After owning this laptop for about 2 months let me give you important notes about this laptop: -Charge icon is lit, which is helpful for plugging the laptop in and out at night - For the first week or so there was a noticable wobble on the right but by using the laptop more often that wobble is gone and now my laptop sits perfectly - In quiet mode the machine is still powerful enough to do basically everything I found no real use of performance mode or custom mode - Laptop comes with several display presets for creative work, out of the box it comes in the XRite mode. If you need DCI-P3 or SRGB you can change it in the settings. Everything else is covered perfectly by Jarrod, as usual. I wanted to have a powerful laptop that I could carry around easily and at this age owning a 16 inch gaming laptop or above is a heavy burden especially carrying it around in your bag. It is seriously good I’d highly recommend it!

@@JarrodsTechHello Jarrod, I couldn't find a proper answer for this question so I need your help for this. I'm intrested in the new Lenovo legion pro 5 that comes with a Ryzen 7745HX and a RTX 4060. What is the TGP for this laptop and does it have any limitations ? I also wanted to ask you about the Predator helios 300 with either RTX 3060 or 3070. What do you think is better between the legion and the helios 300. Thank you
Your videos helped me decide on a new gaming laptop. I bought the Lenovo Legion pro 5.
Make sure to compare the g14 and legion slim 5 14. Would be great to hear your consensus on these awesome machines and compared head to head.
I really appreciate that you show us your experience from Linux as well, I have never seen any other reviewer doing it. The things you mentioned like shortcuts track pad etc. seems to be working for many laptops these days, however there are still some areas which it is very hard to predict and that is the battery life. Some laptops are not optimized for Linux and have terribly less battery life compared to same laptop with Windows. Can you also please check battery life on Linux for future reviews?
Review aside, you get so many brownie points from me for the In Flames shirts. Always nice to see a fellow jesterhead
Picked it up for $1050 with 16gb ram and installed my own SSD. 16gb is plenty for 99% of users. I love the quiet mode and it maxes out just about everything I want to play. A huge jump over the 1660ti in my Acer. It is not silent like my MBP 14, but it a great companion. No complaints. Also Lenovo's warranty extension with acciendent forgiveness is a great value for $50 ish dollars.

Very nice! Love to see more laptops manufacturers in the 14 inch space. I’m assuming these have relatively similar chassis sizes to the old 13 inch laptops of a couple years back but now with 16:10 so that’s a big win in my book!
@cameronbosch1213

The problem is the soldered RAM. Sure, it has 32 GB available at the time of purchase, but it does lock you out of anything higher. And let's be real, 14 inch laptops seem to be really competitive this year, unlike larger premium 16/18 inch normal gaming laptops, which seem to be using Intel CPUs only. (Except for the Alienware m16/m18.)
@Ali13445
10 ай бұрын
That is indeed an issue. But they are perfect imo for 4070 and under. I honestly find those big fat laptops just to have a 4060/4070 hilarious as they preform no better than slimmer ones while taking up too much space and weight (and sometimes money).
@cameronbosch1213
10 ай бұрын
@li1343 Oh I'm not saying 14 inch laptops are bad. They just seem to be more competitive than the bigger laptops this year. If this laptop had upgradable RAM or both SSDs could fit dual sided SSDs, I might have bought one, especially given the Framework Laptop 16 doesn't have Nvidia options and I use CUDA for video editing (on Linux, there are no AMD video acceleration options) and DLSS is generally better than FSR.

@@cameronbosch1213Yep! Amd and Nvidia have really let us down this time. I personally bought a tuf a16 with a 7600s because I got it for a steal (800 from 1100) and my old tuf with a 1650 and 3750h was done for. The 8gb vram worried me a bit, but I figured the price was so good, the battery life was incredible and the screen was amazing so I thought it was worth it and bought it. I am goin to keep it for now until the 50 or 8000 series to get a better laptop though.
Hey Jarrod! Great review mate! I bought my last 2 Metabox laptops based on your reviews. Was looking for something more travel friendly. Just purchased this one! Keep up the awesome work mate :)
Thank you so much for this! This will be part of my list because of the portability. I know portability for me will be important because I travel a lot and I'm a small person--this is why the first generation g14 has been my daily driver over the past few years. But I know I love lenovo's keyboards and build quality. The other thing I was thinking of getting was the razer blade 14 (great review there too btw!), but I heard horror stories of Razer support from colleagues. But yeah this will be on my short list when it comes out. Can't wait to try it myself! thanks so much!

