Lemon Button Fern || Fern Friday
The Lemon Button Fern properly known as, Nephrolepsis codifolia 'Duffii' has many names including the Duffy fern and Fishbone fern. These ferns being a Nephrolepsis are related to the very common and easy to grow houseplants, the Boston Fern and the Kimberly Queen Fern. Just like their large relatives, the Lemon Button Fern makes an excellent houseplant fern. They are a great fern to grow as a houseplant because they stay small and are forgiving with watering and humidity. I really think these are easy to grow ferns and overall a fairly easy houseplant for low light. The lemon button ferns small size makes them excellent plants for terrariums, which is why I went ahead and tossed on of my ferns into a large bowl terrarium. If you have a bio-active terrarium I would give this a try since it is so lush and is safe ( non-toxic ) to animals, making it pair well with reptiles and amphibian terrariums.
These ferns not only make great houseplants but they are down to zone 8 which makes them a great fern for the garden in warmer climates with cool winters. These would be beautiful and easy plants to tuck into shady patches in the garden or even as a foreground plant where it will receive dappled light. I love #fernfridays!

Pillow moss would actually work great in that over rocks in a few spots. I use it in my some of my house pots and helps the keep things nice, and nice looking
Thanks for all the tips! I didn't have all of the terrarium supplies and didn't want to commit to one. So I placed my Lemon Button Fern inside a large fish bowl with pebbles and a little water on the bottom that the potted plant sits on. It's been a few weeks, and so far so good.

I think your terrarium turned out beautifully. Simple elegance.

I'm also like in go mode at this time 🤣🤣 you are my kind of friend.
I bought my first Lemon Button at my nursery in the spring. I fell in total love with that fern and now have 6 of them. It's 107 degrees today in Tx with the humidity, those ferns looks fake, unlike maidenhair ferns where you have to babysit them constantly. These are beautiful . They look so delicate, yet the fronds are sturdy as can be. It's become my favorite fern of all my ferns just because it's always perfect looking, graceful and adds texture to a planter . I used in one planter a base of Tiger's Eye medium size stones, and it looks beautiful. I mist all my ferns and they're in semi-shade and all doing excellent. Would I recommend Lemon Button? Yes, most definitely.
Excellent video

Another great video, thanks :) I'm not confident enough to try a fern yet (I live in the desert). But maybe a cute little fishbowl terrarium is just the thing to make it work for me.

Your channel is so positive and informative glad I found it!
Omg! I finally know what kind of fern I used in my closed terrarium! Thanks for shedding light on that because I thought it was a type of Maidenhair. 🙏🏻 It’s my first terrarium, but it’s doing just fine 3 weeks in. My fingers are crossed. I’m also happy to know I selected the right fern for my terrarium because I honestly purchased it blindly!
I love ferns, so I love this series :) Please continue forever! ;)

And thank you for this video I have been trying to keep them and I am on second one and it's not looking good. But I keep soil nice of it, and it has plenty of light and air and the humidity in my apt is on the higher side like no lower than 40%
Oh my goodness, I'm so glad to have found your channel!! I've just recently just discovered my ferns are specifically 'lemon butter ferns', which is quite a cute name, and though they aren't dying, they're the first ferns I own. I'm not sure if the advice I read, my own knowledge, and advice I watched in fern videos were enough, and I came upon your video! Some of my lemon butter foliage in the middle are browning, and also some of the leaves/buttons are also brown. The soil's pretty dry, and I've been keeping it dry because I was too afraid that I might water it to be too damp. Hmm. Looks like I shouldn't be afraid to water it. Hopefully I can know keep them in tip top shape with all the advice and useful information! And I love your humour! I actually got an adiantum raddianum today! So seeing that in the video was a nice surprise. I'll also need to check out that video!

Thank you! Nah, don't be afraid to water it. As long as the soil drains well and doesn't stay sopping wet for a long time then it will be fine. The lemon buttons can go drier than a lot of others though. :)
I’m enjoying fern Fridays.

Love it! It looks simple and great. You could compare the grow of the two ferns- one in the terrarium and one in the pot. Will you cover the terrarium with a lid? Or a glass plate or something?

I like this terrarium, too, and the Lemon Button Fern. May have to try one. I have some of those bowls from when I had Beta's, so now I know what to do with them! Would you lease, if you haven't already, do a video on putting succulents in a bowl like this? I think that's what I'd like to do. TFS!

Yeah, put those old betta bowls to use! I'm hoping to do a succulent terrarium in the next few weeks. ... I don't want to overload everyone with terrarium videos so I'm trying to spread it out.

I don't do well with ferns, the only fern I currently have is the heart fern, so far it's doing great. Thanks for the tips, bye for now.

I'm starting to collect a few easy ferns, and this is one of them. Where would you put this in your home? And do you have a plant tour in your home, to give us ideas of where we could put plants? I'm in Kentucky and a dark house. Not fun. But hopeful.😏

I forgot to talk about that, i'm so sorry. I don't have many plants in my home, i keep them in my garage because y cats chew on the plants and use them as litter boxes in the house... Any room where it will receive a few hours (3-4 hours) of bright and indirect light will be just fine. :)
I vote to ad the unikitty to the terrarium :) looks great though!!
I love this look... very zen. So simple and elegant - it lets the plant to do all the talking so to speak. Love it. I'm thinking if you top dressed with black stone it would really make that green pop. Maybe pop in a tiny Buddha statue? lol Good job, as usual. Love it, love it, love it.

Thank you, Silvie! I did have a jar of black mexican pebbles sitting next to me and was eyeballing them the whole time! I ended up using all the spare space in there to propagate leaf cuttings. I'm short on space so figured I'd make it multi-purpose for now.
I cut the bottom of my Kimberly queens root off after splitting in half. Do you think it has any chance of surviving? You’ve got great fun plant videos. I like when you let us know if it’s safe around pets. I’ve just started trying to grow house plants. Save the fern lol
I have had a lemon button fern for about six months. It is my first fern. Anyways my fern had a baby fern next to it and I decided to separate them in the spring. My baby fern is slowly dlying but now old fern is still doing well. I tried different locations for it
That would be nice with a couple of gnomes or fairy's with a little house.

Isn’t that reptile soul just coco coir? Love your terrariums : )
Could you use just regular soil in the terrarium?
🌿
I have to say I'm a bit surprised that you've done two terrariums and neither one has either a) some kind of shiny top dressing or b) some little fairy garden decor in it. What is next, Japanese Painted Fern (since it grows indoors or out)?

Michael! You know me too well! Lol... I wanted to put crystals in both terrariums but i didn't because I wasn't sure about them maybe leaching lead with all of the moisture and humidity. I love painted ferns! But I'm holding off a few more weeks for the outdoor ferns(where I live) bc mine are all still dormant.
May I asked who discovered "lemon button fern" ? Thank you ☺️
I am so confused I ordered a lemon button fern and it came and it says it can grow 36"!!! Is there different varieties of lemon button ferns?
@TropicalPlantParty
5 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure if there are different varieties but the general consensus online is that they stay smaller.
In the top left hand corner there is a spikey plant almost like a cacti l have been given one for a gift no name HELP !! If you could take the time to tell me what it is I'd be very grateful

You can tell them they need to order a better variety of plants. A lot of the selections depends on their sales and who is in charge of the garden department.
