Lemon Drums 16" Cymbal Review (3 Zones)

Музыка

Today I'm reviewing a crash/ride cymbal made by the company Lemon Drums. People say it's a premium level cymbal that is also very inexpensive. So I put it to the test in this video to see if it lives up to that claim.

I have 5 of these, 4 as crashes one as a ride, all of them had the bell/edge reversed for a ride, however it is a very easy fix, if you pop the cover off the bottom of them there is a simple little white 2 pin plug coming from the piezo that just needs to be swapped to the opposite socket. They are a great cheap alternative to the name brand units.

I have two of these cymbals and they work well. There are a lot of videos that talk about the triggering issue and how to fix it (internal cabling issue). I didn't have any issues, I just plugged them in and they worked. I am only using these cymbals as two zone crash and so far they seem to work just as well as the Roland cymbals I own. So far I am happy with them, we shall see how long they last over time.

I have several Lemon cymbals/rides that work as they should. And, important, the bell zone trigger good. Far better than the CY-13R where it is more like hit and miss... I ended up selling all my Roland cymbals, repacing them with Lemon cymbals all around (I have 3 kits).

Just to give out my words on the negative sides of this, I and Justin actually talked if I would give him another cymbal. I believe the cymbal was routed correctly and it was with compatibility with “Higher” Flagship line models. It also happens with the Pearl Mimic (I wonder if it also is the issue with a TD50) I also asked Justin if he had like a TD17 lying around just to see if it was just because of a compatibility issue. Unfornuately, he has none. So we just preceeded and I asked him to give his honest feed back on the cymbal. Again, i think the cymbal is properly routed and also the module. I believe it is a compatibility issue with the TD30, Pearl minic (and others if there are) Thanks again!

Wiring issue aside (like someone mentioned, probably pre configured for Alesis) they look like decent and well priced for anyone after another cymbal but doesn't want to pay Roland prices new or second hand. The only question is how long will they hold out. Only time will tell but sure, they look decent. The underside looks very Alesis... so I am wondering of they're actually rebranded Medelli or something.

So, if I were replacing 2 cy8's that stopped edge sensing at the same time on my TD17 kv, I should, barring major anomalies, be alright? My Cy's are....oh.... 13 months old. Yeah.... And are messing up, and that's kinda because I'm a pretty hard hitter. What do you te about the overall construction for a hard player? Hopefully it'll work out better than my strike ride did. That pos made it about 2 weeks. Bought off of eBay as brand new, and possibly was, but it had the dreaded bell bye bye disease, and I just didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of trying to get it replaced, and went back to the layered bow zone bell, and have a nice day. I would consider all 3 cymbals be replaced with these, since they're cheap, but at the same time, jobecky is also cheap, but seems to be maybe a safer bet. Recommends on me using these as crashes and/or ride, and on jobecky in general?

So I am going to talk about the Lemon 16 inch triple zone cymbal I received yesterday. My 1st impression upon holding it was it seemed lighter and thinner Then the Roland cy-13 I am used to. This I liked. Also no imperfections or damage so the product is clean, and manufactured well. Upon putting it up and plugging it in, I was excited to have this 16 inch cymbals footprint take up the real-estate the cy-13 did not. All 3 zones are as, if not more responsive than the cy-13. Feel is also similar. A noticeable upgrade on the Lemon cymbal is the bigger bell surface. Very comfortable to play and very expressive. Triggering is accurate and dynamics are there. If there's one improvement to be made, it would be the cymbal choke. I wasn't able to get a solid stop in cymbal sound when choking the edge, but it does choke, just not as sharp. Beyond that I am super satisfied with this cymbal. I am also a fan of the price. Considering the ATV 16 inch goes for 500 plus dollars. Sometimes, we take chances with our purchasing power. I was ready to be underwhelmed or disappointed. I am pleased to say the gamble paid off. This is a great cymbal, and a tremendous deal. I was able to purchase this from one of our members Gabby, for 118.00 plus 70.00 shipping . Anyone who is interested in bigger cymbals and lower cost ,while getting top performance needs to check out this Lemon 16 inch triple zone cymbal for sure !.

Hi Justin, it's from my DYI eDrum custom kit. There are different wiring schematics (as most know). However, it may be wired to Alesis' specs. Or the polarities on the switches are reversed. Sure there is a 50/50 chance while wiring. Yet the complexity doubles with three (Roland - Alesis wiring possibilities. Excluding Yamaha etc). Thanks again for supporting our drumming passion. Yes, the way the modules detect the bell switch from the edge switch is that one closes direct to ground and the other closes to ground through a 10k resistor. Alesis and Roland conventions have that resistor swapped.

@@matenorth That is right. No resistors in Roland. Both the edge and the bell are Choke sensors. If one of them closes at the same time of the piezo trigger then it sends the corresponding zone. If none of the Bell or Edge gets closed then it detects the bow

@@edrumsense Interesting. I don't know anything about their new products like the digital ride, etc, but in the original Roland Vdrum patents, timing doesn't enter into the bell/bow/edge note selection equation. The only timing mentioned in the patents was for pads with positional sensing (no switches involved). There are three channels on a TRS jack. The output jack's tip transmits the piezo's vibration to the module, and the the ground (sleeve) channel completes the circuit, leaving the ring as either open or grounded within a window of time that is either inside or outside of the piezo's exitation exceeding the threshold required to trigger a NoteOn event. If it's just barely inside that time window, then it registers this as a strike on either the bell or edge zones and produces the corresponding MIDI note; if it comes later, it means a choke of that note has been performed, and this is communicated to the synth engine through poly aftertouch. This scheme can also produce a dampened note if the switch is pressed during the strike, though I'm not aware if Roland even recognizes this (other modern brains do, such as Megadrum). Thinking about this, I can see how Roland pads, with their dual output jacks, could clearly differentiate a bell hit vs. an edge hit, but this would be due to there being two discrete 'ring' conductors, one for bell and the other for bow. Again though, this has nothing to do with timing, and I can say that Megadrum has two cymbal triggering modes, one for Alesis and the other for Roland-style pads. Before this was implemented, if you had a reversal of expected zones, you needed to swap a resistor from one switch to another and it would work as intended. It could be the case that in the Roland's input circuitry, a 10k resistor from a closed switch to ground will increase the time-to-threshold for the switch to register as 'closed', but still be quick enough not to be mistaken for a 'choke', but then that makes Roland's dual jack design seem even more curious.

@@DrMackSplackem Outstanding answer. Thank you for you addition to my comment. What a great community, everyone is chill. I also wish I could highlight your comment. I even learned something from you, ✌. I've put together some of my own DYI cymbals with the Myrk switches and piezos. And reversed engineered what Roland/Hart Dynamics did with theirs. However, it's always been in the back of my mind that I hadn't gone deep enough, suspected that I was missing something that hadn't given me issues as of yet. Have you dug around with a Oscilloscope? Curious. In closing, the digital is nice yet it really becomes a proprietary components with little room for customization. 😀✌ peace

Definitely considering buying one of these, will contact the email on screen for hooking up 65 drums Justin with the gear for a honest review. I already have a CY-15R this would be a nice size crash cymbals for my kit, my CY-12 is looking too small for my kit now
