3:11 one thing I'll point out for this set: you don't use ALL of those stickers. That sticker sheet has several different rail companies on it, like the Dutch NS railways, the german Deutsche Bahn, Switzerland's SBB and the British Railways. Each of them has specific ways in how they put signage on carriages. As mentioned, sets in that era were leaning a bit more towards models, so it was quite nice to get appropriate stickers for YOUR national railway. I certainly appreciated them including Dutch NS stickers.

I love stickers in these cases, it's very nice when you can personalize trains. However, I just build the space shuttle, and those silver stickers on the inside of the cargo hold are horrible.

That used to be the norm, at least from what I remember. I still have an old Egypt Adventure set with printed images on the bricks. They look awesome

I was under the impression the sportsball sets being stickers instead of prints was a _deliberate_ design choice, so you could choose which nations' flags to put on your own minifigs without them having to make a separate set for every combo (or per-team sets). As a little kid, I know I put the Brazil stickers on mine because "I like green" and didn't know until much later which nation it was (to be fair, Brasil's well known for futbol)...

It's the same with the old intercity train set. You can choose your (reallife) train company (and hence the country of origin). The one in the photo is DB from Germany and hence also the German name for the restaurant wagon but I could also spot Denmark, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and others.

What’s especially terrible is when the stickers are mashed up in the box.

So, a thing with applying stickers you might want to start doing is what's done in model building (gundam models in particular). Many kits come with literal hundreds of stickers, often tiny transparent ones (though not frequently placed on transparent pieces). Use either a hobby knife (I don't use this method, but you bend the sheet to lift the edge, then stick it to just the tip of the knife) or a good set of tweezers (bend the sheet enough to grab an edge) to remove the stickers from the sheet, then you can carefully position it into place without actually touching the sticker. If you have issues with bubbles, a sharp hobby knife can pierce them without marring the sticker or piece.

@ABaumstumpf while decals are very different from stickers, you're wrong. Most gundam models in the Real Grade (RG) and Master Grade (MG) have stickers as the default. You can often get decal sheets for a goven kit, but those are optional and separate from the kit. Some MG kits have decals by default, but most MG and all (afaik) RG have stickers.

@@patrickdix772 It is some time ago that i last go mech-figures - but decals are no longer the norm for gundem? Did they really drop that much in quality? Only the cheap "click-together" toys had stickers.

Imo the worst stickers were the 24 reflective silver stickers that were applied on the concave interior of the cargo bay doors (12 stickers per door) of the NASA Discovery Shuttle set. Apart from that, the set is absolutely amazing.

Totally agree with you, I had such a hard time getting those on and looking good. In fact, I had to ask Lego to send me another sticker sheet because I messed up a few. Not an enjoyable experience. The rest of the model though is awesome.

Tiny turbo is the only theme I'm okay with stickers, and it NEEDS to come back

I actually prefer smaller stickers to big ones, because with the help of a pair of tweezers, they're actually very easy to apply, while the larger ones are quite cumbersome, and you have to use your fingers, since they'll just flex down and stick to themselves if you use tweezers.

True, Bigger stickers have the risk of bubbles or creases forming.

The biggest problem: The stickers age quickly and will come off. Then the set with hundreds of stickers is almost lost.

The biggest problem: People keep paying for this atrocity - dispite endless videos complaining about it. And prices keep rising .... Lego won't stop it as long as they save 1 cent on every set or whatever. But I guess since we can say "They even did it in 1985", why are we still complaining? Now it is "tradition" :p

I just found 2 sets very similar to the one at 3:33. 40+ year old DB stickers still holding up under lego box conditions. Unfortunately the red/yellow warning stickers round the base have been damaged.

With the Maersk Triple E, It took just as long to apply the stickers to the containers as it did to build

Oh good lord yes. I built that one as well and it's just so frustrating to keep putting those on and making sure they go on straight.

Lego should get rid of stickers and just use prints for details on bricks, flats etc. instead.

I agree. LEGO claims that it saves on costs, but I think I speak for most when I say that I would be willing to pay a bit more for printed bricks as opposed to stickers.

