Hi Hugo, I am very happy to have chosen the M8 to step into the Leica M series. It is not only an affordable way to get into the leica M system, but I confirm that the camera give beautiful images. I use an IR filter. A few professional photographers are looking down on the M8 because of his smaller sensor. But, in my opinion, it is just the sensor which make him so special ! Hi Roger, is true, I remember when I bought my first M8 (because was the cheaper option to get into the Leica M system) the general opinion was to priece the M9, and look down the M8. I believe them, and after a couple of years I bought a M9. Excellent camera, great experience, using the capabilities of my lenses with the full frame, but also I realize you good is the M8. I have just bought black paint M8.2 and im in love. Amazing soul mate camera. And can found cheap today. ❤️

M8, your first love! That is the one strongest reason to keep out of the two.

Every photographer has to be honest with themself and use the camera they enjoy and trust. For digital, I LOVE my two Nikon D300 bodies with matching Nikkor 20mm f3.5 AIS lenses. Ancient cameras and ancient lenses. Heck, I'm 69 so I'm ancient as well. But although I use Canon Rangefinders (VT Deluxe) , Nikon F and Nikomat SLRs and Fuji and Linhof film cameras, my old digital cameras are exactly right for my travel needs. Are other cameras better? For other people, absolutely. But for me, no. If I had plenty of money, I'd buy a few more D300 bodies. Nothing newer puts a smile on my face like these two Nikons. Photography is wonderful isn't it?

Hi Linjica, absolutely agreed, Is a matter of taste and personal preferences. I’m 51, so a beat ancient too, and I founded in the m8 a perfect camera. Perfect for me, with all its particularities and issues related with age. Photography is wonderful.

Well it is in your youtube name so of course you will go for the M8 :). The M8 was my first Leica and i remember when I looks at the first pictures from it with the summicron 50... I could not believe how special they looked (to me at least). All the best, I hope you are doing well.

Nice personal review! Pure design wise I prefer the M8 over the M9. The M8 its top plate(left side curving) is more esthetic and refined over the M9, M10 in my opinion. But would love to own either of them.

Me too, all this m cameras are great.

My Leica m8.2 only goes to 1/4000 and correct I’ve never had shutter issues!! Yet! I love this camera. I’ve added a video or two with my camera I’d you’d like to see. Love the channel. Cheers

I was seriously about to pull the plug on an M8, but an M9 presented itself at a price that made the M8 a costly choice by comparison. As a first time rangefinder Leica shooter I’m loving the whole experience and I’m a very happy with it.

M9 is great, i love mine. Excellent choice!!

I also own both m8 and m9, I also love m8 more but always take m9 with me just becuz it is full frame. Shoot outside head to head, m8 color is much more attractive, pop and magical than m9, especially the green on the leaf. On black and white, the tone is much richer in m8 as well. M8 has never hang up like m9, but viewing the photo just taken will take time to load. And m8 cannot do exposure compensation by the wheel on the thumb. One important down side of m8, is the apsc sensor cannot obtain the vignettes and dark corner by the lens. Some lens, like the noctilux F1.0, the vignettes is a very important component to give a unique look to the noctilux image. Also, the iso in m8 is less usable than m9, max acceptable iso for m8 is around 800. M9 I remember is about 1260 in raw file.

Absolutely agree, I never spoke about it, but In the m8 I miss the vignetting from lenses like the Voigtlander Nokton. Thanks for your comment!

My experience is completely different. My M9 is much faster than my M8, so it can be your camera. The Shutter of my M8 broke too. I brought it to Leica in Switzerland and they fixed it for much less money. But the colours of the M8 are more magical than the M9 colours.

Probably. For me it was always strange how slow is my M9, now things improve a lot with the right sd card and battery, but still, my 2 m8´s seems to have less problems rendering the files.

Is a matter of personal taste, m9 is a great camara, and the m8 too. What is important is to learn how to get the best of them and enjoy the experience.

I have M9. I needed that over M8 to compensate the size of my [censored].

Hi Hugo! Had a question and I thought you might know the answer. I also own a Leica M8. Do you know if there's any way to set it so vertical photos are displayed vertically in review, rather than flipped horizontally? I couldn't find a setting for this, but I wasn't sure if you knew a way. Thanks! Love your videos.

@@wei0428 You are welcome! By the way, I use a leather case that cover the back screen and protect the camera, and I like it a lot.

I have an M9 with the new sensor cover and circuit boards from Leica. I have not had the problems you speak of. Maybe I have the right SD card. I like the color very much. The M8.2, which I have, does great B&W. I have not compared them on color. Both are respectable cameras and I would always be happy with either. You talk about cameras with alma.

Thanks Zoltan. Yes, I suspect my M9 is a beat lazyer that others, because before i bought it I read a lot but never hear about this slow rendering issue. I tried many sd cards, and also batteries. Now I use a small one, and the camera behaves almost well..

@@myleicam8546I use a 16GB in the M8 and M9. Larger is advised against by Leica despite some folks doing it anyway. I do not believe the camera can address more than 16GB of memory.

Thank you! Never tried infrared photography. But I know m8´s are great in this regard.

I have both, and I like both. Although, both have their issues. The M8 has weird colours. Strange Leica engineering to deliver a product with a serious colour issue, I think. But: Black&white is the best ever! My M9 has the corrosion issue. But this only appears at higher aperture, and I like shooting wide open; so for me there mostly is no problem... for as long as it lasts, of course, because it will only get worse in time. But: The M9 colours are superior! Oh, and I don't care about megapixels. Keep us posted 🙂

I think the colors thing is a matter of taste. And between this two cameras, is so close and are so similar that sometimes I prefer colors from one over the other and viceversa. Depending on the light and many factors. But in general, mi taste goes with my hart ;-)

…Forget to say I never shoot colour jpegs in the m8. As you say they are weird. Very greenish in my opinion. For colour I always shoot DNG, and they are excellent. B&W jpegs are beautiful

Jpegs are greenish , indeed. DNG is much better.

There‘s actually no shutter issue with the best/original shutter of the first M8. It is just the grease that lets the shutter stuck when the cameras stay on the shelf for a long time.

It can be the reason, I don't know. I bought mine second hand so may be it was in a box for a long time. Mi guess is based in the fact that my camera failed after a few thousand of shoots done by me, and it fail when I was shooting 1/8000 against the sunset.

I’ve been looking at the M8 on eBay and many of them seem to be within reasonable pricing. Are the M8 still worth buying in 2022/2023 or are they just too far outdated? What major things should buyers keep an eye out for? Thanks in advance

Hi, and sorry for the delay. The M8 is a great and unique camera, I recommend it as a personal project camera, as something you enjoy, and keep you connected with the roots of photography, with the digital era advantages. After 8 years of ownership, I like it more and more.

Hi hugo, your read a lot about the "slow" m9. Without really knowing but the card might be a problem. Maybe a simple, smaler sd card might help. Had some issues with my fuji x100 years ago. cheers

Hi JR, I read trying to understand the problem. Now, thanks to a comment from Funktrainer i realize that may be the problem is related with shooting uncompressed DNG!

I would always prefer the M8 over my M9-P if it was just full frame. The DNG rendering is also better out of the box in the M8

No, the M8 sensor is fine

You have to set the M9 to compressed RAW as the M8 is always set to as the processor is not capable for uncompressed DNG shooting.

@@myleicam8546 Great to hear, I couldn‘t use my M9 until I activated compressed RAW. The review times and write times were too slow. I think with Leica the first generation of a camera series work traditionally best. So it has been with the Leicaflex, the M3/M4 and SL (Typ 601).
