with the audio jack or the motherboard.

+Fatal1tyKill I think it's only a driver issue because i'm currently using the hd audio windows driver (the standard one from windows) and i've got no problem with the microphone (decent quality and volume) and the jack works (headphone ok, headphone+microphone not working). When i was using conexant drivers the microphone was unasable (it had a broken volume, absurdly low). I've read on internet a lot of people complaing about it and a lot of similar problem with conexant audio software. What drivers do you use? :)

There are two things I really dislike about this laptop - the truly horrible feel of the touchpad which is way inferior to previous ThinkPad, and the tiny, fiddly and obscurely placed wi-fi switch. Apart from those gripes it is a good machine.

Watch out for Intel HD graphics because those are usually integrated and can not be replaced. Othervise HDD/SDD, RAM and others like ROMs are easily replaceable

i am getting this because i wanna see if I am a TRUE gamer I love gaming and I normally play on my mums monitors IK this isnt the best but at least its built for gaming and Im exited. Of course im not gonna play without a keyboard and mouse so im getting a gaming keyboard and a Razor Lancehead mouse! no offense but this review sucked

I don't get why you think a business orientated laptop is "built for gaming"

Huh? I get 10-25 fps in low with my t420. Oh well.
