    Good review mate, thanks. I'm contemplating to get this model as a secondary laptop. Lenovo does make top-of-the-line laptop. I'm currently using 10th gen i7 32gb X1 Carbon. It is the lightest, coolest, fastest, most stable laptop with around 18 hrs battery life with heavy usage (4-5 resource intensive apps running 24x7). And I never manually restart my laptop since the day I received it. Best business laptop I ever used.

    Thank you very much for this comprehensive test. I'm glad I waited for the AMD model. It is wonderfully quiet and a real endurance runner in everyday use. Compared to its predecessor, the Zenbook AMD, the battery lasts forever. I no longer have to carry a charger with me ;)

    I really love amd's phoenix apus! In addition to the best igpu around 780M in them, they also have an AI accelerator included but unfortunately I've never actually seen a test or something on what those FPGA chips can actually do and how well. I wonder have you heard of anything in that regard?

    I have the same laptop at a very similar config, with a 1TB NVME. The screen on in this config is still very good at 100% SRGB, way more than anyone would need for a portable workstation. The upgradable 2.8K screen is really overkill for a 14" workstation.

    I just upgraded from EliteBook 5850U to EliteBook 835 G10 7840U with 32GB and Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, came out about USD1,650 with 5G/LTE, and it is nice, everything working out of box on Linux (Opensuse Tumbleweed); just wish it had 60-70Wh battery. I was looking into X13 or T14s as comeback to ThinkPad but went with EliteBook - availability, price and more silent operation.

    I have the t15g gen2, it's a monster, I love it but I have had some reliability issues. USB-C (thunderbolt) to displayport is pretty crap and my monitors (2x 2k Dell monitors) flicker on and off sometimes. Maybe I need better cables. Also I get bluescreens occasionally, found reliability improved a bit with Windows 10 vs Win 11. Also the battery life is about 2 hours 😆, just about long enough to watch a film then it needs to be charged, might try undervolting the CPU/GPU.

    hey man, any opinion on this one's 16 inch version and if these laptops are good options for programmers who run web server + code editors among lots of apps in the background like browsers with many tabs, or would you recommend a more consumer laptop for personal use, like the lenovo exclusive Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 AMD with an exclusive 7840S that sits between the U and HS chips, with excellent build, display, keyboard and amazing speakers? Although that is only available on 14 inch, do you think doing text work on 14 inch 16:10 display is viable? Also, do you know what the differences are between P14/16s and T14/16s? I literally saw no difference besides more fan noise on the P series. Are they allowed to run more power and heat?

    The hardware is decent but nothing exceptional, but what irks me about Lenovo laptops is that the CTRL/FN Keys are swapped (can be adjusted in the bios though) and the touchpad tends to be one overly sensitive big mouse button that gets pressed by accident all the time. Soldered on ram or ssd is an absolute no-go criterion though. Framework laptops show how its done right.

    So nice! -- QUESTION -- One thing we don't understand, what "port" is needed to have one cable connect to a docking station which is hooked up to dual monitors, a keyboard and a mouse (which I use at office but want to replicate at home) AND also powers the laptop. Is that called a USB or is it a thunderbolt or what is that port called. Please be specific as I keep getting different answers on Google. Some say USB C. some say USB 3.1 OR 3.0 some call it a thunderport or something. What must I have for a single charging AND docking station hook up - one cable and I am done. So nice and simple. Sorry to be so particular but even at my office people have no idea what it is called.

  • @MashITTech

    it is because they have made it so confusing! laptop has USBC or USB4. USB4 can also use thunderbolt docks and EGPUs so you can pretty much use any thunderbolt dock with 2 displays outputs. USBC is also good but doesn't have enough bandwidth for two screens. I personally only use 1 screen plus laptop so bought a Dell Ultrasharp 27" 4k monitor with USBC hub built in which includes 90w PD, 4 USBA, 1 extra USBC and RJ45! Now all I have on my desk is the monitor with keyboard and mouse plugged into it. Then it is just one cable to my laptop and I am up and running

    CPU is by far the fastest aging component... Future-proofing in general is a fool's errand. You get maybe 10% longer life but pay twice for the device. We just have to hope that future Lenovo's don't lose much more in terms of build quality!

  • @Farkeman

    @Farkeman

    @@todorkolev7565 I disagree with you on CPU. It doesn't matter as much as people think it does. You can easily still work with 4-5 year old CPU though good luck getting anything done at 8GB or even 16GB (without swap or zram) these days. Desktop applications grow in RAM much faster than in CPU use. Most of CPU bound tasks that aren't video games bottleneck at software level not hardware too.

