Light meters take all the fun out of film photography, which is why I remove the batteries from my M6 and half-dozen other mechanical film cameras. When outdoors, I rely on the look of my own shadow to determine the correct exposure. It's simple. If my shadow has a hard, defined look, then I shoot either F16 or F11. When my shadow develops a softer edge , I open up to F8. As my shadow disappears, I open to F5.6 or F4. After the sun sets, I throw the lens as wide open as it will go. The shutter speed always remains 1/ISO.

Suntoryjim Thanks for this cool and easy rule. Will try this on a roll of film. And I am already curious on the results. Have you also any hints on developer and dilution for how to get lots of grey grades instead of hard contrasts if pushing e.g. HP5+ 400 to 1600 or even 3200 or 6400? The best I yet could figure out is HC-110 and I am using the times and dilution of the Massive Dev Chart Times app. I'd really appreciate all other suggestions

the sunny 16 is good, but I prefer to overexpose film, so I set my ISO to ISO/2 and then overexpose by two, so if its f16 i do f8, wonderful results

stupid question but how do you do when your camera only does 1/500th and your film is 400 iso? split the difference?

I had my August 1957 M3's double stroke ratchet advance to single stroke in 1983. I am so glad that I did. I became a photographer with that camera. In the pandemic, I will be using it this week on the empty streets.

Totally agree with what you said! I used to have a M6 but ended up selling it as I never quite connected with it. I thought of getting the M3, but ended up going with a M2 which is pretty much similar in construction/design but also has the 35mm framelines. Mine is from 1955 and attached to it is a rigid Summicron 50mm from 1962; Both work perfectly, Leica lenses/cameras from this period have such a solid build!

Great watch and some stunning images captured. I'm currently getting to grips with an M4-2 made in 1978 with Portra 400 shot at box speed. I'm going onto Tri X next with a Voigtlander single coated lens (35mm f1.4). Should give some great bw results. Keep the videos coming Ted, they're fabulous🇬🇧

I got one of these recently. Great camera. Funny thing for me though is after the first time I using the camera I actually liked my Leica CL better. But after shooting with it more I grew to like the M3 more and more.

Youre on fire with Leica's Ted! 3 bodies in about a year! Im loving using my M6 TTL. Was thinking hard about getting the M3 myself but opted for 35 summicron to add to 50 cron i have. Love shooting film. Would love to see how you develop and scan your film one of these days.

You hit the nail on the head about the two strokes: ergonomic. Also, I'm an adhd figetter extraordinaire, so tactile experience is If not a top, but THE priority. I got mine last week and cannot say enough good things about it.

Everything you said about what you love about your new Leica M3 I can identify with as regards to my Canon VT Deluxe(Canons answer to the M3). Very similar camera, very similar quality and ergonomics.(I once owned a Leica M3 double stroke with a 35 Summilux). You're spot on about the heightened sense of involvement with the photographic thought process. I can't afford Leica and Leica glass anymore but I'm enjoying my Canon and Voigtlander Color Skopars. My VT Deluxe has a bottom plate trigger (Think Leicavit) that allows me, as a left eyed shooter, to shoot continuously without taking my eye away from the viewfinder.(I often shoot triptych panoramas). Your examples, as always, are superb. Great video of a great camera.

Gotta love the old boys. Can't really afford to mess about with developing film but have got the xpro2 so can use the optical finder with no screen to get that manual feel. I do love those images though Ted.

Great review. I have a Leica M3 too. Beautiful camera, the images are stunning. I have no problem printing a 11x14 and still hold on clarity.

Yeah, this has been such a great camera to shoot with. I haven't printed anything from this camera specifically yet, but I've printed 13x19" film shots with just beautiful quality. The quality is so good I could easily go larger but I'm kind of not really interested in really large prints anymore. Never say never, but for the most part I'm preferring smaller prints, drawing the viewer in rather than projecting out to them. Thanks man!

