@@ellieborla9243 No, Tristan wasn't melancholic. He had an inner conflict because of how Samuel died. I understand people want to relate but in this case your neuroticism is just a part of your character... Tristan never exhibited any signs of depression or melancholy prior to Samuel's death...and he was already over it once he met the grown-up Isabel.

I'm thinking Tristan didn't want his marriage to be like his parents he said that they loved the idea of each other. His dad wanted somethings like living out in the wild & away from civilization especially the govt. And his mom wanted to live among society, having mindless chatter & gossip, she hated living out in the middle of nowhere around the bears. as One Stab said "She was strange woman anyway" lol he would never say that to daddy Ludlow out loud. Quite true Isabel did know Tristan better she grew up with him Susannah didn't she wanted what he couldn't & wouldn't give her. He never professed his love for her, he just tolerated her he felt bad that Alfred left him because he couldn't stomach seeing Susannah & Tristan together. Had Susannah bent sent back to Boston Alfred would've likely stuck around longer or he would've went to Boston to be with Susannah (Which would've been a mistake on his part).

Will always remember the scene where she gets shot. It was so sad. And the way Brad Pitt twisted his face around so much, I could really sense the anguish in Tristan; it's so real & raw looking. Like a real trauma reaction can be.

I was sad that she loved him when she was a child and when he came back he felt something for her and married her. But then after she was killed. he then wanted his brother's wife again because he actually loved her far longer than he did his own wife. To me that's the sadest because to me it says his own wife was his second choice while she always chose him as her first while his brother's wife couldn't choose between anyone (she kills her self because she couldn't choose which one she actually wanted to be with and so because Tristan and his brother finally had enough so instead of accepting it she takes her life leaving her own husband as a widow)

@@mistyross8831 Did we watch the same movie? If he loved Susanna he would have married her from the get go, not Isabel 2. Did you not see that scene where Susanna (who did not respect that his wife had barely died a few hours ago), basically threw herself at Tristan while he was in jail only for him to reject her? “Go back to Alfred.” A man who loves a woman is never going to tell her to go back to his brother. Which is why she killed herself. Even at the funeral you can see it was Alfred who was torn apart, not Tristan. Watch the scene where Isabel 2 is killed and how he reacts and compare it to when he finds out Susanna has committed suicide, goes to her funeral and is pretty calm and collected. He DIDN’T love her. He never did. When a man loves a woman he does not use her and reject her the way Tristan did to Susanna. It surprises me how you all jump through hoops and can’t see the obvious, which is sadly why a lot women stay in toxic relationships when it’s obvious the man doesn’t love them. Then they are heartbroken when they see him give the next woman everything he didn’t give them. It was Isabel 2 he loved. It was Isabel 2 he married, it was Isabel 2 he mourned, it was Isabel 2 he avenged. ISABEL 2 was the woman he loved, NOT Susanna.

I liked her too it's just the moment she saw Tristan she already felt like she was engaged to the wrong brother. She was already cheating on Sam then she didn't waste time moving in on Tristan only she picked the wrong time to do it. She thought she found her happily ever after, too bad Tristan was suffering mentally & couldn't as well as wouldn't give her what she wanted. She even tried to baby trap him into staying with her at the ranch when he was planning to leave. When she said "I can make it better for you" Tristan "How?" Susannah "If we had a child or if I were pregnant would you still be going?" And Tristan looks at her like she had lost her mind to which he quietly says "Yes" She starts to get upset & desperate "Just give me a chance" & Tristan says "Don't do that." He was going to leave no matter what & in case Susannah had forgotten he almost stabbed her when she touched him in his sleep Tristan was still haunted by the war & Sammy. Then when the man she wanted didn't want her anymore what does she do? Instead of getting out of his life for good she goes & hooks up with his brother whom she doesn't have feelings & whom she doesn't love just to keep herself in Tristan's life. I'm guessing in her mind Susannah felt her life was screwed either way whether she goes back to Boston & marry a Mr. Nice Guy & settling down in a nice society or marrying another Mr. Nice Guy who's acquired money, power, connections but is still connected to the life she really wanted living out in the wild with a man who isn't playing by the rules. A place she felt she could be free to express herself but now she's put herself in a place where she feels unhappy & confined especially as a woman. As we can see in Alfred's world Susannah isn't very happy at all she's just going with it quite frankly it's her own fault she didn't have to go find Alfred she trapped herself into the life she had with him. I also think Susannah is unable to have kids because she said in a letter that she & Alfred tried to have kids but couldn't so I think Susannah is barren which is why she was so heartbroken when she sees Isabel 2 with the man & life she wanted. Isabel doesn't rub it in Susannah's face she can see how crushed & envious Susannah is but like I said nobody put a gun to Susannah's head & told her to marry Alfred.

