Yeah, it's really simple. But it gets a little more mind breaking if you see someone holding one of these up by the top piece/the whole thing hanging from another hook. Because now instead of just being stabilized, the entire bottom pillar is supported by the top.

I finally got it! The "floating" peace is heavier in the left (from the thumbnail's angle) so it should tilt to the left if it were to fell, but given the other 2 chaibs are there, if it were to tilt it'd be lifting up the thing that's holding it. But given the stand is heavier than the left side of the floating thing

It's all about tension and compression forces. The chains are under tension, putting the arms under compression. In tensegrity structures, parts under tension are connected only to parts under compression and vice versa.

I know this has been said before but for the people who still dont get it, let's call the bottom bit the main part and the floating bit the floating bit (easy right?) So the chain coming from the top of the main part is pulling up on the floating bit and the floating part is connected on the sides with the two other chains which makes an equilibrium sort of balance where the first chain is holding the floating part up but the other 2 are just balancing it more, there can usually be three near the back side of it but that's just to make it even more balanced and wont tip over as often as that (hope this helps, this might not be the full explanation/might miss some facts or something so if you are smarter than be do comment :D)

Im not smarter than you, but I think the important bit (at least to me) would be mentioning that it's sort of leaning back, and thats what the 2 chains are preventing it from doing. You did say tip over, so I guess that covers it. But the way he picked it up to put it in place, it wouldnt fall that way, it would fall sort of backwards, but those 2 chains are preventing it from doing that. Thats where the balance is. Idk, I guess you covered it lol I just think that the "leaning back" or "falling backwards" helps me understand it, once I realized it.

  • @celivalg

basically you have to think in terms of gradients, with the center of gravity trying to go down the gradient slope. since that chain in the bottom is holding it, and the center of gravity is further than the anchor point, it wants to rotate 'forward' but those two chains in the back are preventing it to rotate, effectively creating a local minima where the structure is stable. For the two other axis of rotation, the 2 chains in the back are also preventing it

  • @memestealer6348

  • @hasiumcreeper5384

I like to think of it in terms of torques. If the two larger chains weren't there, the top part of the structure would rotate counterclockwise. But the two larger chains prevent it from doing that. That's why Emmet was placed on the right side of the structure, since, if he were placed on the left side of the structure, it would feel a clockwise torque, rotate clockwise, and collapse.
