    I love this but I do have a suggestion: a gear reduction between the steering motor and the steering box would give finer gained control over the steering.

    i think it would be better if the drive connected straight to the diff ring gear instead of the center inputs and the steering was the center

    AFAIK that's how real tanks steer, except that they have epicyclic gearings instead of the two differentials.

    while the mechanical solution is very elegant, i think more effective will be one motor per side (and use electronic mixing) because for forward driving it would have full power. by your solution the tank will have a boost when driving a curve which make it more agile

    I thought about this design over two motors for each track. The only advantage is perfect synchronization between two sides. Should go perfectly straight. But it is not efficient. You have two motors, but when you want to go fast, only one motor is used. You may have bigger motor for straight movement, but in this case your steering is weaker. So I came back to two motors for each track.

  • @techmatt3088

    this will work of course. But the real Tanks use steering gears like this and I wanted to build such a thing. One problem with two motors is to sync the two tracks at higher speed. One motor for the speed and the tank will go exactly forward . The steering motor smoothly overrides the speed of the tracks so you can do very soft curves.

    classic case of over-engineering. there are better ways to do this. you can easily do it with one differential gear. connect one motor to one track, connect the second track via the differential to the first track, connect the second motor to the differential housing. viola, same feature, yet only 6 gear wheels instead of 19. basically just remove one of these differentials and connect the free pin straight to the track. the second differential is redundant. or... just connect one motor to each track. ;D

  • @techmatt3088

    @techmatt3088

    3 жыл бұрын

    sorry for the late answer. This wont work because the tracks would run in opposite directions. And the second motor would only increase or decrease the speed of the second track.

    @@techmatt3088 i now see the beauty in your version. one motor for moving forward, another motor for neutral steering. my version would need less gears, but another way of motor control. however, since youre using 2 motors, i guess id just connect one motor to each track --> zero gears. ^.^ challenge: try build one with only one motor and one differential! :)
