In this video, we'll discuss The Great LEGO Spill which occurred on February 13, 1997 when the container ship Tokio Express was hit by a massive rouge wave about 20 miles off the coast of Cornwall England. Nearly 5 million LEGO bricks were lost to the dark ocean abyss (4.8 million to be exact). However, these LEGO bricks began washing up on beaches all over the world. Even today, it's still possible to find LEGO bricks on the beach from this ocean disaster!
But that's not all! How about an 8 foot tall LEGO minifigure floating around in the ocean? Yup! Watch this entire video to learn the secrets of this giant minifigure that washed up on beaches across the globe from 2007 to 2014. It's a fascinating story!

Its a good thing that Lego is such high quality, wich makes it valuable and less likely to be thrown away, unlike other plastic toys.
Very fitting that underwater themed Lego sets and rubber ducks ended up in the water as opposed to other toys
I saw this and immediately thought “Someone needs to build a giant Lego fish park at the bottom of the ocean”

Paper bags much easier to rip open then plastic
I'm still wondering if Lego actually contributed to cleaning up their spill.
@Isengrim24

How would they do that? It's impossible to fish out this many small pieces of plastic. It isn't like there was a huge lego "island" floating on the surface of the water.

I live in cornwall and it’s rlly cool ive found multiple bricks before. There’s a specific beach that has loads. Also the way he pronounces cornwall…
That brick link order is fire 🔥
I've dreamed of that one day
Bro what are the chances the same video by Tom Scott was recommended to me directly under this one
Wow… No one told me about this. Very interesting. Nice vid once again👍
Paking My stuff and going to that beach
Spit:that spill caused more pollution Me: that spill caused more joy for the fished that found the lego bricks :)
rest in peice like 500,000 of lego
*meanwhile, on the jurassic coast...* wow! ive just found a complete, intact, fossil t-rex skeleton, i'm rich! not as rich as me, i just found the limited edition, lego centennial, bi-annual, bionicle, u.s-only, sunk-at-sea, starwars, t-rex, luke skywalker, architectural set, mini-figure! WOW! holy hell, whuut? hot damn! d'you wanna swap? 😂
The reason for them travelling so far is the ocean currents, they go down, past the upper portion of africa then across the atlantic up the US coast and back towards uk, some found in cornwall have most likely crossed the Atlantic
I love your videos
Nah some of these are just someone’s lost lego 😂
What belongs to the sea must return to the sea.
5 million lego pieces sounds like a lot but it’s not as much as you might envision.
Stepping on a Lego is painful enough but *on a beach* *aw hell naw*
So many cutlasses (90k) that were lost.
I actually found a Lego shark with no head unfortunately and a a spear gun at Panama City beach in 2021 and I still have them till this day in my display case with the title legos from the sea

Both of those pieces were in the Lego spill. Because the shark was shipped as separate pieces, all of the ones found are like yours. Sounds like you might have found some long-travelled vintage pieces!

HEY!
I want to clean the beach but I’ll be keeping every Lego I find.
Now this is a Lego movie I might watch.
I just finished reading "Adrift: The Curious Tale of the Lego Lost at Sea" by Tracey Williams, who frequently visited the beaches of Cornwall and has been collecting Lego and Lego stories for many years. She also set up the Facebook page mentioned in the video. Really eye-opening read that uses the Lego spill as a way to dig deep into the problem of plastics in our oceans.
FREE LEGO!!!! LETS GOOOOOOOO. dont have to buy a $50 set with one minifiger and 100 pieces.

That is ironic and poetic in a way XD
Perfect they can travel to Beaches in Australia and probably all over the world so this is fun
That’s me trying to make a Lego boat with pieces on the back
Oh jeeeeeeez Lego brickssss
I wondered if I'd find any on a trip to Cornwall about 18 months back.. My wife looked down as we explored the beach at Tintagel and a single red 2x4 brick washed ashore... Oddly, not seemingly one of the ones from this spill. So in an area where thousands of sea themed Lego bricks wash ashore, we managed to find the one that wasn't sea themed! We removed it and took it home.
The lego Sea creatures git freeded
I dont think this is from that but when I was a kid (early 2000s) I found a yellow 2x2 brick at the beach while digging in the sand. It was all weathered and like smoother than usual. I still have it somewhere in one of my bins
Ego Leonard is quite literally “a man has fallen into the river in Lego City”

This black dragon had missing head top, arms, and a tail. I think those lego were replacement pieces in the boxes when those container were smashed and opened to fall.

Honestly, I feel LEGO shouldn’t be using paper bags. There’s a time and a place for eco, and LEGO is never it. Plants from plants failed, and so will using scrap plastic, if Lego wants to retain its reputation as a toy maker of safe and durable plastic bricks.
