I had the camera for about a year but I've never given you my opinion on it or shared the reason why I actually sold it. People asked me about and finally here is a video on why i didn't keep it.

Interesting. “Liked.” Thanks for sharing this. I bought a pre-owned M Type 246 Monochrom, in 2018, after I had fumbled and dropped my still-new M10, from shoulder height. The Monochrom enabled me to “get back onto the horse that had thrown me,” and keep using the M system while my M10 was down, for repair. (Thankfully, my M10 had been wrapped inside a neoprene camera wrap, at the time of the mishap, which had provided some measure of protection.) I agree that the base ISO of 320 is a limitation, when shooting in bright daytime, but, so much of my shooting is in the evenings, and/or while stopped-down, so, this generation of the Monochrom is useful. In 2021, and again in 2022, I seriously considered “upgrading” to the M10 Monochrom, but, each time, decided to remain faithful to my 24MP “team” of M cameras. I did not abandon my DSLR equipment, so, the easy answer, for using lower ISO settings, in bright conditions, is to simply use a DSLR. My post-2022 budget is smaller, due to being fully retired. Rather than dream of more resolution in a digital M camera, I now think more about an MP that shoots 35mm film, though I have some wonderful Nikon SLR lenses, and Nikon 35mm SLRs upon which to use them.

Thank you Martin. 👌 When u use a red filter you will have the same issue. However, it might be less visible when shooting film compared to a higher res digital sensor. Another factor is the aperture. When you shoot at f2 or even faster then the effect becomes more prominent.

From memory you compared the range finder focus after using live view for critical focus. I think that you found that although you were happy with live view focus the range finder focus was out. I guess it could be the focus metering and which part of the live view screen you used. It would be good to know if your zone focus on the lense was suggesting you were ok. So looking for a focus point through the range finder will be in focus for a hyperfocal point.

It was nice BUT not overwhelming.. I wouldn't tie up so much money in one, even newer models. My M3 is good enough. Using red-filters, one needs extra depth of field esp. in Infrared.

I don't have your problems because i don't shoot wide open, f8 is my usual value for streets. I found that M246 works best with high ISO, i use 1600-2000 during daytime, 3200 on cloudy days and afternoons and 6400 after sun sets. That is a personal taste but i like how it renders at 3200-6400. I love the camera and i dont think you can get so rich and live and 3d images from many other cameras out there

Rangefinder focusing has nothing to do with what the lens sees. So if you have a filter, it doesn’t matter! It is a mechanical coupling between lens and rangefinder system. If your focus with live view is different than your rangefinder, then you have to send it for the rangefinder to be adjusted. It has nothing to do with the image output of the lens man.

I think maybe you just didn't like it! From a logical perspective if the lens was focusing visible red vs white light at noticeably different distances then it would have terrible chromatic aberration. You literally couldn't shoot colour with it. If you are using a really really deep red filter then maybe focus would be off just a bit but those wavelengths of light would be out of focus (compared to the range finder and other white light coming through the lens) if you were using a colour sensor and no filter. It is only the de-mosaic raw processor that fudges it to make it appear sharp. In fact I'm not sure the red filters in the Bayer layer would be as red as the three stop red you were using so the effect wouldn't technically be achievable without a filter anyhow - but could probably be approximated in post. If you switch to an M6 with B&W film with the same filter you get all the same issues but probably wouldn't notice because the resolution is much lower unless you are using really slow film in which case you will almost be on a tripod! You did complain about both the base ISO being too high to shoot on sunny days and also that using a 3 stop red filter on sunny days made the ISO too low. It can't be both. Nice pictures though :)

The Leica is a luxury brand. Much the same way an Alfa Romero is a luxury brand. Canon, Nikon, Sony brands are for the everyday person. As much as I'd like to have a Leica, digital or film, the price points are out of what I am comfortable spending. Besides an expensive camera will no make you a better photographer. I'd have to be a much better photographer before I spent any money even on a pre-owned Leica. Nearly all of my photography equipment is either pre-owned or refurbished by Canon. I save ¼ and more on pre-owned and refurbished equipment. The Canon refurbished comes with Canon's standard warranty.

What can you expect from a $7,000 camera body. No low iso. No fast shutter. No metering (ok bad meter). Etc etc. if you only had a smaller budget for a modern camera!:)

Lowest ISO at 320???? As a default?? Really, for 8.000,- €? Ahh, I am so happy with my NIKON D750. I put on a zoom 70 - 300 mm when I do street photography, covers most motifs. Or I walk with a 50 mm lens. Then dial in the MC mode in RAW. And get absolutely fine b/w pics. With the option to check out some in color later. The "only b/w approach" for me seems rather stupid. Just think of Ernst Haas or Saul Leiter.

Hilarious. It’s clear you don’t understand the benefits of a monochrome sensor versus converting, nor the fact that when you remove the bayer sensor from an otherwise color camera with a base ISO of 160 that the monochrome has a higher base due to the increased sensitivity. Enjoy your zoom lens.

@@clawdawg7248 Hilarious... for me are people who really think buying a Leica Monochrom brings them one step closer to being a good photographer. Or is it all about comparing histograms? Don't think so. Btw: what is a "bayer sensor"?

So basically, Leica Monochrome is overpriced garbage?! I can get very very good black and white images from my old Fuji XT1 with the BWr film simulation and a circular polarizer attached.

I own a X-Pro 1 and use it for B&W as well. When I compare X-Pro 1 B&W and compare to my M10D and M240 B&W conversion, I can’t justify what’s the diff between the XPro & Ms. However, when I shoot my M9M DNG + JPEG, I am totally blown away when viewing on LightRoom. I have checked out many videos on KZread and online reviews to determine if I should get it. The initial results that I have collected just doesn’t give me the push to get it. When I tried out the M9M and view the images with my own eyes on its original resolution, I can definitely see the difference from images sharpness and tones. Just sharing my personal opinion.
