I must say I do agree that they would be useless on any other set, but I really feel like the set wouldn't have looked anywhere near as polished if they have built such curved and angular parts with multiple pieces, we probably would have gotten a flimsy square mudguard.

I think these are very important parts which shape a car or any vehicle having them. If it would have some random shape, it would not look as great as it does now. Its part of a very important design feature.

Excellent! The designer's done a really good job on the looks. The interview shows how much work went into this!
Seems like the perfect set for people who are just getting their Lego Technic collections started - has all the transmission pieces you could ever need, fully independent double wishbone suspension, steering wheel, differentials, good wheels and tires - all you would need afterwards would be motors (which are easy to purchase separately). This set looks like a great start for beginning Lego vehicle engineers. I could easily see someone using the parts from this set to build a sports car, etc.
Looks cooler than the real defender
Was patiently waiting for this video review to be up. Superb quality as usual.
I love that you now make these Trading Cards for every Set. It's a nice Summary of the Review and so far every one was similar to my thoughts! I think a lot of people can agree with the "effects" you give the Sets as a Magical Item.

I must agree, this is the best-looking LEGO off-roader to date, and one of the best-looking Technic models, on par with the Chiron. I must also agree with your mudguard gripe: it messes with the purpose of LEGO. AAAAND finally I also agree with the transmission problem. I'd love to see a motorized shifter mechanism like in the 8043 incorporated into the next giant crane, or maybe a CVT in a vehicle. Great review, and thank you.

@@quintinseegers7317 It is reasonably priced. It's long known that LEGO follows the pricing according to their US prices. This set cost USD199.99. Converted from AU$330, it's roughly USD230. Converted from NZ$400, it's roughly USD268. For my country, Singapore, it retails for SGD299 or USD222. However, for me, I have the option of buying it online at a much cheaper price (Below retail + promo codes from application), so it cost SGD200 for me, or roughly USD148.50 Come to think of it, now that I compare the prices, I think either your retailers selling LEGOs are jacking up the price to make a profit or the custom import cost to your country is high. Yeah, but for me, I am able to get this set @ USD148.50 online locally so it does not matter. Oh BTW I bought the batmobile set @ SGD243 (Or USD180) using the same online platform. And before anyone of you asks, that platform is exclusively for Singaporeans only. They don't allow to ship internationally.

I want to buy it! If they will lower the prices a little bit, i buy it. It has very good parts and very much that i could never buy from my country or use
For some reason, the engine doesn’t move when I set it to any of the gears :/
You can tell from the video that the wheels turn better inside the wheel well.
I was very careful when assembling the huge gearbox system but I guess I did something wrong because the engine pistons aren't always moving, most often they don't do anything.
Yeah me too I really like the classic
I WANT THIS
what i would have liked to see is a drivetrain with 4x4 function switched on or off. where the differentials can be locked including the front and rear wheels. but i dont know if the defender has such a function in reality at all.
Im building this set now 😀
I also really prefer the old Land Rover but this thing still looks like a beast
That's a great review, thank you. I'm not 100% sure to buy it later (or have as a christman gift *wink wink wink*) but I really like the tons of detail and the apparent complexity of the mechanical part. I'll wait to see it drive motorized now, I think it could be a great and playable RC model.
2 stud lift kit and those big Claas tires to it, dump the transmission and put XL motor in it to make it real offroader.