What makes this a good movie is that despite their flaws, you truly feel for all the main characters. Alfred, probably the best of his brothers, is responsible and cautious but insists on being with a woman who'll never love him the way he loves her. Tristan is wild, impestous and independent, which is why everyone is drawn to him but unwittingly also causes so much collateral damage around him. Samuel is sweet but naive about the world, which leads his life tragically to be cut short. Susannah is beautiful and cultured but has a passionate side. She doesn't try to cause drama but circumstances beyond her control make it almost inevitable. Her inability to let go of a life with Tristan, who brings out her passionate side, causes her life to be cut short as well.

Beautiful movie. I rewatched it recently, in my 40’s, after not watching it since I was maybe 19 or 20. I interpreted it differently now, as we do with age. Isabelle-2 brought him (much needed) peace, and they had a very simple love. But I don’t believe it was the same love as with Suzanne. I felt badly for Suzanne, waiting all those years for him. She only let go when he wrote her that he didn’t love her anymore and told her to move on. How could he have returned to expect her still there after that? So much heartbreak in this movie.

I think Isabel Two was a good spouse for Tristan. Isabel knew how to read people & situations. She knew how to approach people & when to step back. Susanna, unfortunately, seemed more obsessed with Tristan than in love. Susanna was very delusional about her relationship with Tristan. What annoyed me the most with Susanna is that she ignored Tristan's grief. It's one thing to not know how to console a grieving person. It's another thing when you don't acknowledge their pain. Susanna constantly hovered over Tristan rambling about their non-existent future. Not one time did Susanna ever ask Tristan about his feelings regarding Samuel's death. Nor give him encouragement regarding his guilt over Samuel's death.

No matter what, Tristan should have apologized to Susannah the moment he returned home. She had such a sad, lonely, and tragic life. 😢 It’s so unfair. Both her parents died, her first fiancée died in the war (even if she didn’t love him deeply, she obviously cared about him), her true love leaves her, she marries a man she doesn’t love, and then she discovers she can’t conceive. When the love of her life returns, he does not apologize or give her any closure. Tristan almost make things worse honestly. After all that, Susannah then has to witness Isabel 2 (who has an entire loving family plus more) experience all the happiness she’d always dreamed of. It’s so, so heartbreaking. I do think Tristan and Isabel suit each other better, and loving Susannah was too difficult for Tristan because of her connection to Samuel. It just always bothered me how unlucky her life seemed to be and she didn’t deserve any of it. 😢💔

Tristian was a force of nature , a mixture of sensitivity and wildness. Susannah was attracted to this but Tristian should have kept his distance but instead he moved in on his brothers fiancee. Then the younger brother dies and all the guilt builds up for Tristan around Susannah and his younger brother. Marrying Isabella was marrying back into innocence but ultimately he did not take the gang threats seriously even though he was married and had two children. He was ultimately a very selfish person whose presence called suffering in so many directions. He was like ' hi, I'm so wild and free I can't be held responsible for anyone except my own desires/feelings. If you met him in real life - he would be a one night stand and move on. Not the kind of guy you could build a life with. Susannah having been left on her own in life after her parents died , unfortunately was hanging onto this family as a substitute for her own when she would have been better to have moved on. Alfred who was like his mum preferring town life to wild life , should have married Susannah and moved far away from Tristian and his family if he loved her . Staying too close to all the emotional drama and history was a recipe for disaster which is what followed. Painful movie to watch .

