tuah cool there is usually a small fan to pull heat off the cpu and help pull air through the system to keep it from overheating. Generally these small form factor systems have pretty much a laptop board and components. As you just witnessed. Those looked to be DDR3 modules, so probably DDR3-1600 speed, but more commonly was 1333.