Great video Ted, even though I shoot with my Fuji X-T1. You talk about learning to evaluate the light and using the sunny 16 rule. I use that anyway, even when shooting digital. What are you looking at/for when out and evaluating. What visual cues are you looking for when trying to set your exposure? It's something I'd like to do more, I guess.

If I ever decide to shoot film again, it'll probably be the m3. Used to have one. Really liked it. M6 might be alright if the price is right. The black m5 is one of the sexiest things on earth. Pushing tri-x was fun. Copied another guy's way of developing using Rodinal. EASY stuff to work with.

Great video as always Ted. Beautiful images! You mentioned that you shoot Acros 100 pushed to 400, is that true when you shoot at night? Or are you pushing it more?

Thanks very much! I keep it at 400 whether day or night. I have tried pushing to 800 and if you've got great light that can give you some pretty beautiful stuff. But if the light is too low, with the extra dev time for ISO 800 the contrast gets too high and it can really be a pretty (too) dark image. I've been meaning to experiment with pushing to 800 but develop for 400 and see what that produces, but just haven't gotten around to it. Thanks again!

nice m3. besides the double stroke of the early m3's, they say the strap lugs are better built as well. I haven't actually tried a double stroke m3, but I can imagine the ergonomics slightly bettet.. you don't have to extend your thumb movement as much and the short double stroke action can actually be quicker than the long single, not that the m3 is a camera you're likely to be speed shooting with, but nice feature none the less.

Must be nice having a camera permanently connected to your hand. Sorry Ted I had too...lol😁😁 Great video my man.

I've always preferred the M3 over the M6, mostly because of aesthetics. How do you scan your film? The results look spectacular!

Hey Vince, yeah, I love my M6 but more often have been taking the M3 with me when I go out. I just really love the "no meter" thing. It's funny, but without having the meter telling me what I should do, it's almost more of a freeing experience determining the exposure on my own. I guess I never have been a fan of being told what to do, even if by a light meter. ;)

Great pics have 2 make do with a zorki but perhaps some day if interested how about the Brit reud3. Regards

I need to try pushing Acros. I've shoot it each time at box speed and feel it doesn't give me the punch of TriX. Seems like your solution works.

Great video, as always! I love my M3; it's my favourite camera of all time, though I have to admit I find myself using my M4 more frequently owing to the latter's inclusion of 35mm framelines. They're pretty similar in almost all other respects, but I much prefer the metal frame advance lever on the M3 over the M4's two-piece frame advance lever.

Ted - Do you ever use any contrast filters when shooting B&W during the day, say Yellow or Orange? The M3 is one camera I will never sell, the viewfinder can't be beat for 50mm... Cheers!

Hey I'm a new Leica M3 owner and I have a 35mm lens and was wondering whats a good 50mm and trying to use to this camera has been a challenge and getting used to the viewfinder and framing

the short double stroke is faster to cock than a single stroke, also single stroke is long and you have ti swing further, you can with lightening speed cock an M 3 double stroke much faster. I once owned an M2 and M3 that I got at a bargain price at an estate sale, the idea was to flip them on ebay to recover my cost cause I had also gotten a canon 0.95 there, wow I never played with these much! great video and to the point explanation!

Too late, I'm drawn in. Leica is now my favorite search term on eBay. How are you scanning your negatives? My Nikon Coolscan V is in need of love and I'm looking for a new scanner.

Ha ha HA... yep, too late, man. Same thing happened to me. ;) I hesitated buying my first M6... I knew it was my first step on to that slippery slope. I do love it though and am very glad to be shooting with these cameras. Keep an eye KEH.com or UsedPhotoPro.com. Those are two good sites for buying used gear from a reputable seller. I'm using an Epson V600 to scan. It's fine. There are newer models out now, but you can still find a V600 new for less than a couple hundred bucks (USD). It's a little slow, but fine. Ha! Welcome to the dark side, man. :)