Nothing better than popping open a halo Mega set or Cobi set and seeing all the nice printed details lol

i recently bought and assembled my first two lego sets in probably twenty years, a couple small minecraft sets. i was impressed by how unique some of the pieces were, with unique molds and prints. i totally forgot stickers were a thing lego does 😲

You didn't mention that many of the stickers on the old train set were alternative ones to pick from for the logos, amazingly they included different options for the logos of various different countries' railway companies.

I’m always interested in this topic, since I build Gunpla (Gundam model kits) stickers aren’t usually that big a deal for me, especially because Lego pieces are flat, instead of odd surfaces

i love stickers actually. sure printed bricks are nice, but i like customization.

C'mon. Supplying optional stickers for different teams, companies, liveries etc is hardly an issue to complain about. Numbers of stickers that are intended to be applied is the only sane metric, and weighting that by number of pieces per set (a simple "stickerosity = pieces/stickers", or P/S units) would make more sense of it all.

2:39, the train stickers are not meant to be all used up. You choose which train company you want the model to belong to. For example, "DB" means German Railroad. Do your homework before throwing criticism.

The 3404 set might also be considered as a set with an interesting mistake. The stickers include flags of Austria, Germany, Poland, Russia and the great country of Czech Republic (yes I am Czech) but the box shows flags of Austria, Poland, Czech Republic and for some reason BELGIUM and the NETHERLANDS (looks like a mistake because of the similarity of those other two flags).

I remember those buses when they came out. Considered even getting a few as cheap stock minifig packs. They never advertised that they had flag stickers and which one had which countries in catalogue.

I noticed last year that on my Ninjago City and Docks, the stickers are starting to peel off. They were only on Display, didnt mess around with them putting them on and they didnt get wet or anything… Since then I stopped using the stickers on my sets and its way better, always hated putting them on and most of them dont even match the colour of the pieces anymore. I recommed everyone to do the same, many sets look good without them.

It’s often the licensing fees in current times. Printing costs waaay more on licensed themes hence the $40 Star Wars 4+ sets.

Something pretty critical you left out is that on sets like the train or the soccer one, most of the stickers are 'interchangeable' so to speak, as in they include way more stickers than you need to offer customisation, they dont do this much anymore but I remember getting a police helicopter as a kid with 2 sticker sheets, one in english and one in dutch for the police stickers, you only use the set you need

That's a bit unfair on 7740. You weren't expected to apply all the stickers - they were duplicates for different countries.

The major differentiating feature of Lego is that for over 50 years parts have been universally inter-connectable. They continue through a phase that their kits introduce and ever broadening set of specialized shapes - cool when it offers new flexibility (like transitioning from one orientation to another) - but not cool when it is a piece that is a thing (a dinosaur head, tail, leg). These stickers do the same thing taking away that creative element.

I loved the Tiny Turbos line, but man, those tiny stickers.

Stickers themselves are not that bad. What I absolutely despise, however, are stickers that should be the size of a piece but aren't. Case in point I meticulously set the edge of the sticker on the edge of the cockpit of the Indiana Jones plane set, everything was perfect.... and then it turned out I was missing around one stud worth of sticker on the other side. Everything was perfect. The edges were perfectly parallel, but the sticker was meant to start like 3mm away from the edge of the piece. Which I guess I should have somehow known??? Couldn't even lay it the other way to center it, because the cockpit glass is cylindrical.

Agreed. I had a similar experience with the 75312 Slave 1, which, looks incredible for its smaller size. There are two stickers that go on the front pieces, which are curved. Placing stickers that are smaller than the surface they're meant to go on is bad enough but when they curve around a semi-circle I had no shot of being able to eyeball them to be perfectly in the middle. Ones good but the other is off by about 2mm. just enough to be irritating.

Stickers are an absolutely lazy move by Lego. The best is when you find the sticker sets folded. If they’re going to continue, then they need to cut the sheets to fit inside the instructions

I wouldn’t mind if the stickers were on thicker stock. The cheap Lego stickers are on thin stock and flake away over time and age. Playmobil stickers are perfect

the sticker sheets for the speed champions set 75889 Ferrari Ultimate Garage where a real pain due to the size of them. Considering how much LEGO charge and make off sets these days you'd think that they would do more printed bricks rather than doing stickers.

