    🤔 If anyone is curious about what the inspiration behind Lembas bread is, it’s based off of “Hard Tack” which is what Tolkien would’ve had during the war when he was a soldier. It’s basically a bland, very hard cracker made out of just flour and water, then baked at a low temperature to remove moisture content which allowed them to be stored easily and prevented it from going bad. They literally lasted forever. Hard Tack goes back hundreds of years and was a staple food source for the British navy, they were called “ships biscuits”, as well as being used in war.

  • @GobiSubramaniam
    @GobiSubramaniam Жыл бұрын

    The bread the movie refers to is reference to hard bread (or hard tacks) which often used by sailors in 16th century to 18th and then adopted as soldiers' rations during wars in Europe. As a former military personals (in World War - not sure which one, I think the 2nd one), Mr. Tolkien was custom to using the bread as rations during the war and he adopted it as Lembas bread in his movie to explain how others could function for a longtime without stopping to cook and eat.

    It is possible they are a reference to hard tack, but we did not interpret them that way. They are described as "sweet", "cream colored on the inside" and "cakes." Gimli compares them to the honey cakes of the Beornings. So we went with something closer to a graham cracker.

    Not to pick on your recipe, but Lembas bread seems like it would be something similar to hardkeks or Hardtack? Adding butter or shortening to it, you wouldn't be able to keep it for very long, as it would get stale or rancid? I think his idea for the lembas bread was then from when he was in the British Army during World War 1? The term the English used was "biscuit" for crackers/hardtack.

  • @fandomrecipes1195

    @fandomrecipes1195

    Hardtack may be the inspiration, but remember this recipe is handed down from the Valar Yavanna. Tolkien describes them as "cakes" and Gimli compares them to the "honey cakes of the Beornings." With all this in mind, we opted for a recipe that captured the flavor, rather than the staying power.