    Finally ordered the T14s and X13 (at the same time, one to keep, one to ship back). Display lottery was better in the T14s so I kept that, but also because the X13 is louder than the T14s and is missing a few keys. The X13 made some weird design choices, like they could've kept the same keyboard size as the T14s by just moving the loudspeakers elsewhere, now there is, for example, no INS key any more. I don't like how both keyboards feel. Laptop-wise I'm used to a X230 keyboard which is so much better in comparison. However, I got used to it after a couple of days and while I'll never love the keyboard, I'm almost as fast typing on there as with the much older X230 by now. As a business user/sysadmin I'd prefer they wouldn't make laptops thinner to the detriment of something they call a keyboard. I'm all for lighter laptops but I prefer function over design. Overall the T14s is a relatively good compromise if it has to be a Thinkpad; it's lighter than my X230 but still has 2 inches more screen surface (and more CPU/GPU power obviously). I'm happy with my purchase *but* it's not that clear a winner and there are other/better options out there from other manufacturers depending on what you're looking for. That being said, all other manufacturers I've heard of are basically putting out the same stuff - but I wanted my pointing stick 🙂

Still for 2023/2024 I think the t14s is hard to beat if you don’t need discrete gfx though I am looking forward to the new x1 carbon release this year with the intel core ultra processor, they might actually give amd some competition at last

    Oh well you know I thought the Framework 13 AMD seemed like another contender. Found that option after purchasing the two Lenovos unfortunately. On this side of the Channel the Framework is in a similar price range (or less if you choose to DYI it), with the advantage over the T14s that I can do 64GB RAM *and* the RJ45 module is attached to the laptop (while protruding a little). If you liked the old X1 - try the X200/T400 laptops from the late 2000's - that's "sheer typing pleasure" in BMW speak 🙂 Lastly, let's see how long AMD can rest their head on the 780M iGPU, which is *the* selling point of modern AMD laptop CPUs. I even have one in my desktop (Minisforum UM790) and love it. 🙂@@MashITTech

What differences do they have in your opinion? What are your expectations for the new X1 carbon?

    @@MashITTech @bowenx1847 I suggest you take a look at the latest episode from MLID, specifically from ~7mins 10s in. The performance of the upcoming Intel chips are so disappointing that major OEMs are finally saying enough is enough. This is very encouraging news as while the T14/14s is a good effort from Lenovo (Gen 4 sounds good, assuming their USB ports work properly with Gen 4), you get the sense it's still not up to being their premium/tier 1 business standard. So with the disappointing performance from the latest Intel chips (which were already kinda of a bait n switch anyhow as while their performance was strong, they can't hold it long before thermal throttle kicked in), the focus and investment to deliver T1 AMD based laptops from major OEMs should become a reality. Personally, I'll being looking for an AMD based replacement for my X1 Yoga G2...

    Another worthy alternative is the cheaper P14s Gen 4 option which is a bit lower build quality and uses Intel gen 13 + Nvidia RTX A500 set. So if for some reason you need intel/nvidia (not recommended) this is basically the same laptop. Also P14s maxes out ram at 64GB instead of 32GB here.

    @@jakeolandt3041The P14s is almost identical to the T14 non S. In Intel firm it also has options for a low powered NVidia GPU. But in AMD form there is little difference apart from options for 64gb RAM. I have heard some people say the P14s also has a slightly higher power curve than even the T14 but I haven't seen anything to confirm it. So assume your P14s is essentially just a T14, which is a slightly thicker T14s, ethernet port, slightly smaller battery and slightly higher power curve. Do you prefer that or the slight weight and thickness reduction in the T14s?

    One day, about ten years ago, my laptop Thinkpad X220 refused to boot the operating system from the mSATA SSD. At that moment, I was in a hotel in a small city in the far north, and I urgently needed this laptop to perform urgent tasks. In this situation, I simply booted a second operating system that was pre-installed on the second hard drive. Since then, I have believed that a laptop has no right to be called a “business laptop” if it does not have a second drive on which to install a second system. I have the same opinion regarding laptops without a flashlight (the X220 laptop had a flashlight «ThinkLight»), regarding laptops without a trackpoint, and, more recently, laptops without customizable backlighting for each key, laptops with matrices subject to PWM flicker. And unfortunately, not a single modern laptop fits these requirements. I hope that Lenovo will someday release something that meets all these conditions, or ASUS will overtake them if they add a trackpoint to the ASUS ExpertBook B5 Flip IPS.

  • @intellectbuilder

    @intellectbuilder

    In my practice, this was an isolated case, and it was not caused by the operating system. I have no complaints about Windows other than their new Start Menu. I described in my post one example of why having a second drive is important. But people's lives depend on the reliability of some laptops, and for this reason, increased fault tolerance is required from these devices. For many businessmen, it is important that the failure of the ssd during an important business meeting cannot cause its interruption, or cause the loss of at least one minute of work records. Therefore, it is important that information is continuously duplicated onto a second disk for backup. But many modern laptops do not have a second drive, and for some reason manufacturers position them as business laptops.