Tristan needed to bring back Samuel in the most innocent form. Susannah was broken like him and together they had strong waves of energy but it couldn’t reach an equilibrium to build a home. Seeing Susannah reminded Tristan of the Samuel that was politically charged and fresh out of school instead of the innocent younger brother. Isabel was the innocence that he needed to rewind hard years and remember the youthful days on the ranch. He enjoyed breaking the law with her father and her parents were an example of what they would become which is what Tristan ultimately wanted. Isabel was educated the way Tristan wanted his children educated and she was willing to fight for her man which is what he needed because his mother didn’t fight for the love with his father. When Tristan was traveling, he made peace with the darkness and felt as though he paid enough of his guilt debt that he could begin again. With time, Alfred would have reconciled with his father and Susannah would’ve come to terms that she was meant to be with Alfred and Tristan was meant to be with Isabel. However, when government officials murdered his wife, the evolution of his hatred towards centralized powers was complete and he became his father. This is the legend of the fall of man.

Susannah was a classy, high quality, educated woman far superior to Tristan whose main qualities were good looks and his “wild” side. She followed her heart and went for what she wanted with all she had. Her story is truly heartbreaking. Just rewatched this movie recently and was so taken aback by how differently I reacted to This relationship. On first watch it felt like they were fated. Now I watch and I feel like she was just at the right place at the right time when Tristan was ready to settle down. Plus the fact that she’s first introduced as a child and is a teenager still when they marry. I slid the sideye to it this time. I think he loved Susannah and just couldn’t get past his own demons. he didn’t think he was good enough for her and felt great guilt over Samuel but she was his soulmate. Sad tragic heartbreaking story of three brothers in love with the same woman.

I have seen the film multiple times, and have a slightly different interpretation. Yes, I think they were fated to be together, Isabel 2 stated she would marry Tristan as a child. Now, I also agree that Isabel 2 was in the right place at the right time, I believe that Tristan had to go through so much in order to get past his demons(first with Susannah, realizing she really couldn't be the support he needed and he had to work through his demons on his own), all this allowed for him to be in a place where he could love and accept the love that Isabel had to offer him. Isabel, unlike Susannah, loved Tristan for who he was(and would truly wait forever for him to get himself together) and didn't have to change herself in order to compliment him as a life partner. Susannah, had this romantic idea of who Tristan was and never really appreciated or got beyond this pre-war ideal of who he was and Tristan knew that she would have to change/sacrifice herself for a life with him and would end up resenting him or leaving(in a similar way that his mother abandoned him and his father which had affected him deeply). Anyway, I am not a huge fan of Susannah's choice to end her life, I would have preferred that Isabel 2's death and seeing Tristans love for her would have allowed her to let go and open herself to the love Alfred had for her and in the end she and Alfred would raise Tristans children when he had to go on the run, I thought that would have been so much more satifisfying and ending for her.

My favorie movies are the ones about unrequited love. You just want them to have a perfect life together and they never do. When the young brother died, Susanna should have married the eldest brother. He was stable minded, he loved her and was career oriented. She fell for the wild one, in which she would never have a future, and Tristan just used her. No one ends up happy but you keep rooting for them all to be happy.

Susannah was not entirely to blame in her relationship with Tristan. Romances take two hands to clap. If he did not care for her at all, why encourage a relationship? Unless he lusted after her rather than loved her. Then when he lost interest in her, he just wrote off their relationship and basically told her to get lost. Instead, he got married to a woman young enough to be his daughter. And that woman seemed to have fixated on him since she was like 5 or 6 years old saying that she would marry him. What does a girl of that age know about things like love and marriage? And he claims that he is in love with her. Funny, he can't love a grown woman but he can fall for someone half his age. I doubt Tristan really loved anyone in his family, except maybe his father. Notice how often he goes running away from home whenever things go south. Then he comes back and just gets married? Makes no sense to me.

I'm grossed out by all the romanticizing comments. She was a child when they were introduced, and he was a grown man. He got to know her as a child. And then he marries her when she's a teenager. Gross. Even as a teenager myself watching this for the first time, I reacted to that. It made me very uncomfortable and I lost all respect and admiration for the character Tristan. Those of you who are ignoring this fact and romanticize their relationship - you're effed up. For real.

Why does everyone blame Sussanah for this? She was so young with no parents to guide her.