cool laptop. thanks for the review :)
I have been using this Lenovo Slim 14 OLED laptop for a few months now, and it continues to impress. The screen is gorgeous. It runs cool and quiet while gaming when using quiet mode, yet with good performance for all modern titles. I don't even miss the lack of GSYNC because the frame rate is high enough in all the games I play to be able to achieve at least 60 FPS. I have not observed any tearing, yet. Highly recommended if you're on the fence.
Seems that memory speed has been the deciding factor of who has the edge with the 4060 GPU onboard. That and most times the small variance in CPU temp with lower clocked units beating out higher clocked yet hotter chips. Thank you for all the fantastic information, Jarrod.
Excellent review, I need a high spec work computer due to heavy files, excel and email accounts and for occasional gaming on 2nd SSD to keep separate windows accounts that can’t access each other. I need something with no RGB and not screaming gaming PC during a business meeting with portability, light weight and “no brick” changer. This almost checks it all. I ordered in 🇨🇭 for 1300 CHF inc tax with same specs. Great value!
I can confirm that in Canada, the starting price is just $1869.99. Once the sale comes up and with a student discount it should be around just $1400CAD, which is pretty good.
I had a dilemma choosing between the ROG G14 for its portability/good screen and the legion 5 for its performance/build quality Now, this is certainly my pick

Jarrod, Great videos. Very thorough. US price in early February 2024 is $1479.99 but is on sale at BB for $1179.99. Your website is of great help in shopping for deals. Thank you for alerting me to the fact that this laptop does not have expandable RAM. I think I may go for a Legion Pro 5i which is on sale at Costco for $1299 (i9, 32GB, 1TB, 4060). Please do more videos on Eluktronics. I had never heard of them prior to seeing them on your website. Found an amazing machine for $1099 but am hesitant as there are so few reviews. Thank you again. You are a great help with my research.
After doing a lot of research that kept me awake for two nights, I decided to buy the Slim 5 14" (Amd 7840HS/ RTX 4060/ 512SSD/ 32GB RAM) laptop. I chose the option of no OS to save some money, but I upgraded the RAM. I ordered it from the Lenovo website and customized it myself. I paid €1537/ $1.674 US dollar, which included an ecoupon discount of €258 and an instant saving of €54. I had it shipped to Ireland. One of the reasons I picked this laptop was that it had lower fan noise and temperature than other brands with similar specs. This means I can play a game in class without attracting too much attention 😂. I also watched some videos that showed that the laptop battery lasted longer with AMD. It also had better performance when not in performance mode. I liked that it had ports on the back but what i didn't like was that the side usb c was not the Thunderbolt 4.0 type C.

Thanks again Jarrod for yet another amazing detailed review of one of my favorite laptop brands. Just something I've noticed is that you've mentioned this model does not light up on the rear i/o ports? I've watched a review from Notebookcheck and the unit they've reviewed had the LED lights on the rear ports. Please can you possibly double check and confirm this for us? Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I suspect Notebookcheck are incorrect. The image on the site mentions it has LED indicators but doesn't show them on. The power is the only one that lights up.
@JarrodsTech: you mentioned that the secondary M.2 slot can take double sided NVMe SSDs. I have a brand new 4TB Kingston KC3000 here and it has 3.5mm thickness, but it comes with a thin cooling sticker-pad on top (like some other 4TB SSDs too). My question now is, would you leave that cooling sticker on or would you (or have to) remove it? ...or better look for another 4TB SSD?.. and which (fast) double sided SSD would work?
Dude!! my favorite lenovo to the time i love it
Jarrod, thank you very much for testing Linux compatibility.
Waiting for Christmas sales. Perhaps a matte screen version will also be available then. Defo time to OLED!
That is probably the best laptop up to date
Thank you for your review and best wishes from Germany 👋🏻 I currently use a Yoga 7 14 with 7735u / 680m convertable in teal color. It is just gorgeous and very performant for its price tag. 😁 But I am looking for a replaceement of my XMG Fusion 15 wich served and still does very well for its GTX 1660ti. This Legion 5 is an interesting option. Maybe I get an 7 slim instead 🤔 And now there are completely new techs on the horizon - like the 50th gen and the new CPUs ... 💁♂
So I was on the hunt for a gaming laptop about a month or two ago… Lenovo has been around for a long time but I was leaning towards a Asus or MSI. I stumbled upon the Lenovo LOQ 16, which I believe you did a review on the 15 version. It has the exact same specs as this, a 7840hs and RTX 4060. It did have an extra NVME slot that I popped a 2TB in, came with a 1 TB. It also unlike this one had two SODIMM slots so I switched the ram from 16gb to 32gb. Between the ram and SSD I spent about an extra 200. My laptop retailed at around 1400, but on Lenovos website I caught a sale and a first time buyer discount and got it for 984 before tax. Being larger it gets better temps with a cooling pad I’ve rarely hit 80c, and only hit 80 in the most demanding of circumstances. It is an all plastic build, but to save the money it doesn’t bother me. Best laptop I’ve ever owned and I’ll probably go Lenovo next time, was a great experience all around.

