Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen2 - Impressions

Ғылым және технология

Bob Pellerin "CTOBOB" unboxes a Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen2 15.6" touchscreen laptop. This new laptop is powered by an Intel i7-1165G7 (11th Gen) CPU offering 4 cores running at a base of 2.8Ghz. Combined with the recommended 16GB of RAM and a 512GB NVMe drive, this laptop offers enough power for heavy business users.
The 15.6-inch screen has a resolution of 1920x1080. Other features a touchscreen, a fingerprint reader, a 720p front-facing camera, and 802.11AC WiFi. You'll also find a USB-C port for charging and for connecting devices as well as a few USB ports, an HDMI port, and a network (GB Ethernet) port. The keyboard is all Lenovo smooth.
The screen swivels all the way back to a near 180 angle for those of you who have requested I mentioned this feature in my previous videos. Overall the laptop is responsive and enjoyable to use.
There are several screens available. Here are the specs for the screens available at the time of this review.
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, 250 nits
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, touchscreen, 300nits

I got this laptop a little over a year ago for school work. I do some very light gaming and use photoshop as well, and it has handled everything wonderfully. I love the trackpad and mouse buttons and the keyboard is excellent, as you say. I got it on sale as well, so I'd say my money was well spent. I will probably get a Thinkpad for my next laptop as well.

Well... that's hard to answer. I'd put a warning... SQL is a resource hog. It's hard to say how well it would perform given I have no idea how you are going to use it. Large datasets? Reads vs writes? Usually I tailor make SQL servers to use the perfect drives for the use we will have. If you do a lot of writes the consumer grade NVMe drive might wear down prematurely.

The processor is nice, and with the 8GB of RAM you do feel like the machine is speedy enough for most day to day office tasks (except if you are a graphic designer, gamer, or a CAD/Maya user, because if you are, stay away from this computer and its lack of a dedicated graphics card). However, it´s insane that, having such a large screen, the screen's PPI is so freaking low. Enough for office tasks, but it's UGLY. And for being a "productivity" machine, the fact that it only has two USB ports and no SD card reader is just not it. There are better machines out there that are more well rounded for a similar price. I just got this machine for work, and while I am grateful for the extra processing speed, I feel like I'm going to have to get used to the screen being so low quality :(

The Thinkpad E's are of poor build quality. They were designed to be the cheapest of the Thinkpad series. The motherboards have just one SO-DIMM slot, the plastic used for the chassis is of poor quality and breaks rather easily. I had both the first gen E15, and now I have gen2, both top specs with core i7 (issued to me at work) so... Not happy... The Gen2 tends to be rather noisy (coil whine). If you want a Thinkpad series with better build quality go for the more expensive ones like the Thinkpad T.
