I'll do you one better. Gift a region to Suebi and become their friends. If you become their ally, Alamans start liking you, and then they can be your ally too. Boom, two threats dealt with. Suebi can always be wiped off later. If you can get trade agreements with the African nations, you're pretty much safe. If not, send the Legions from Africa and Spain to neutralize them and never worry about that front again. I used to always abandon Britain but I found that if you manually fight the Celts their units have no armour and drop like flies to missiles. Invaders from sea can easily be stopped by spamming ramming ships

Playing as the western Roman Empire on hard difficulty was and still is an experience and I did something very wild. I abandoned almost every single settlement except for the ones in Italia and some bordering ones to the north of it and I just stayed with those developing them and defending them and I gotta say it’s been going great and fighting the barbarian hordes on hard difficulty gives an almost apocalyptic feeling which just makes every victory that much sweeter. Truly incredible and really makes me feel like a defender of the Roman people against the numerous barbarian hordes trying to watch Rome burn.

the irony of this period is; the roman legions were almost entirely manned by Germanic peoples. Romans, once the only peoples allowed to serve in the legions, had grown soft and decadent. There , of course Dacians and Illyrians too who do the fighting duties, but, especially in the west, it was mainly Germanic peoples. For me - and I've played EVERY SINGLE TotalWar game- Atilla is the best. its such a shame it didn't too that well. And the sound track...just wow.

Only the Western Roman Empire really, they were under much more pressure from germanic tribes, too many incompetent leaders, as you said overreliance on Barbarian Mercenaries, less Urbanization compared to the Eastern half of the Empire and also less trade income as a consequence. The Exception was probably Italy which was still pretty rich. Also in the past there were apparently many mines in the West during the time of Augustus and the first two centuries afterwards, but they started drying up further reducing wealth and ability to fund armies.

@@TheMoorgoth Good points, but In addition to Italy, there was also gallo Rome too, was very rich and urbanised. Paris, Avignon ect. And also the east was under a fair amount of pressure from the goths and migratory Turkic tribes, forcinng various reforms and culminating eventually to being overrun by them later on. But yeh, guess they were more urbanised they did alot of massive city's at that time, like Alexandria and Antioch and of course Constantinople, that dwarfed many of the city's in the West like Paris and Rome. Also the byzantines lands stretched into the east, and were menaced by Arabs, and persions and berbers in the south. I think the east also shoved these barbarians, as much as possible westwards as a matter of policy. But don't forget the germinc barbarians ravaged the eastern Roman empire also, especially the Balkans and Greece.

Only a statesman of the caliber of Octavianus or a general of the caliber of Caesar could really have improved the situation (and even a Caesar would probably have only been able to delay the inevitable). Stilicho managed to do just that, until his execution. Honorius was not capable enough by a long shot, but he was by far not the biggest glue sniffer to wear the imperial wreath.

I'm running it with Latin Christianity atm for the challenge myself - but I will definitely try out Graeco-Roman paganism the next WRE run! Btw, late reply, I know. I think you just have to demolish the churches etc. and just let the populace convert themselves back to Graeco-Roman Paganism, because your faction starts about like 28% pagan. When that reaches 35%, one gets the option to change their state religion. Regional boosts like those in Italia and Magna Graecia and 'local traditions' definitely help. Edit: Also Theatres or similar buildings have their own Influence bonuses to Graeco-Roman Paganism, forgot to mention that haha

+White Moon +Volcano4981 Watch out for the tech tree. You can build circuses and theatres, and they increase the pagan influence. Demolish all churches and you'll be pagan yet. But again, watch out for the tech tree. Some techs give you the ability to build better latin churches, but remove your ability to build old roman buildings. For instance, if you reasearch how to build a level 3(?) latin church, you lose the ability to build aqueducts. This happens even if you're pagan.

Same. As the heroes of yore once did, we too shall conquer all the world with their gods at our back. I managed to do everything but bring the Eastern Empire to kneel - they expanded far faster than I could between the Danes and the Vandals pillaging everything. The sons of Constantine eventually fell to the Sassanids, though... then we died.

@@ethanattenborough1197 I can't speak for others but I can guess. Rome destroyed entire cultures that it defeated violently. Not much is known about Gaul and even today the people of France, Northern Italy and Belgium all only have vague ancestral links to Gaul. Julius Caeser killed a 5th of all Gaul people in his conquest and another 5th were taken as slaves. Hundreds of clans and nearly a thousand cities were completely destroyed. The Republic elected an Emperor and even today continue to exist as a symbol of nationalism. Rome is at equal parts impressive as it is dangerous.