Hi Ted: great video. I’m looking at buying one myself, and so had a couple of questions that may sound pretty basic so my apologies in advance: First-the ISO dial only goes up to 200. Does this really mean anything in a camera without a light meter? I mean, can higher speed films be used if I were so inclined? Second- you mentioned “Acros 100 pushed to 400” - I’m going to presume you mean pushed during processing, correct? Again I would imagine this is because of there being no light meter, or am I totally off the mark? Thanks Sanjeev

Thanks very much, Sanjeev. Yeah, the ISO dial has absolutely no effect on your exposure. It's really only a reminder, if you want to use it, for what speed your current film is. And yeah, when I shot ACROS I just set my shutter speed and aperture accordingly as if I had 400 speed film in the camera. Then I'd develop the film as if it were 400 speed film. For ACROS, HC-110 (b), 68°F/20°C for 10 minutes. The M3 is a beautiful camera and offers such a great shooting experience. :)

Ted Vieira : Thanks for your reply. I just got a 1955 M3 double stroke (“Buddha’s ears” model) body in great condition from a local seller that had been CLAed by Youxin Ye earlier this month. Viewfinder patch looks great and film advance lever and shutter are something else. I’m stoked! Now got to load some film and get cracking! (Got some Ferrania P30 that I want to try out, as well as Acros 100 before it runs out 🙁)

Ted, where do you get your film developed?

Hi Ted, Thank you very much for making and sharing that video. I just got back to film camera and was not sure I'd really like the Leica M experience (I've always shot SLR and DSLR for the past 8 years) so I went and bought a Leica M8 with a 35mm f/2 Zeiss. Nice outfit, nice pics (especially in b&w) but it lacks the whole uniqueness of the film shooting experience. And pushing that two steps further (only manual mode and NO light meter) really appeals to my minimalistic nature!! Just one question: do you do any post prod after you've scanned the pics and before you share them with us or do they just come out crisp and detailed like that when shooting the Acros 100 pushed to 400?? Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Hey Nicolas, thanks very much, man. As far as doing any post processing on the scans, it just depends on the shot. I really try to do very little post work on film. I've found the more I do, processing wise, can take the photo further away from that "look" of film that I love. I might just do a slight exposure tweak, maybe bring the highlights back a bit, or deepen the blacks a bit. That's one thing I really notice about shooting film vs digital - with film I do a lot less post work, if any at all.

Wow, thanks for such a quick response :) just one more question if I may: did you try to use a 35mm lens on the M3? I have read here and there that without a "goggle system" it is pretty hard to see all the way to the limits of the field of view but in "emergency" situations, it is "usable".... what (if any) is your take on this? ps: yeah, you guessed it, I have my heart set on a beautiful M3 DS with its collapsible 50mmF2.8 but I own a 35mmf2 Zeiss, and I'm on the verge of buying the beauty....

Great video Ted, can see you love the camera. Was that a 35mm Summicron on there, I have a 50mm on mine. I suspect there is a story there as the viewfinder isnt wide emough for 35mm framelines, in fact there is almost no space round the 50mm framelines. Are you just guessing the extent of the frame?

Hi Vici, thanks very much! I'm using my Summicron 50 on the M3. Then I just keep my 35 on my M6. I love both those cameras and both those lenses, so it works out. And yeah, I'd have to pick up the goggles/accessory to see the 35mm frame lines on the M3. Thanks again!

Hey Yussef, thank you very much, man! Yeah, I'll develop the film then scan the negatives. I use an Epson V600 flatbed scanner. It works fine and I don’t have any problem with the scan quality. You can usually find them or an equivalent scanner for around $200 USD. The thing I wish it was a little better at would be speed. I guess by nature, scanning with a flatbed scanner is not the fastest thing in the world. But with the V600 I I kind of have to “babysit” it a bit to make sure it continues to move on to the next frame to scan. Sometimes it will just sit there unless I move or click the mouse. But other than that it works great for me. I’ve heard the later models, the V800 and V750 are better, but not sure what the improvements are. And I’ve heard that for the money, the V750 is the better value to go with. (they can be kind of pricey though) This is the only film scanner I’ve ever used so don’t have a wide range of experience to speak from, and I’m sure there are some other good options out there, but hope this helps.