28:03 I disagree. Even in Creator sets there are specific parts for fenders. You can use them as fenders or something else, like a decorative element for some kind of gate, for example.
I have the same feeling as you, nice set but not really the lego philosophy, but I am sure this type of set (like the porsche chiron) enable lego to gain more customers.
All right, for a kid aged 9-12 (and any AFOL of course), I can see this being as interesting as 8880 Supercar was for me back in the 90's, it's actually a neat product with a reasonable price. I am happy it's not motorized - it would be disappointingly slow, as usual.
I feel like the reason they dont really do B models anymore is because they haven't done that many big non-branded technic sets, so it probably is for licensing issues as they would have to have a separate vehicle from the same brand, which would require more pieces and higher price
I put the video on 2x speed and the music sounded so happy and sarials arms were blurry
A great review as always, Sariel! Totally agree that metallic green would have been the better color choice for this model. Too bad this licensed set does not include any info in the instructions about the real car, designer, etc. like the Porsche, Bugatti, Volvo. I also wonder why the gearbox is switched and wasn't made ready for motorization. I like your Defender much better as it represents an iconic vehicle. LEGO should have made the old Defender, but then people would have complained about the lookalike to the Ideas entry.
Dear Sariel, I am a long time Lego fan, but not so much of the Technic range, even if I appreciate many of some released sets and would buy one or two a year if my budget was not already dedicated to SW and Ninjago. But I do appreciate your videos and reviews, the way you complete them with comments and more than anything the fact that your opinions are always as objective as possible (or so it seems to me, because as it is your opinion it's obviously subjective, but I think not that influenced by the fact that Lego provides you many sets for review. Lucky guy!) So thank you for allowing us to discover and appreciate sets that many of us will never get because : 1)one has to make sometimes hard choices in life and /or 2) because Lego can be an expensive hobby and passion and, but for a very few people, it's impossible to purchase each single set we would like to. So sincere thanks for your work. I have now a question. Are you left-handed? The way you turn the pages of the leaflet made me think of it. Thank you.

Review coming September 26th.
Just a random thought that popped up: maybe Lego Technic's transmissions would make more sense if the lower gears somehow introduced more friction in the drive train, slowing down the movement of the car when you push it along. When you switch to a higher gear, the car becomes easier to push along and thus goes faster. Obviously, the change in piston movement frequency in the engine would still remain. I have no idea how to implement all of this though.

1. The LEGO Group produces the Technic model with gearbox that distribute the rotation to different features like doors, hood, trunk opening etc. Fans react like "uhh, fake gearbox! It doesn't change the gears, who needs these pointless functions? Let's blame them!" 2. The LEGO Group produces the Technic model with gearbox that really change the gears allowing to have different ratio betwen the engine and wheels. Fans react like "uhh, boring gearbox! It just change the gears, who needs these different speeds? Let's blame them!" Great review except of that unfair thing. Well done!

@leoslego5965
4 жыл бұрын
I don't have 42069, but judging by the functions and looks 42110 (which I have) is better. I mean, a 4 speed transmission, a 2 speed transmission, a full double wishbone indep. suspension versus full live axle suspension, no transmission, and an opening roof? 42110 is the clear winner for me.
@philp8872
4 жыл бұрын
Indeed 42069´s weakest point is the lack of a transmission, on the other hand there´s more room to put motors in! It was the first set after my dark ages and one major buying point was the live axle suspension (AFAIK the first time in a Lego set) like the real old Defender, old Landcruisers etc. have. Also the door mechanism is really cool and could be on a RL very expensive custom vehicle. I moded mine with wheels (quickly changed back to the tracks), very happy with it, a dream project for the future would be to throw 4 buggy motors in! The transmission of 42110 with 4*2+R gears is very realistic (although the real one is rather 5*2 or 6*2), in fact this video changed my mind about the set and I´m thinking of buying it. The only downfall is this shitty fake engine! My personal problem is that I have a real pre-Defender Land Rover, and the new Defender is absolutley meaningless to me, to be honest it doesn´t deserve the Land Rover badge! 42069 has no centre diff, 42110 has a open centre diff! For both Sets I´d rather have a lockable centre diff! Will we ever see that in a official Set? In the end both Sets will look great sitting toghether on the shelf: One representing a highly customized serious Offroader (in my eyes it´s a Toyota Land Cruiser), the other one a SUV looking like all modern SUVs, with the badge of an serious Offroader!
