Underrated season for Peyton Manning that year. Missed all of training camp to recover from knee surgery but still made it in time to start the season. After getting off to a rocky 3-4 start they won nine straight to finish 12-4 with Manning winning MVP and had it not been for Tennessee's fluke year of starting 10-0 and finishing 13-3 they would've maintained their long streak of winning their division.

14:06-14:15 - One of the best play designs you’ll ever see in your life. Here’s what the Colts did: Peyton did a play-action fake to Rhodes, who jogs to the outside, while Peyton looks the other way. Polamalu, arguably the best safety at the time completely buys it, and as soon as Peyton pumps, Rhodes sprints to the end zone for a touchdown. Beautiful execution.

Definitely a highlight moment of the 08 Colts season, beating the eventual SB champs. Since both teams finished 12-4 the Colts would have had the tie breaker except that Pittsburgh won their division and the Colts were a wild card. To this day, I remember that Melvin Bullitt interception to close the game. If you watch that deflection on the hail mary, I'm pretty sure Dallas Baker catches it for a game winning TD if Bullitt doesn't get it.

@@blakemedlock Eh, Manning is statistically superior in the regular and postseason. Manning was actually statistically better than Brady in the postseason and top 4 all time postseason if you adjust for the defenses they played. www.footballperspective.com/the-best-playoff-quarterbacks-in-the-super-bowl-era/ Here's a statistical analysis of playoff qbs. goes up to 2014. Factor in brady today and he goes from #11 to #5 but still slightly worse than manning. These are leverage adjusted as well, so bigger games get bigger weights. Here’s an updated version: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Fh_0uyy068Q3_rUgF3V3thfjcD5ZNEOL/edit#gid=225691749 But the story isn't over yet! You're probably thinking, "this is bogus, Brady wins WAY more". And that's true! But given that Manning has empirically performed better, I have to show you what this is due to. These statistics below show the support cast from the defense and special teams. It shows how Manning has gotten worse support overall, but not only that, his support was worst in his early career, which gave him the bad reputation to begin with. For example, through 2004, compared to Brady, Manning’s supporting cast averaged -14 points worth of support. www.footballperspective.com/guest-post-brady-vs-manning-and-playoff-support/ Here's regular season statistics for QBs, goes up to the end of the 2017 season, Manning leads Brady by a significant margin, and if updated, Brady still is significantly inferior. The metric used in this is TSP (Total Statistical Production) and it balances efficiency and volume. So longevity is a definite bonus, and efficiency is as well. If you play at a low level for a while, your TSP will be low. If you play at an extremely high level for only 2 years, it will also be low. www.footballperspective.com/best-statistical-qbs-hof-data-by-brad-oremland/ Here’s a different metric, accounting for all opposing defenses, moves Brady up a bit, but still worse than Manning. Brady’s better in the regular season than people think actually, he has had a stronger strength of schedule than most, I only compared the 2 players btw. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1z9O0r65aIaB1ctLpicITeEKTFOHFezVqnIxiepKqa1Q/edit#gid=0 Now that I have accounted for individual performance and defensive + special teams support, all that's left over is offensive support. So I’ll compare their offensive support. Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne actually had virtually no effect on his performance, believe it or not. Below are WOWY stats (with or without you). These are measured in adjusted net yards per attempt. For example, the average QB has about 5.3 adjusted net yards per attempt. Marvin's WOWY? 0. Reggie's WOWY? 0.2. That's nothing. What about Brady's receivers? Welker? WOWY of 1. Moss? WOWY of 1.1. Gronk? a WHOPPING 2.3. Here's the stats: www.footballperspective.com/receiving-wowy-extended-back-to-1950/ www.footballperspective.com/rob-gronkowski-tom-brady-and-wowy-stats/ What about some of the other receivers Manning had? The Broncos ones. Not a single receiver on that Broncos team even had a pro bowl prior to Manning’s arrival with the exception of old Wes Welker who didn’t even make a pro bowl there due to him not being targeted much at all. But we're not even done yet. Let's look at air yards, that is passing yards - RAC yards. This is probably the best way to separate a QB from their receivers. The stats are below, if updated, the differential is still about the same, but Brady has about 50.5% of his yards as air yards, to Mannings 57.5%. As you can see, both QBs have lower air yards percentages now, pretty much expected as they aged. fancredsports.com/articles/nfl-quarterbacks-air-yards-vs-yards-after-catch Manning even with a noodle arm led the league in marginal air yards in 2014! www.footballperspective.com/guest-post-marginal-yac-2014-in-review/#more-23630 Even in 2015, with a complete noodle arm and washed, he still out produced Brady in marginal air yards: www.footballperspective.com/guest-post-marginal-yac-2015-in-review/#more-27914 This goes to show that Manning is more of a downfield thrower and relies less on his teammates to run after the catch on checkdowns. What about 3rd downs?? Since 2001, statistically Peyton Manning ranks #2 in 3rd down conversions behind Ben Roethlisberger. Tom Brady ranks #9. steelersdepot.com/2018/05/roethlisbergers-3rd-down-passing-conversion-rate-tops-in-nfl-since-2001/?Feed%3A+SteelersDepotBlog+%28Steelers+Depot%29 Overall, I conclude that Manning performs better in the postseason and regular season, all while having fairly if not equal supporting casts offensively. And he does all this while throwing longer passes on average, not throwing as many checkdowns. Manning also did this all with a worse rushing game which I will link below. This is why Peyton Manning is the Greatest Quarterback Of All Time. Thats all they were missing and they never did anything to fix it then their line started to fall apart as players got older and new guys never panned out aside from Pouncey. Life long fan and I can go thru a hundred instances where their CBs got torched when the game was on the line.

Is Ben an all time great QB? It's a really good question. Cause he's had a good team around him most of the time, but they he was rarely used early in his career. That decreased his numbers (even through they are still great). Then theres how tough he is just standing in the pocket like that, and how he rarely starts a game without finishing it. And don't forget that pumpfake, second to none and has gotten plenty of big yard plays and TDs. So it seems like a yes, but when you say names like Manning, Brees, Brady, Montana, Marino, he doesn't give you that same vibe. What do others think?

I keep watching games from this year and before, and noticed something: the game was faster. While some dolt is going to chime in about how the "game has evolved" and the players are all bigger, faster, and stronger today... they are just wrong. Objectively and irrefutably wrong. The players played with much more velocity and aggression in the 90's and 00's, were every bit as big and athletic as they are today, QB's weren't just a bunch of backyard improv scramblers like they are today, and defenses were allowed to actually play defense. Unlike today, which artificially inflates QB numbers (even for those in their 40's...).

Tbh, Dungy's Colts should have never had a ring. They were always carried by Peyton Manning and his excellence in the regular season and were just flat out lucky every single year that the rest of the AFC South was meh at best. And they barely had any defense at all. And it showed how outmatched they always were when the playoffs came around and they were always one and done with 2006 being the exception. If Peyton had been drafted by another team, the Colts would have never had a ring

They had hall of famers all around the offenses. And the notion the Colts didn’t have any defense is simply false. The main reason they won the title in 06 was because of the defense and if you look at most of their losses in the 2000s in the playoffs the colts defense played well in most of those matchups.
