Today, we have a pretty special unboxing to do with the brand-new Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5. This device was made official back in September, but just arrived in retail locations in mid-October. Lenovo was nice enough to send one over and, as we do around here, we opened it up all on camera. There are times when we have to open a box pre-video to check on a few things before commuting to making a video, but this wasn't' one of those times. Instead, this unboxing is completely un-prepped and unfiltered. Let's dive it!

I absolutely loved the original duet. As Chromebooks have access to the Android Play Store, I feel like Lenovo created the perfect 2in1 as all android apps are meant for phones and tablets. Looking forward to getting my hands on one of these.

@Brent S : Android tablets and Chromebook can not support the same software as an Android smartphone do to firmware. Android tablets mostly support Google and Microsoft apps and third party Android devs have to add compatibility for tablets. Your best option is to use Android emulator via Linux on Chromebook.

Pretty much: Can it stream and download 1080p playback in Netflix, VUDU, Prime Video etc. From the Netflix app, dig in settings and playback configuration, and it will straight up tell you "Maximum supported resolution" and if its 480p, womp womp. Hoping Qualcomm chip improves compatibility.

The big question is whether it has enough 'go' to manage day-to-day office duties, which the original Duet didn't have. If you could use this as a work PC it would work well as attached to a flexible arm mounting, and linked to a Bluetooth desktop set so it could be used as a SOHO pc in a small space. If you could mount it in portrait format it would be great for word processing, or it would work as a separate screen. A lot of 'ifs'....

So for me it was no brainer to take it and i'm completly satisfied with the performance. Like you said in the tests before the sound output is a bit of a weak point, but it works like a charm and i love this keyboard, which was a real issue to me with my first Lenovo Duet. I still use my duet as a tablet in bed for reading etc. but for my daily mail and office work on the go , i feel more comfortable with the thinkpad. But anyway the 13" oled display sounds great for use it for media on the couch or playing games via a streaming service. My usage is 70% work and just 30% media & games, which makes me to decide for a laptop styled system.

That flickers... That's too yellow... That would randomly go black on me for a sec then pop back on... I'm hoping I just got a dud. It's on hold now work Lenovo "waiting on parts". We'll see when they return it to me. I was very disappointed. I also own the smaller Duet and this one was going to replace it. Glad I didn't sell my smaller one yet. When you sit them side by side, the screens are like night and day. The screen on the smaller Duet is bright white clear and beautiful. The duet 5 looks yellow and worn to me in comparison. Very lightweight... Beautiful tablet but it feel rushed.

Something worth mentioning: we've had a Duet for about a year and a half, and the ribbon connector for the keyboard has begun to fail, causing the unit to abruptly switch between the keyboard and tablet mode, resizing windows and tabs unexpectedly. That ribbon seems fairly flimsy. Other users have reported the same, but unfortunately, I can't find a replacement keyboard. I wonder whether (but doubt) Lenovo has improved the robustness of the ribbon connector. Any thoughts on this, @chromeunboxed ?

The keyboard on mine went wonky too (though not the ribbon connector). Getting a replacement is way more of a hassle than it should be. I did end up finding one online for $40, but it took well over a month to ship. The Duet itself is a great cheap device (if not exactly a barn-burner in terms of performance), but there should be better support from Lenovo in respect to getting replacement parts.

The speakers are absolutely unacceptable even for a listening to a news broadcast on the kitchen table if you have the microwave on you can't even make out what they're saying and that's at full volume which is really just a tinny whisper. Bluetooth speaker and or Bluetooth earbuds are absolute must 100% of the time for this device it's sad. The speakers are approximately 30% of the volume of my Samsung Galaxy S7 Plus and not as clear without bass.

Seriously though, this device's most direct competitor is the HP X2 11. It's an 11" screen like you're looking for. IIRC it's also 1440p so super clear viewing. Also is a 3:2 aspect ratio so a little wider in portrait mode.

@DS That's true. And they are incredible devices. But like Joel mentioned above those are too big for tablet mode. Which is why the larger/premium versions are used with a keyboard and stand to use in landscape mode.

The best detachable keyboard method I've ever seen is the Google Pixel C from 2015. It attached with magnets but had hinge so you could use it on your laptop which these detachable struggle to do well, and pickup and move without it flopping. Someone should do the same with a 13" type size Chromebook. Typed on a Huawei Mediapad M5 10.8 which has the same keyboard concept of this duet and it's awkward on other than a flat surface.

  • @DiwaGalvez

What I would want is a 10.5" version of this, but using an LCD instead of an OLED to keep the price down. Then, since it's LCD, make the eMMC a UFS 2.1. Keep the 8GB RAM and the SD 7c Gen 2. I want it to only be marginally bigger but at 3:2 aspect, or at least 16:10 aspect compared to the original Duet.

  • @DiwaGalvez

    @DiwaGalvez

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Eli-si4zf No. The HP x2 11 has a 2K screen. It bogs down the processor and eats up battery life. The one that I'm proposing uses an OLED but still at 1080p. Also, the HP still uses an eMMC. The UFS, even 2.1 (3.1 will add to cost), is already fast enough for the target price.

@@diuran1919 That makes sense. With the lack of horsepower, this isn't really suited for work. I just want the 16:10 ratio for at least better viewing of emails or reading when I need to. But I get your valid point.

This thing would FLYYY off shelves if they add a port that allows you to also use it as an external portable monitor! It's a shame that we can't get more use out of that 13" OLED screen. Furthermore, in 5 years time when this hits end-of-life, it'll still have utility as a monitor. If they released a MK2 version with that function, I'd gladly pay an additional $100 just for that feature; because I can toss it into the same bag as my Windows laptop, and I'll be a HAPPY traveler.

I still haven't found a new Chromebook that could compel me to upgrade from the Pixel Slate... I thought this might be the one... maybe if it had a 3:2 aspect ratio. At this point, I only wish I would have gotten the Pixel Slate with 16Gb/256Gb; 64gb is not enough space for me to really unlock the potential of what I could do on the device.

My Pixel Slate i5 8 gigs have really spoiled me! I have been watching every Chrome Unboxed video that I can in order to see if anything out there can match up with what I love about the slate. So far nothing combines the build, sound, and aspect ratio of the Slate. So come on Google. Time for updated Slate to appear. Even the Pixel Go is starting to get a bit "dated"!