Great video as usual. I was looking at the Legion Slim 5 and have owned Legion laptops in the past. I just purchased the 2023 G14 with the 4060 at BestBuy for $1,099 and couldn't pass it up for that price. So far, I've been extremely happy with it and not had thermal issues at all with great performance. I'm not sure if the BIOS update it had shortly after I set it up helped or not? Thanks again! 👍
Great review as usual, Jarrod! It's unfortunate - I can't find the model with 32G anywhere
Your videos are amazing, but there's one small correction: you should not represent "infinite" contrast as 1:1; that's not how it works. When you write, for example, 1000:1, you are talking about the contrast ratio, which means that whites are 1000 times brighter than blacks. If you write 1:1, it implies that whites have the same brightness as blacks, which doesn't make any sense. The contrast ratio for OLEDs would be infinite to one, so it may be better to just write "infinite contrast."
Lenovo make some really good laptops 😊😊
Looking forward to the 50-series laptops next year. Going to step up from my 4080 laptop to a 5080 or 5090 one
Oled is amazing, i have one for my pc and my next laptop will have to have one too.

....Bought the Framework 16. "Never buying another laptop again after this." Shit, this is tempting. Very tempting.
When measuring screen brightness for an HDR screen you should use a 10%ish window instead of full field. I measured this laptop hitting 740 nits at a 10% window which is similar to an lg c1, fairly impressive. Oled struggles in full field and full field kind of doesn't matter anyway so it's a little weird to see a 400 nit being reported. Games don't just have white at max luminance.
Nice review as usual. Will you do this year ASUS ROG Flow X16 review 😄

Hi Jarrod, i plan on buying this laptop cause it has all the features that i want. Really want to know your opinion and experience about Oled screen on laptop. Do they get burn in easily? Should i worry about burn in?
This laptop has been the best decision I have ever made. It's really quiet and efficient for a 14". It literally holds everything you can think of, and even has a full on sd slot! Not that anyone really needs it, but it also runs so cool when casually doing non-intensive things. The OLED display is probably the best thing about this laptop and even though the speakers are not as good as the G14, it's definitely better than the other lower end speakers on the Slim 5 16" model! I personally think it does an amazing job on mids and highs, but lacks bass. Nothing a bluetooth headset can't fix though. I love the slightly beefier body over the G14. I don't feel any heat on standby, and with the G14 it would idle at 54c which was too warm for my taste. You should definitely give this bad boy a try!! I love mine and ended up opting for a Ryzen 7, 32gb ram model since the ram was soldered... which is the only Con I can give to this laptop lol...

Have you done any native resolution gaming on it?

It doesn't have upgradeable RAM, doesn't have ethernet port. OLED display looks nice, but its response rate is useless when you are forced to play on wifi connection
@JarrodsTech - do you know the reason why the Ryzen 9 only allows 16gb ram compared to the Ryzen 7 that allows 32gb?
I like the new trend with these bigger screen
This looks like pretty good laptop, second SSd for linux and can be both work and play as the battery life seems good too + in Linux can be easier tweaked ...
It‘s great you tested Linux compatibility for this laptop.
One of the best laptop reviewers out there. thanks for such amazing content Jarrod 🙂
Hi @JarrodsTech, does this laptop have USB 4 or Thunderbolt 4 in any configurations? Does any Legion have those ports?
DearJarrod! Which slim 5 is better between 14' and 16' , if same price! Plz recommend for me~
Hi Jarrod. Great review as always. Thank you. I just received one myself. Legion Slim 5 Gen 8 AMD 14" RTX 4060 32gig 1tb. I find I have a whistling fan noise at low RPM's kind of like a small baby jet engine. Did you find that was the case with your review laptop. Thank you.
I can't sacrifice Thunderbolt4 port. Lenovo should think about it again
So it doesn't have USB 4? And does this OLED panel suffer from PWM flickering like other OLED laptops?
