    One quick thing I would like to note, is that you absolutely can buy sets early in their shelf life if you find a spectacular deal on it, because then you can hopefully resell it right away for close to retail price. You tend to find these great deals at local pickers/antique stores, thrift stores, and occasionally retail stores. An example of this is, I just recently found the luigi started course at one said pickers shop for $25 sealed (orig $60), this you could then quickly sell for $50-$55 since the set is still so new and make a quick $25 ish profit.

    1) Passion (for LEGO, obv.)! 2) Look for sales. 3) Don't go into debt. 4) Buy sets close to retirement (not at release). 5) Hold for 2 ~ 3 years. 6) Buy bigger sets if possible.

    Man, I hope that passion tip rings true. I'm been into Lego for years not as a seller but as a fan and customer. even since I was a kid I've seen sets introduced, go on sale, retire, and then shoot up in price on Amazon after a year or two. I feel like I've got a pretty good handle on how system work and I really feel like I can take the next step and start inventing in them just because I'm so familiar. This video and a lot of other ones are giving me the confidence to go in and try investing. Thanks so much for the awesome tips. I've just started down this journey, and like you, I first had the idea of just funding my modest Lego habit by reselling a few sets. After some research, my eyes opened up to the world of Lego investing. So much to consider and decide! On larger vs. smaller sets: isn't there the downside of (very) high shipping costs when selling a large model? For example, the Stranger Things Upside Down is quite large (though by no means the largest), and I imagine shipping (including box and packing material) to be substantial. It's all passed on to the buyer, of course, but it factors into the buyer's decision to buy (or to decline). I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  • @TheBrickQuest

    @TheBrickQuest

    Absolutely! Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! On larger vs smaller that is very good question! I actually did a whole video in this topic. Here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZoRrl9KMhsbKYco.html It is more expensive to ship a larger set. Typically a larger set is $20-30 per set to ship via eBay. Small sets are anywhere from $7 up per item. Most of the time you can ship one large item and make the same money as 4-6 smaller sets. It ends up costing more time and money to ship a whole bunch of small sets.

    I am curious about picking up the Scooby Doo van and large sets that come with mini-figs such as the new Daily Bugle set. How do you know if a set "will" go up in value? Also, do sets fluctuate in value where there are periods of depressed prices? What is considered a large set? How many pieces is considered large? If I do want to invest in Lego should I shop for a theme such as Marvel character sets, Scooby Doo, Disney, etc...?

  • @TheBrickQuest

    @TheBrickQuest

    3 жыл бұрын

    All great questions! Sets with minifigures can be very popular! Especially sets that have exclusive minifigures. The Daily Bugle has several cool exclusive mini-figures. There is not a sure way to know if they will go up in value but if you stick with popular themes and licenses such as Disney, marvel, Lego Modulars etc You will typically do well! Sets prices can fluctuate after retirement but will typically have an upward trend if it’s a good set. I am typically looking for sets that are at least $100 or more. Not to say that a $60 architecture purchase wouldn’t be a good purchase as well! 80% of my investment sets are $100 or more. Look for sets that are high demand and have a popular track record and purchase them right before they retire at a good price if you can! More to come on the investment topic! Thanks for watching!

    Hmmm I guess I do a little but it is hard to get a quick return. Typical return I am seeing is 4 years after set is retired. I flip other items that I can get a faster return with little storage... lol but of course that income funds the LEGO hobby...lol

  • @TheBrickQuest

    @TheBrickQuest

    3 жыл бұрын

    Very true about a quick return! I try to sell within the 2-3 years in some cases due to the fact that I stop seeing as significant a continued climb in value. Some sets definitely do take that 4+ years. I feel it’s better to sell once it stops climbing as quickly and put that money back into sets that are newly retired that will have stronger growth at first. But just like you said, storage is tough and there are other great items to sell as well! At the end of the day as long as we can fund this expensive hobby one way or the other it all works. 😂

  • @TheBrickQuest

    @TheBrickQuest

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Yes the larger popular sets can be harder to find on discount. Some of the sets, like modulars, are typically hardly ever going to be discounted. Other larger sets on Lego Ideas etc can a lot of times be found on discount at Christmas time when they are about to retire! That is the time to grab them. Also, Zavvi is good website to buy discounted larger sets. There are some drawbacks to this as they ship from the UK. Also, keep an eye on FB Lego sale pages that will post periodic deals on sets.

