Here in Europe (ebay) the price of the set droped under 400 Euro right after the first rumors popped up about a new castle a couple months ago.. in germany you could see the set trending around 360 Euro ever since , today the first ones are listed at around 320. I guess one "problem" are the countless channels like yours ( don´t get me wrong i really love your channel !) that promote reselling and investing , that is creating a hole market of its own for Lego.I think without big effort Lego can study that "market" and gain a lot out of it, yes it sounds like conspiracy, but I think a successful company ( and Lego is a very big one) is of course studing the market including reselling market why yould they rerelease more and more sets otherwise ?

There were rumors/speculation of Lego potentially offering a subscription-style service that would let people buy retired sets with .pdf manuals. Haven't heard more about that, but you can bet they have their bean counters analyzing the secondary market, especially as Lego reselling becomes the trend du jour. My suspicion is that Lego investing is in a bubble right now, and as people hop on the bandwagon looking for a quick, huge return, they'll soon realize it's not nearly that simple or easy and drop back out of the market, reducing the current glut of retired sets for sale that are pushing prices down.

This is very true! The LEGO investing hobby has certainly grown over the last few years! And LEGO is smart. And hey maybe they are watching my videos and others. But LEGO is a multi billion dollar company who is very smart and they knew that the Disney Castle was one of the best sets they every made so they made another one and it will sell well. LEGO will certainly keep remaking sets which makes investing slightly risky. But until LEGO investing becomes completely inadequate I will keep talking about it.

Jake - EXCELLENT content choice! What a great reminder of the complexities and risks of LEGO investing. Also, a good reminder that when you pick a great set for investing, it’s not a matter of if, but when will it be a good investment. I’m confident, as you, that this original castle will deliver good returns, but it will take a bit longer. I went in light on this one for fear of a re-release and will likely try and liquidate, hopefully near break even, and move on; otherwise, I can hold and see a decent return in another year or so. Thx again for PREMIUM LEGO content as always.

The signs that this original Disney castle was not going to be a good investment set were available in 2022. 1) this year is the 100th anniversary for Disney, and it made no sense to retire the old castle in the year before the anniversary. 2) lego have form for retiring and rereleasing some big sets - taj, Death Star and now Disney castle. 3) lego have publicly stated they will have some evergreen sets which will from time to time be updated. 4) many investors picked up a copy of the older Disney castle meaning it would have unlikely appreciated so sharply in the after market. 5) disney and Lego are in this game for $$$ and never forget that. If they are able to get your bucks then expect to see sets on shelves for longer and rereleased as long as they get your hard earned cash.

All true! The only thing I disagree with is this set would have exploded in value if we had not gotten a re release! Sure many collectors and investors picked up a copy or two but the original price jumped was significant! But here we are and yea LEGO will always do what they can to make the most money. No set is safe from an update or re release! Thanks for the comment

The new one is going to be an incredible sand blue and light nougat parts pack. And I heard the Disney 100 box art is only around for a short time before they remove that logo. So their might be a “first edition” type market for this set

I myself think in the long term 71040 it will do well, cause i agree some collectors will more then likely want both castles. I know i would want both, so i could have them dispalyed side by side.

Regarding the minifigures in the 71040 set, Donald was not an original, Daisy and Minnie look similar if not exactly like the ones that I have in the Disney Train set, and Tinkerbell is now in the new Peter Pan set (again, don't know if they're exactly alike). There are enough differences in the castle colors and build, and certainly there are many differences in the items in the back of each castle. While I don't have 71040 but will be buying 43222, I think that those of you that have 71040 can make an argument that there are enough differences where some buyers could want the original castle.

Love these thoughts! And yes I believe Donald was in the Disney CMF series. Technically the other figs are still unique but I’m curious if the tinker bell in the new Peter Pan set will be the exact same fig? We will see!

Nice comparison with deathstar situation. But it's only a matter of time to see on shelves another new deathstar set. It's too iconic. So... time to clear your inventory 😁 Risk is only higher each year.

I think 71040 is for collection purposes but not for investing, I would think to sell it asap if you have more than one set coz the ROI is not looking very good.

What I’m not seeing much mention of is that the 71040 is based on the classic colour scheme of the castle, whereas the new one is based on the current design that debuted for Magic Kingdom’s 50th anniversary. There was a significant amount of controversy and debate surrounding the castle being painted “more pink”, so it seems logical to me that the the models will eventually reach a point when they’re equally coveted. Some Disney fans will desire the classic coloured castle for nostalgia, while others will want the modern style for the added “pop”. Personally, I’m unsure which I like better but I’m in the lucky position of having not yet opened and built my older set, so I’m leaning toward that one being kept as is for a long term investment. 🤞🏻 PS: One more thought… If Disney decides to return the castle in Florida to its older colours once the years-long celebrations are over, we could find the new set dates more than people might expect. That could put the 71040 in a unique position.