I had the Grand Championship Cup set. I remember begging my mom to take me to Toys R Us to get it. I also had severe OCD involving stickers at the time. I'm pretty sure I gave up soon after the advertisements. I still remember peeling the minifig stickers off and trying to get them perfectly on the figures, which was also part of my OCD, all while dealing with the OCD of not wanting to touch the stickers. I'll never forget how pissed I was when I saw the pages of stickers after wondering why the torsos were plain.

And this is why we as Lego fans love printed pieces XD

as someone who has built almost every speed champion set and has built a total of around 80 sets. The stickers are by far the the worst part about legos. The new concord set has 0 stickers and it is all printed on the bricks, I really hope that is going to be the way of the future for Lego.

Wish LEGO will totally abandon stickers, many of us really don't like it.

Since 2021/2, Cobi only has printed-on bricks. And they are MUCH higher quality than Lego's.

In the intercity defence, a lot of stickers are different train companies that you could decide, not use all of them

I remember I had the LEGO Racers RX-Sprinter set as a kid (set 8655, from 2005), and the main sponsor-styled sticker on the windshield covered four individual bricks, which I thought was ridiculous (and still do). Fast forward about ten years, and all of the stickers from that set started to flake apart like flakey old outdoor house paint, and I had never even dismantled that set the entire time I owned it, I just pulled it out of the box one day, and found that the stickers were crumbling and making a complete mess everywhere, due to (what I assume to be) them reaching their expiry date, with whatever it was they were using to make those particular stickers at the time. Due to those two issues surrounding that one single set, I've had a pretty negative outlook on stickers for LEGO sets. I also, for the life of me, cannot place a sticker straight. Everytime I think I've got it, it somehow ends up crooked at the final stage of the application lol.

0:01 whats worse is that we know they can just print the designs on the bricks, because some sets have the designs printed on the pieces, Example: Shadow’s Escape (76995)

IMHO, the stickers for Diagon Alley are way worse. It's a collector's set, meant to be displayed and cherished. Instead, most of the details related to HP are done via stickers, which look way worse than prints.

@@brilliantdog To add to my previous reply: last year, I looked through our attic and found some old "toys" of mine, including the Lego Red Baron plane and old Playmobil stuff. The Playmobil stuff looked as good as new, all the prints were in great condition, even their stickers looked fine. The Red Baron however - the stickers were brittle and discoloured and peeled off as soon as they were touched. It's only a few cents difference for Lego, but it makes such a huge difference for collectors in the long run.

I grew up with tiny turbos and my first lego set was one of those team busses.

Just build the Concorde and was surprised to not see any stickers. Why can't they do this for all sets??

They did do stickered mini figs again. I loved the Scuderia Ferrari truck from the mid 2000’s but I despised that every figure had front and back stickers. They didn’t age well especially after a bunch of play

My issue with stickers really isnt that they use overuse them, it's that they are a pain to apply, and hard to get more of/replacements That said I'd prefer more printed parts. As time goes on and all my stickers peel off.

I love applying stickers. The more the better.

The intercity train is excused by having optional logos for every TEE founding-nation's railway for a train with TEE livery. Its sort of a train enthusiast's dream lego set, sure those wd prefer waterslides over stickers, but cant win em all.

I keep all my sticker sheets with the intent of reselling or trading. I only like printing. I heavily focus mocs for 90s space so buying modern sets are mostly just for parts. Rare pieces, minifigs, stickers all get sold/traded for stuff I want.

Its fun getting the huge Goodwill boxes of lego, I found like 20 general categories, until you get to tecnics, a monster castle is a technics. You just have these huge obnoxious pieces. If you just leave them in a category, might as well throw in the race car car inset square seat, its gone forever, a scientist couldn't remove it.

I remember back in the 1980s, where lego didn't have stickers, the type of things you get on stickers now would have been printed directly on the lego bricks.

Gunpla and other non-lego models have used stickers or decals forever. This just sounds like a lot of whining for special treatment while not realizing it just inflates the cost of the models.

What is about LEGO Xtra 853921 Sticker Sheets? It counts around 210-215 stickers. It also contains some pieces (~10-20), so I would consider it as a set.

I’ll always remember the old stickers that forced pieces to be stuck together. Like the first Maersk set in this vid that keeps the plates and tiles together, or that Spongebob driving school set with the wall labeled “WALL” that kept like twenty bricks/plates together

I still have my Legos from the early 80s. All the prints on space computers are still on there. The stickers on my yellow castle set are all frayed.
