Lego EV3 Ball Launcher (Single motor, Variable power)

In the GEARS simulator (gears.aposteriori.com.sg), we have a paintball launcher that works using a single motor. Turning it in reverse winds up the spring, and turning it forward launches the paintball. The more you wind it back, the higher the launch velocity.
This ball launcher was made to show that it is possible to build a real physical device that works in the same way. It's only meant to be a proof of concept, and performs quite poorly, but it works the same way as the virtual paintball launcher. Turning the medium motor in reverse pulls the rack back, stretching the rubber bands. When the motor is turned forward, a rachet mechanism forces the pinion to disengage from the rack, allowing the rack to shoot forward and launch the ball.

Hello, I am very interested to your Construction. As part of a project in the university it is my and partner group task to build a ball launcher. Your idea looks very effective. However, I do not understand everything. Could you explain me how the shooting mechanism works. Especially the moment of shooting. I can see in your video some additional stripes on the opposite side but I do not know the position.Unfortunately your instruction on your website didn't help me. If you're referring to the rubber bands on the opposite side, there is one set that pulls the gear upwards to engage with the rack, and another one that rotates the pawl so that it presses against the pinion. I don't have any more videos or photos. Sorry. I should caution you that the launcher was built to prove that you can build a launcher with variable launch power using only a single motor. It works, but very poorly; the ball can't travel more than a few cm. You're probably gonna want something better for your university project.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep the launcher; it was dismantled right after recording the video. There's a little more details in the blog post, but not by much.