Yeah this is why I'm not immediately saying I'm going to sell my old one and buy the new one (as a collector). The new one looks awesome but I love the colours of the old one. The new one's colours look good too but the contrast of colours is better on the old IMO

Many months later, sold a couple. Still dont know what to do with a couple of these badboys I have left. Pricre is slowly comining back to ROI. But dont expect a rocket climb after this new release. Though I noticed there are some fanatics who want this older set per se. Probably keep 1 and sell the others for re-investing

I think the 5 minifigures on the old set are more popular and those are the primary ones I remember being at the actual castle in Disney World when I visited. I’ll take 71040 any day over the newer one

I think if the 71040 castle did not retire then it would have got a price hike up to $400 and then it would have been the same price as the new castle. Also, my dilemma is I have the 70140 set sealed in the box brand new and i was saving it to build it when I have more space. But now that this new castle is coming out I really don't know if I should hold on to the 70140 or sell it and use the money to buy the brand new castle for my collection. I don't think I need both castles. What would you do?? Would you sell the 70140 and buy the 43222 or would you keep the 70140 and hold off on buying the new 43222?

Hi, great video. When you presented the upcoming castle, I immediately thought of Sleeping Beauty's Castle which is in Disneyland. However, you stated and are correct that this is Cindrella's Castle. Since Castel is pretty much Disney's trademark. The reason I mention this is for the collectors of Lego and Disney. This new set can easily be transformed into Sleepy Beauty Castle, (well maybe not easy). Now collectors can showcase both castles and have all the exclusive minifigures, at least that's my rationale.

I like that thought but I would imagine over the next several years LEGO might release different versions of the castles from different parks and other movies… we will see 🤷‍♂️

Don’t think people should offload this just yet as it’s a completely different subject matter (in a way) vs the new one. It’s not like the Taj Mahal which was pretty much a like for like rerelease. Same as the Death Star. That was like for like. This original castle will do just fine.

Different enough fir what though? As a collector we will already own the first version & wont buy the 2nd. Basically no one will pay for another version with a different paint touch up. So that means only new collectors will buy the new version & who is then left to want to buy the 1st one? I still just don’t understand why Lego did this version & I will be shocked if investors make much from the 1st. You may get some super hardcore people to source the figures but that’s it. Really disappointed Lego went this route

I stayed away from the Disney castle as the risk was too high for a new castle to be released. Think about it, the Disney castle is the flagship, it's like an UCS X-wing in Star Wars. Chances are really high for re-releases etc.

Hey Jake. Well, it happened. I was holding out hope, as you were I think, that the new castle would be a different princess castle. Thankfully, I only have one set that I invested in, so not a huge issue. Will have to play it by ear whether I cut my loses now or hold on to it. Really feel for anybody who has 10 plus of them. That’s a lot of money hung up in it. I look forward to your next top 10 sets to invest in as we approach the end of the year. Cheers, Michael

For my personal collection, I much prefer the original set and colors. The new colors give me a headache, so I would choose the original (prefer the original colors on the actual castle at WDW too). I do not think I am alone, so they will sell. But with the new one available, not for crazy prices while there is another version on the shelves. In a few years, WDW could bring back the original colors too. Will say I am not alone in prefering the original castle colors and not loving the new colors, so choosing the new castle is not a foregone conclusion. Ie, if there was a birthday cake lego version of the WDW castle now (version from an earlier anniversary) I do not think many would want it; the current anniversary colors are not as bad, but the classic colors are still desirable and especially if WDW changes the colors back after the anniversary hype. Fwiw I follow the WDW channels and forums too. One more thing, WDW popularity declined a bit in part due to many unpopular park changes after covid, and the current anniversary colors were one of the changes that came about during this decline so there’s that too.

I know you say there is a ton of risk to Lego investing, but would you agree that there isn’t a ls much rush to lose a ton of money in it? Compared to investing in stocks you could easily make a bad investment and lose 90% of your money. I’m very new to Lego and from what I can tell so far is that if you sit on sets for at least a year or so you should be able to at least sell for what you bought it for minus fees/shipping. Correct me if I’m wrong please since I am so new to this. My wife and I just made our first investment by buying about $1200 worth of Lego all at discounts from Walmart. All sets we got were a part of your 2023 Lego Star Wars video and you graded each at a B+ or higher. So I’m very excited to see what our return will be especially since we got in at 30-40% under MSRP.

This is true! If you are able to find sets on discount similar to ones you did you typically won't lost money. You will at least break even and it sounds like you picked up some good sets. I would say the stock market is much more volatile

I purchased only one 71040 for myself to build. Initially regretted that I didn’t purchase more for investment, but now I am happy that I didn’t. Will purchase the new one and will display them together. I like the new one slightly better, but I am definitely not ready to part with 71040. It has its own charm. For example, I really like the 2 knight mini figurines in the old one.

the 10198 certainly lost value when the new one came out... but it has slowly climbed back up since the 75244 retired. Not back to its original height but it is getting there.