Very well said Ted. The cameras being released now, such as the XT-2, Olympus EM1ii and Nikon D500 offer incredible technology but they basically do everything for you, it's now possible to take great sports/action/wildlife images one handed, using your other hand to text a friend or eat a sandwich! They are idiot-proof. Personally I find this very boring, I want to be concentrated, involved, I want to develop technique and photographic skills. One can only achieve this 'the hard way' (the exciting way!) Photographing basketball games in manual focus one will soon become very knowledgable.

Great video and very impressive work! Just wondering, do you ever have trouble seeing all of the 50mm framelines while shooting with your glasses (if you shoot with your glasses)?

Thanks very much! When using 50mm on my M3, I don't so much look for the framelines. I just figure pretty much everything I see will be in the shot. If the framing is very critical and I really need to check the framelines I'll work a little harder to look at all for of the borders and make sure I'm getting what I want. Usually it's not that critical, and since it's a rangefinder the shot's going to be a little off anyway.

No filters. That's just the way they come out. I often shoot a lot later in the day without a lot of sun, that may be what darkened the skies in some of the shots.

Waiting to get mine back from a CLA . Its like waiting for a child to be born.

Great images Ted, I have never owned a Leica but when you take them away from the "red badge jewellery brigade" they are awesome machines. Used like you they give up there full potential, you are making Leica cool again man! Great stuff👍😎🇬🇧

I prefer double stroke too, but it can be converted into single stroke from what I understand.

Can't deal with using a film camera without a meter tbh which is why I prefer the M6, but the design of the M3 is definitely prettier. I think usability peaked for the M6, aperture priority feels weird on a Leica but I don't want to carry a meter with me

Hey Ted, I just got a Fuji X-T1. so far I have a 35mm and 50mm manual focus lens. I also have a fuji XF 23mm f/2. I want a super wide lens for architectural or street photography, preferably manual focus, prime, and compact. The Fuji XF 16mm is a little too expensive. Any recommendations?

Which lens did you use on this?

On my M3 I always shoot with a Summicron 50mm. Lately I've been noticing some focusing issues with that lens (back focusing). Just sent it to DAG to have the focus adjusted. Hopefully will be back before the end of the year. Great lens though.

Cool. Hope you get it back in time for New Year’s. I’m looking at getting a collapsible Summicron or even a Summitar with a screw mount adapter to get started with an M3. Still looking at how many stop’s worth of vignetting there is on the Summitar wide open.

@@jrodori Very cool lens selection. I'm pretty set, but I'd like to maybe at some point pick up a dedicated 50 that stays on the M3 all the time. Maybe a Summicron collapsible or rigid model. Both of those would seem fitting for that body. Let me know what you get, man.

Ted Vieira yo. I’m putting off getting an M3 + 50mm Summicron. I’ve been having too much fun with a Rolleiflex 3.5A that I just got. Delta 3200 and Portra 160 are a dream through that. Trying color positive film next.

Hey Peter, no, I still use my X-Pro2 and Fuji glass for client work. I'm starting to mix a little bit of film into my client work when it fits, but most of that stuff it's more practical to use digital.

Photography the hard way.

Any body here like me, when I hear Ted'd voice, I thinking about an actor in Fast and Furious series, Vin Diesel.

A camera with a meter tells you what to do, without a meter you tell the camera what to do.

My M3 D.S. is smooth, but Ted Viera is smoother.

I love my Double Stroke.M3 and purposely looked for it when I was shopping around for one a year ago. I found one from a guy who was selling his on craigslist here in L.A with the vintage 50mm Summicron pullout lens and when I asked why he was selling is because he was going to buy a Leica M9 and needed funds. you can double stroke a single, but you can't single stroke a double.