    I'd be interested to learn about your experience selling on different platforms and how to go about it ... eBay, Amazon (How to get on it for starters!), is Bricklink worth it, etc. I'm just getting into Lego investing and have a number of sets like Lego Ideas (Treehouse and others), Modular's like Assembly Square, multiples of the speed champions sets that are due to retire soon, and like you said in this video, storage can become a problem space wise! I tend to keep all the sets in the boxes they are shipped to me in, that way it protects them from dust & light damage over time, plus when I want to sell them, they are already in packaging and I don't need to purchase anything extra (that's the theory anyway!)

    Currently we sell on EBay and Bricklink! I will work on another video that outlines the selling process online that we use. Good choice on the retiring sets! We are actually holding those same ones and storage can be difficult! Storing and keeping them pristine in box can be hard with space but it sounds like you have a good system to keep them in good condition! Stay tuned for some more videos on this topic in the future.

    I keep the smaller sets, like Speed Champions sets in Walmart cube shipping boxes, because of their firmness, & those will usually hold a large number of small Speed Champion sets depending on the size of the Walmart cube size. As for the bigger sets, I find keeping them in their original shipping box eventually takes up too much space in your storage, once you reach a certain level, so I like to break their shipping boxes down, & place sets vertically in storage. Haven't really had a problem with seals loosening over time with that. I like to get bigger sets from Lego stores directly due to the chance of shipping damage in transit, which can be high with Target, & Amazon, but if you don't live near a store, then of course no choice but to get online.

I have email Lego, they give me a answer so fast, offer 2,500VIP points and shipp me directly two new sets (send back for free the two box broken sets). Hi, don't you think that there's a higher probability for a small (and good) set to increase by 100%, in a relatively shorter period, compared to a large set? I know there's more work with sales and shipping, but perhaps the higher profit margin makes it worthwhile? Additionally, if we consider cash flow, selling a large set, especially at a higher price than the catalog price (which is already substantial), will be much more challenging than selling several smaller sets.🤔

  • @TheBrickQuest

    @TheBrickQuest

    10 ай бұрын

    All good points Dominic. It is possible that the smaller sets could grow in value faster in some cases depending on the set. The big thing for me is time and expense. It just takes a lot of time to sell a lot of smaller sets and also more expense shipping each set. Still definitely plenty of money to be made with smaller sets but just something to consider.

    Good question! I’m sure that some sets would grow in value substantially over that long a period of time. Most sets though tend to slow down their aftermarket growth in the 3-5year span. I prefer to invest in them and then sell them once they have doubled or tripled in price so that I can do it again. You will probably still make money keeping them 30years but more money could probably be made if you buy/sell every 3-5years. Just my opinion. Good luck!

  • @dominmax

    @dominmax

    10 ай бұрын

    Remember that not only the prices of sets are increasing, but also inflation is on the rise. If inflation grows faster than the value of your sets over 30 years, you'll end up losing in the long run. For instance, if inflation were at 3% per year (and in recent years, in some countries, it has been far higher), over 30 years, to break even on a set you purchased for $100, you would have to sell it for at least $380. I think people who are amazed by the astronomical prices of past sets often overlook inflation, which automatically raises prices not only for everyday items like bread and eggs but also for LEGO sets :)

    Primarily EBay and Bricklink for right now! I know Amazon is also a great option but haven’t branched into that platform yet. Thanks for watching!

    I have a dilemma. I'm just getting into Lego investing, have spent a scary amount of money, and am taking delivery of my first sets. However I won't know how my collection is going and whether I'm comfortable with Lego investment until at least 1 year from now. Meanwhile, numerous great sets will retire before then. Do I spend even more money on those next year before I have "proof of concept"? Anyone has any words of wisdom?

    Great question! As with any investment there is always the element of risk. I don't think there is a cookie cutter answer to that question. I would invest in LEGO at your comfort level. I wouldn't worry about missing out on potential good investments because again everything is a risk and good investment sets and deals will always come back around. Always invest at a comfortable level so that if you do lose on some sets it will not hurt you in any major way. Hope this helps a bit and thanks for watching!

    I'm also about a year in, the first sets I really loaded up on were the Star Wars 20th Anniversary Slave 1 and the Mando/Sith battle packs. I've put about $3k into sets so far, but haven't done any selling or profit taking. I definitely think a set-it-and-forget-it approach focused on long term gains is best, so really I think patience is key to success with LEGO investing

    @@ASwankyLemon Great point! Patience is definitely key. Also the Lego Star Wars Slave One 20th anniversary edition was a great buy!

    Definitely can be a hassle! I’ve got another video coming up that dives deeper into the bigger vs smaller set investment pros and cons! Stay tuned!
